Paleo Pals - Health, Weight Loss & Support

I forgot to mention this earlier - my urogynecologist (who is younger, fitter & smarter than I am) switched to paleo several years ago. She says she hasn't had a cold or case of hives (she had been experiencing both) since going paleo. She is a perfectionist, very cutting-edge in her medical practice & a tireless researcher. Her endorsement was good enough for me!
-
Hanging my head in shame, I used Miracle whip in a salad yesterday for dinner and ate some. I just did a google search and read it has High Fructose corn syrup in it, tears I tell you, I have tears for being so stupid, because I just ate a bit of that salad again! UGH! This is frustrating again. I don't like the taste of paleo mayo. This living and learning the hard way is not working very well for my thighs! haha
Basement - we think we have figured out the problem. Apparently we should have been adjusting the air exchange or turning it off during the high humidity days. Fingers crossed that this is all it is and an easy fix. It's been raining most of the day and I have found no water on the walls or floor of the basement. YAY!!!!!
Got Stella 5 new toys today, she sniffed them and that was that, she went to the corner and layed down.
Egads - can you just come stay with me for a bit till I get the hang of this new lifestyle????
Jade - when is your surgery, you may have mentioned this already but what is your surgery for?
JKL how are you feeling my dear?
Junie - how did the MRI go? Are you finding ways to stay cool?
kath - how are you holding up lovely?
ksusan - guess I should get those melatonin out of the recycle bin. hahahaha Kids are definitely part of the cranky mommy personality!
-
Dmx with prepec dti if approved. I wish I knew when my surgery is going to be. They say wait to get a surgery date after seeing PS that I'm supposed to see him within two to three weeks but nobody has even contacted me with a PS appt and it's already been a week,they rarely do last minute appts so I don't know what is going on.
-
TwoH - Congrats on the weight loss and getting closer to your goal!!! YAY YOU!! The last 10 lbs seem be applied to me with superglue. I'm hoping my upcoming break from tamoxifen will make the diff. Neanderthal DNA....so cool, I'm hoping to find the same, but will probably be told...you have all the genetic markers of the village idiot
)))) How is your son doing lately? Oh, and btw, you have your cave sisters even if there's no DNA lol!
Vamp - I'm sorry but the first line of your post made me LOL...hang your head in shame??? Over miracle whip??? Darlin' no beating yourself up while you're in the learning process! Every time you pick up processed food quickly scope out the the ingredients list, if you see canola, soy, sugar, wheat and words that Einstein couldn't pronounce, put it down. Your eyes should also go to the carb and sugar numbers on the chart...big numbers? put it down. Simple eh? You'll find in time that you can determine choices in seconds, honest! When you say you don't like paleo mayo do you mean the store bought? Yeah that tastes like satan's backside...if you mean the homemade, add way more lemon to make it closer to miracle whip (like double), zippier, or garlic...scare the neighbours with your breath! Stellllllaaaaaa! Awwww, I hope she's happier soon. Any dog that wears pinstripes & fedora needs to be happy! Omg girlfriend, have me stay with you?????lol, you might want to talk to my cavedude before taking that chance!! He might have a different slant
))Anytime you need guidance or help go right ahead and call or text...always there for ya! Hugs!
JKL (JFK) - My niece went vegan too, had about the same results as your granddaughter, not good. She's recently into the gym and slowly incorporating meat back into her life...now, if I could only drag the bread off her table lol! I think MAP's MO is paleo too...nothing like your doc being paleo to affirm our decisions! I agree, we all fit together like LEGO here!
Jade - yes! Up that protein presurgery, it helps with the healing process! I'm going to post on low cost paleo for you soon, this CAN be done on the cheap! Btw, I was skimming through the threads and saw that we all owe you a BELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Sorry it wasn't a good day, but we can always celebrate in the cave on foodie Friday! Three cheers for you!! As for your surgery, start calling and diplomatically but FIRMLY ask for answers...I was passed over a long time too...wish I knew then what I do now. Would never wait that long again. Squeaky wheel!
Junie - thinking of you...hope the mayo is sorting things out for you!!
KathBaby - what up hun?
-
Foodie Friday tomorrow cave kids, have your forks, knives and clubs ready. Don’t wear your best tiger skins..grease stains are hard to remove!

