Confused Mom
- My daughter, 42, just told me she was diagnosed. She has a very prominent mass and several small, pea sized on left breast.
- She said they could tell just from xray that it is definitly cancer. I do not understand how this is possible; or is it?

To draw a definitive conclusion about whether or not a lump is cancer, a biopsy is necessary. However, experienced radiologists, looking at a mammogram and/or ultrasound image can often tell that a lump is cancerous. My radiologist told me that my lump's images were consistent with cancer. He was right.

- Thank you. I just thought it was jumpung the gun. She doesn't have another appt. Until 8/27.I think that is odd also.

I was told the same thing. Radiologists have seen so many cases it's more than likely than not they can spot cancer. In fact mine walked in after I was called back to be retested and told me it was breast cancer. I hadn't even had a biopsy yet.
I also had radiation and one of the techs told me I was blessed mine was early stage and I would be fine. She had been a tech for 20+years. Wile I know it's just her opinion it was still encouraging.
I'm 7 years out this month. So far, so good
If it is indeed breast cancer there's a lot your daughter doesn't know yet. One step at a time. We all understand how frightened you and she are. Completely understandable but also remember we've all been through the process in various stages and we are still here.
So keep the faith and keep us posted.

Hi there DeeDee. It is jumping the gun a bit, but if she asks for a copy of the report we can help you all decipher it. If she just had a mammogram, the next step could be an ultrasound, an MRI, or a biopsy. I know the process seems like it takes forever, so hang in there and do take it one step at a time. Sending you best wishes for benign results.

I know when I was DX I thought the next step would be instantaneous. It wasn’t long but not right away either. I kept thinking the tumor was getting larger while I was waiting. It didn’t of course.

I had my annual on Monday, got a call Tuesday morning that I needed to get more images right away. So I got another 3D mammogram, then bilateral ultrasound and after review I had consultation with radiologist. She told me that I have BC, that it is going to be a rough year, but they will get me through it. She stayed late and biopsied 3 sites on my right breast (2 on breast and 1 for lymphnode in armpit). When I asked why she was doing a biopsy on one that she believes is benign, she said your surgeon is going to want a definitive answer since there it is a little suspect. She said that only pathology can confirm a diagnosis, but with all she said to me, I feel certain I am not getting good news.

fsaucedo - Sorry you're here and worried. We just wanted to welcome you to Breastcancer.org, and let you know that we're so glad you've found our Community. As the doctor said, only pathology can confirm a diagnosis, so we really hope you get benign results from biopsy. Please come back to let us know how it goes. We hope you find the support and advice you need here while you wait!
Best wishes,

An experienced radiologist can tell just by the shape, density or patterns. Mine told me "This looks like trouble. You are going to need a biopsy" He was an older gentleman who went over my images with me and explained to me what he was seeing. It was more than a month before I had my surgery. I had to go for many tests such as an Ultrasound guided biopsy, an MRI and a PET, Probably a CT scan was in there too. I also visited my internist, an oncologist, a radiologist, and two surgeons before my surgery. I was glad I did because I felt I had a really good plan of attack and felt comfortable with my team when I went into surgery. I felt like they studied my situation well and addressed all of my concerns.
I also learned appointment will be made, cancelled, and rescheduled. It drove me a little crazy but I got through it.
