You can normally feel some little bumps under the skin, above or below the incision line. That's where they put the needle. Tell them it's still sore since it's recently done.

I always had them use the freezing spray to numb the area before they placed the needle.

Ask for a prescription for EMLA lidocaine cream. You may not be able to use it this time because your skin is so newly incised. For future infusions put a blob of the EMLA on the port site - about a tablespoon - and cover it with plastic wrap, Glad Press 'N Seal works best. Don't spread the cream, leave it in the blob right on top of the port, and do this about an hour prior to the infusion - I did it right before I left my house. The lidocaine numbs the skin, and I always had them spray also with the freezing spray - I had an extremely small port and didn't want the onc nurses to struggle and be nervous about causing any discomfort. Keep an eye on your port incision, chemo inhibits healing to some degree and starting so soon after port install, while commonly done, can cause some issues. Good luck!

Everything that SpecialK said. Also, put the cream maybe 2 hours before the infusion. Have some paracetamol beforehand. Hope you have an uneventful time

I had my port placed one day before I got my first chemo. They told me they are ready for use immediately following insertion. I was still hopped up on my pain meds though, so I didn't really have much discomfort when they accessed my port for the first time. Good luck tomorrow!

Thank you very much for the input!!! I will call them and ask if they have numbing spray .

And numbing cream they use on pediatric patients to draw blood , my daughter said it doesn’t help if they do it 20 min before drawing the blood! Maybe 2 hours is the way!!!

Personally I don’t see any urge to start chemo before wound healing. I still have some pain ..thsnk you got the advice.