Egads007
I called ten minutes ago with a to paraphrase "did my paperwork get lost? I was told I would see the plastic surgeon within two to three weeks of my BS appt and it's been over a week with no appt date" this is an actual issue for me it seems whenever my name gets near electronics.
HA I got the return call as I was typing this I go next week. They didn't say it but it is feeling like my paperwork got misplaced.
Thank you for the belated birthday wishes. I so wish it had been better it wasn't one big thing just a lot of little things in too short a span of time.
Blessed be
-
Jade - I feel ya...if something is falling out of the sky it generally hits me right onthe head...I thought my BS forgot I had cancer lol! So glad you got word back...keep on em' like a good cave chick would...we're nothin' to sneeze at! Keep us posted
-
I posted this in the surgery post:
So apparently there is a disconnect between me and a couple of the health professionals, and it's possible I won't be getting implants after all. I was talking pre pec dti and they thought I was talking about under the muscle dti which is apparently a thing here ? i didn't even know that was a thing.
I will find out next week as I got a callback and an appt with the ps then.
So it looks like I may be living flat anyways.should have known.they were way too easy and agreeable when I said that was the only option I was willing to do right now other then flat.
Speaking of food I gotta go make some bok choy and mushrooms for supper.
-
Jade so glad you followed up with the office, I swear those people are honestly just too busy on Facebook to do their jobs! My doctors office has the blood tests and ultrasounds in the same building, both times I talked to them they hung up as they were talking, no goodbye, F-off, see you later, nothing. Unprofessional in my opinion, this generation needs a good smack with manners!
I should have known better with the mayo, just too lazy to make paleo. I make my own, haven't tried store bought yet, tempted for the convenience, but not thinking that's a good idea now. Satan's backside does not sound very appetizing. I will try adding more lemon and garlic next time I make it. Some days I just don't feel like prepping and cooking, want something easy.
-
Whoaaaaa! Vamp dropped an 'almost F-bomb'!! I've been waiting for that on this thread for a long time, I was like:
LOLOLOL...*high 5s Vamp* all good by me, sometimes no other word will do!!! Don’t you dare edit it out!!!!
)))))))
PS...store bought mayo is so bitter. Make a big batch (lots of lemon, teaspoon of honey is good too) and use it to your hearts content..good as long as the expiry date on your eggs.
-
Thank you cave chicks for your concerns. I'm doing well. Your feedback did wonders for healing my heart and for that I will be eternally grateful. In the process of updating my estate plan and a few loose ends need to be tightened up but overall I’m seeing the light at the end of this tunnel. Bless you all.
Egads, I laughed out loud at your last post. Ok, if you don't write a book, you need to think of doing stand up comedy. Your sense of humor and encouragement keeps me coming back and I'm finding my self leaning more and more toward paleo. (Ok, with an indiscretion every now and then. You know that Vegas thing.)
-
Inna I recognise that this diet goes aganst the grain. LOL The reason I went Paleo is after I recurred, I reread Gary Taubes book and the part about cancer. Primitive peoples dont get cancer until they eat a modern, western diet. I was semi vegetarian most of my life and that didnt work so i decided to embrace Paleo and try it. Plus I researched and researched diet and the only things I found to prevent recurrence is lower fasting glucose, not gaining weight and eating one fewer serving of carb per day. Honestly this is the only way for me to prevent weight gain because high carb seems to keep me ravenous. And I exercise a lot so that also makes me hungry. And then also, my primary care doc said its a good diet abd I trust him.
Vamp does Stella need a Thundershirt? OMG some days I relate to her.
Egads -DS is doing well on new medication and has not changed his diet beyond the no corn, no dairy so far. He is not motivated when he feels well, for sure. Stubborn as a mule.
-
TwoHobbies - I wondered about the shirt, but was worried it would make her too hot, definitely a cheaper way to go and no pills to get her to "eat". I will have to look into it more. Thanks for the reminder on it.
Egads - sh!t that doesn't count as swearing, it's a good thing I type my posts! As my husband always says to the boys, "mommy has a sailors mouth" and I follow it up with, "don't repeat what mommy says." hahahaha They are 10 now and not once have they swore - touch wood! Thankfully my therapist will drop an F-bomb once in awhile making me I feel normal for having such a potty mouth. I usually apologize to people, surprised I didn't when we talked!
