Genetic test

good morning everyone.

I’m newly diagnosed (less than a week). IDC, grade 2. Ugh. The oncologist drew blood for genetic testing. He said it tests for 41 or 42 genes I think? Is anyone familiar with what this test would help show? BRCA maybe? Sorry for the elementary question. I’m so new to all of this and barely getting by 😞

It does look at BRCA mutation. I just got my negative results today. I was really nervous. I had bone cancer as a teen and they are linking it to BRCA plus my dad, grandmother and grandfather had cancer that does show up with that mutation. Lucky I did not have it. I hope you get good results. Sorry you find yourself here. I am a newbie too diagnosed July 31. Hugs

    Sadlynew,

Welcome but sorry you have had to join us here. I did not have testing done until after. I went from dx to surgery in little over a week. I recently had the testing done on the advice of my Onco, this one tested 67 genes..yikes...I was a bit worried about what other things may be lurking in my future if any come pack positive. Mine came back neg. Hopefully all yours will also. Hugs..

It does test for the BRCA gene mutations, which are the most common ones. But there are other less common, but equally concerning gene mutations. My 30-gene test was negative for the BRCAs, but positive for the more rare PALB2 and Chek2 mutations, both of which cause breast and colon cancers. My genetics counselor put my breast cancer risk at 45+%. Yikes! And they don't know enough about PALB2 & Chek2 to assign a percentage risk, but they know that those gene mutations raise risk by 2-3 times normal. Double yikes!!

As a result of my testing, I was strongly urged to have a BMX after chemo. I also have colonoscopy every 3-5 years (so much fun.) My children opted to be tested, as well, since they had a 50% chance of having one, two, or no mutations. DS32 is negative for both, but DD25 is positive for both. Foo. The only bright spot is that she will have opportunities for frequent imaging, hormone suppression, and eventually surgery to try to prevent her getting BC. Still, it's a bitter pill for her.

    Hi Sadly,

I did the Invitae panel that tested for 42 genes. I was super relieved when it did not come back positive for either of the BRCA genes (we have a strong family history in every generation).

It did, however, come back positive for RAD51D. I didn't know anything about it until I got the results last December. It's related primarily to ovarian, but more studies are showing a relation to breast cancer, and triple negative specifically. My grandma had triple negative that metastasized when she was 50, and took her life.

It was a thorough test, and I like how they keep you up to date on new studies for your gene.