Busy weekend for me - two jobs today, then tomatoes need to get done. I did work out last night and very happy to say that I did finish that video again. Whoop Whoop! Soon I will be able to add back a step layer and maybe some heavier weights!
-
Morning, cave people! Just wanted to say that I am not against low carb diets. I’ve been on Atkins and Ducane diets for years with great results, until both stopped working. I try to avoid carbs and processed foods as a general rule, but I think something broke in my body a few years ago, and coincidentally, that’s when I got cancer. I think I will go to a nutritionist once I am done with chemo and rads and ask for food plan. I’ll never be a vegan or a vegetarian, that’s for sure. Maybe pescatarian, because I love fish. I won’t give up my Greek yogurt either, but will definitely stop making my famous home-made granola loaded with all the happiness in the world. People have been known to eat it with a spoon as a desert, that’s how good it is. I’ve been exercising steadily for years as well, so I have no idea how I gained extra 18lb in the last 4 years. Well, 8 of them are already gone anyway. Must get through 2 more DD Taxols first...
-
OK, Inna, now I HAVE to ask for your granola recipe! Please, please, please?
-
TGIF Cave Chickaroonies!!
KathBaby - I'm so happy to read you got a wee bit of comfort from our words.....the gals in here just ooze support....gotta love em! I guess I could write a book about standup lol! Glad you got a laugh, laughing is so very paleo! Healing. Don't forget we're here for you whenever you need to vent or laugh! Oh and btw, Kath is leaning towards Paleo ladies!! Lets give her a shove on into the cave LOL!!
TwoH - My boy is stubborn too lol, and always asks, before he puts food in his mouth, "Is this Paleo?" with a tone that might as well make his words "Is this loaded with arsenic?" Weird because 95% of the time he likes what I put on his plate. I swear he does it just to get under my skin lol! Glad to see he's doing well on the meds, and that stubborn streak will bode him well in life. Has for me
)))
Vamp - Do you know how much of an effort I made on the phone with you not to swear??? Baby, why didn't you say that you spoke 'salty'!?!?!...some days my cave dude claims I could make a sailor blush LOL!! I think I even apologized to you for saying the SH word LOL, next time the expletives will be flying like theres no tomorrow!!!
))))))) Look at you go....all exercise-y!!! I knew you would rock it....keep us posted on the progress....we're all proud of you!!
Inna (godda davida) - From what you're describing it sounds like you'd be best matched to the Mediterranean diet, a close cousin to paleo, and highly regarded by the paleo community. Check out this link for a description: https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/mediterranean-diet/art-20047801 There are some weeks that my diet very much leans that way, except for the wheat and grain end of it.
JKL - Back away from the granola!!!....don't give into the evils of grain!!!
))))))) We'll have to do a granola exorcism on ya!!!! Joking of course, a lot of paleo peeps are 80/20 because of lovely sounding recipes like Inna's granola. I could never, I'd blow up like the Hindenburg and start carb craving like a maniac LOL!!
Jade - Doing my homework but it'll take a few days before I get back to you on it. Making plans to take over the world, as we are, takes strategy
))))))
Question of the day: What the heck is a Thundershirt? Is that like what the Thundercats wore in the 1980's cartoon? Does it give dogs special powers? If so, do they make them for humans? I need to fly cheaper
))))
PS: for some of you younger gals that might not know why I call Inna, the name Inna (godda davida), here is why...
This is the short version, the original is long enough to cook a chicken!
So now I'll go get the foodie Friday post together while feeling all Hippie/Woodstock n' stuff....back at ya! Hugs to all!
Edited to add: Gee wilikers, I've been spelling it wrong all this time
))) meh, sue me.
-
Doing the food dance here (to the above vid lol) becaaaause it's ….
FOODIE FRIDAY!!
You know the drill, post your pride n' joy recipes (pics are always nice but not a must), accomplishments, flops, or any ol' culinary thing you want!
Here's a round up of dinners on Egad's table this past week:
Monday aka 'Fish Night'. No idea why we say it like it's punishment, we love fish
)
Crispy skin salmon with fried green onion cauli-rice (my caveman gives me the skin off his fish...fine by me!)
Tuesday - Butter Chicken Pizza, cause' we love Indian food!
Wednesday - Orange garlic grilled chicken (there were oven baked sweet potato fries too...no idea why I didn't put it on the plate)
Thursday - Butter chicken over ginger & cilantro fried cauli-rice. Had paleo naan but didn't make the pic...it must have been partying with the missing sweet potatoes
))))
(Made earlier in the week and used for pizza...on it's own it tastes so much better after a few days...I wasn't kidding when I said I'm going to sneeze feathers soon...sheesh, time for some beef or pork!)
Today - I'll be making reservations.
))))))))
Sooooo…..show us your stuff cavies!!
-
All right, all right, no granola! Here’s my chicken with green snot recipe instead. Sorry, can’t type it, too long. I usually omit Erythritol, because I have no idea what that is.
-
Egads, thanks for the song! Now I know why you call me godda davida! Going to look for my bell bottoms now
-
And yes, I also think Mediterranean diet is the one for me
-
OMG I ruined everyone's granola day LOL!!! NOOOOOOOoooooooo, post it Inna!!! Ain't nobody tellin' nobody what to post or what to eat, not in our community. We're all wearing our big cavegirl tiger skin panties and do as we see fit, so post it (please because JKL is going to lay a beating on me if you don't
))))))))
Thanks for the snot n' chicken recipe! I've been looking forward to it and will be on the menu next week! Can't wait!
Bet you're rocking those bell bottoms!
edited to add: lol, I was going to drop the Erythritol too....it's an artificial sweetener, not the worst one but not the best. You could sub honey in it's place (lil bit) for a paleo option….a lot of Asian needs that touch of sweet, but not mandatory.
-
Oh, and the song Inna Godda Davida was written after the band member had drunk a gallon of wine...he actually was trying to call it 'In the Garden of Eden' but slurred so drunkenly that the words came out wrong...band liked it and the name stuck.
Let's hope it was red wine...paleo n'all
))))
Trivia ended
-
Egads, I have to admit, your sense of humor keeps me coming to this board more often than to any other! You rock, girl! And that dish doesn’t need honey, I swear. It’s perfect without it.
-
Give me some credit; I was going to make the granola for my uber-picky, super-active granddaughters (ages 10 & 4). I loved that Inna said it was "loaded with all the happiness in the world." As for me, I'll be trying the chicken & green snot! (I LOVE anything Szechuan.) As an aside, grain doesn't appear to bother me but I really don't have any desire for it these days.
Vamp & Egads, don't worry about salty language here! My DH actually IS a sailor (long retired) & I can outdo him when necessary! (Like the time my BS's office called the day before I was to have those damned cancer cells taken out of my breast & informed me they would be cancelling my surgery because I hadn't provided all the films they needed - even though I had hand-carried all the images to their office days earlier & they were sitting on the receptionist's desk because she had neglected to take them down to imaging! Ooh, my language that day probably blistered paint! Come to think about it, they remodeled that office shortly after my surgery. Do you think I really did destroy their paint job?)
Kath, I'm happy you're doing better. Just keep coming here, we're your tribe now. BTW, I'm in NoVa so we're practically neighbors!
Vamp, I second the thundershirt suggestion because I've seen it work. My DD's dog (a rescue after being abandoned in Houston during a recent hurricane, poor baby) is understandably high strung & anxious. The thundershirt fits snuggly enough to feel like a big, cozy hug & has really seemed to calm him. It doesn't work for every dog but it shouldn't be too hot since my DD uses it in Austin, TX. Worth a try.
TwoH & Egads, you have stubborn sons? I can SO relate! But mine is getting his comeuppance in the form of an even more stubborn daughter (or, as Barbara Bush termed it "he's getting back some of his own")!
And Egads, that orange garlic grilled chicken looks amazing! That is definitely something I want to try. (And I understand your fear of a beating - we cavegirls carry big clubs!)
Ahh, Inna Gadda Davida. I had many memorable times with Iron Butterfly playing in the background (sheesh, I'm old) but those are stories for another time ...

Yum, yum!
Today's keto lunch:
Preheat oven to 350.
Egg cups: Line a short muffin cup with low-sugar deli ham. Scramble eggs, add 1/2 egg per muffin cup. top with cheese and shredded basil leaves. Add a sprinkle of salt, pepper, paprika. Cook until firm.
90-second keto bread: Whisk one egg. Add 1 T olive oil, 1 t baking powder, 3 T almond flour, small pinch pink salt. I added basil. Whisk to incorporate until there are no lumps. Transfer to a ramekin. Tap on the counter a few times to reduce air pockets. Microwave 90 seconds. Split and butter.
Salad: Broccoli, jicama with Tajin, tomatoes, artichoke hearts, splash of olive oil and vinegar.
Salsa: Tomatoes, cilantro, garlic, lime, scallion, food processed and proportions corrected.
The tomatoes, cilantro, broccoli, and basil are organic from our garden.
-
Inna (godda davida) - Thank you, you're too kind! Don't let me fool you, it's you and each & every one one of us cave chicks that make this thread so awesome to visit! Hugs!
Ksuze - Yum indeed! Beautiful pic and delish lunch! I had never thought to add herbs to mug bread! I suppose garlic and onion could be in order.....great possibilities! I would sell my soul for some jicama.....they don't sell it here
((((
JKL - Ok, we'll trust you on the granola thing.....as long as you provide 2 copies of a sworn affidavit from your granddaughter
)))))) Joking of course, I never doubted you for a minute Ms. Lifer, don't see you straying! OLD?!?!?!? NEVER!!!!!! Chicks born even close to the Summer of Love (like you & me) are timeless....just like the music. When musicians could actually play instruments and carry a tune. When bands started out in the garage and not the hairdresser's chair or recording studio executive offices via a stylist. When lyrics didn't spout gratuitous violence, crime and sexist BS.....love and peace will never die, it's timeless and beautiful, just like the era's women!
Jim was def singing to the women of the day with this:
-
Egads007
I really like the salmon plate you got up there. Looks very yummy. Thanks.
-
Egads this is the Thundershirt.
-
You flatter me, Egads. I wasn't "born close to the Summer of Love," I graduated from high school that year! (Once, in law school, a classmate asked me, with wonder in her voice, "were you actually ALIVE during the Vietnam War?")
I am so enjoying your music selections; it's the sound track of my youth! Years ago I visited Jim Morrison's grave in Paris (much to my ex's embarrassment). He (Morrison, NOT my ex) still has a huge number of fans that leave flowers & other things of a more intimate nature there.
I just realized how often I've been posting lately. Can you tell that I am extremely bored since I've been forbidden to set foot in the gym? Note to self: get a life!

Hello everyone,
The MRI went well on Wednesday. On Thursday I went to the Neurology Dept. (without an appt.) and asked if I could get an appt to speak to the neurologist. They asked me to wait in the lobby and approx. 30 min. later I was called in to see the neurologist. I waited another 20 min. and the neuro came and showed me my MRI results. My tumor can be seen in the center of my T11, plus I have spondylosis in my Lumbar spine (it's a mess, but no cancer in the lumbar spine).
The neuro and I had an in depth conversation about cryo-ablation of the bone & vertebroplasty, then he made several phone calls right there in front of me. The one doctor here who does this procedure is out of the clinic until the 23rd, but his nurse called him and he agreed to do it. So I'll be here another week. I have 3 appts. on Monday, 1 on Tuesday, none on Wednesday (so far), procedure on Thursday, plus I'll probably spend the night in the hospital since this procedure is done under general anesthesia.
Discharged on Friday, PICC line removed, then I'll return to the hotel and rest for the rest of the day & Saturday. Then on Sunday I will fly home to Oregon.
I have been incredibly fortunate to get all of this accomplished in 2 weeks. The Amer. Cancer Soc. was able to help me with 8 days of my hotel stay, but today they let me know they are unable to help with the last 5 days. So I will have to pay for those days. Even so, I am thankful to have this opportunity.
Yesterday I made several phone calls back home to see if there is any doctor who performs cryoablation of a bone w/ vertebroplasty, but I couldn't find one. There are doctors that do Interventional Radiology back home, but none that are Neuro-Interventional Radiologists like the doctor here at Mayo. So it is worth staying here to have it done here.
It rained a bunch yesterday and was much cooler & pleasant here today.
While Rochester is a very nice and clean city, the cost of living here is very high. One nurse told me that the amount of money here in Rochester is mind boggling and that is why it costs so much to live here.
Okay, that's all for now and I will bid you all goodnight.
JunieB
