edited September 2018 in Not Diagnosed But Worried

It all started in September with two small lumps near the edge on my areola that popped up over night. I was still breastfeeding so assumed plugged ducts, they didn't go away after several weeks so I went to the doc just in case. Doc wasn't worried and thought it just bf related. The lumps remained the same for months, stopped breastfeeding a few weeks after seeing doc.

February comes and I start experiencing pain in that same breast,my left, no big deal. The lumps are finally gone, yay. As time progresses I start to have edema of my areola that kind of comes and goes same as the pain, but I also have two hard areas. One at the top of my breast, one the inner outer part. Go to doc again,in May, says symptoms are bizarre but doesn't suspect malignancy and sends me for a US. US is normal and doc attributes it to hormones.

Now I feel like things are just getting worse. My breast has gotten bigger, which I thought maybe before the US but now I'm sure, feeling a bit lopsided! The edema is constant, there is a small dry/scaby area on the nipple, and more of the breast is hard. The skin or just under the skin on the lower left portion now feels lumpy. A day or two ago I notice the edema had let up a little but the areola is now hard. Needless to say this is very uncomfortable, I feel like my breast is engorged.

I don't know what to do, I'm scared. Could this still be hormones?

    Hi dc89,

Our breasts are affected by hormones, and many other variables. If you experience changes, we always recommend that you consult with a health professional to ease your concerns, and try to understand what is going on.

Update: I went back to the drs last Tuesday. She examined me and said this is clearly mastitis and started antibiotics. There has been no improvement after 6 days so i called back this morning. They finally got back to me this afternoon and are refering me to the breast clinic. The nurse told me that my provider wants me to have the best care possible but not anymore of an explanations than that. I am very worried that this is actually cancer that has been missed! I'm very anxious and find it hard to focus on anything bc of it.

it sure sounds like mastitis. I wouldn’t read anything into the nurse’s comment except that your doc is taking no chances and prefers to get it checked out thoroughly. Good luck and keep us posted!🍀

I hope so. My husband keeps trying to reasure me and talk me down. I know I'm an anxious person so I feel like I can entirely trust my own feelings around this. Thanks for responding!

I hope all is ok. Please, keep us updated.

I’m getting more tests tomorrow as something was found on my diagnostic mammogram which was done due to nipple changes. It’s nice to not feel alone.

I’m glad you are getting more thoroughly checked.

if it is indeed mastitis it should go away with antibiotics after about 72 hours. If it’s still not gone I would insist on a biopsy to rule out inflammatory breast cancer that often presents identical to mastitis. I’m sure it’s something B9 but best to be 100 sure.

IBC has definately been on my mind. I'm going to the breast clinic on the 30th. My provider even called to see if they could move it up but there really wasnt much they could do. It feels like an eternity, I just want to know what I'm dealing with and get some relief from the discomfort.

Well here it goes...i guess its technically not official until the biopsies comes back but the radiologist was confident I have breast cancer. They found several masses and possibly lymph node involvement. They biopsied one node and one of the masses. They think there is a possibility of some skin involvement as well bc i definately have some lumpy orange peelish skin. They may have to biopsy that as well. I meet with the breast surgeon next Wednesday, in the mean time waiting for results.

dc89- I just want to say I’m so sorry for the way things are looking right now. Praying that if results are cancer that it was still caught early. ((Hugs))

I got the call last night, both biopsies came back positive for cancer. The radiologist said she believes this to be inflamatory breast cancer. So they trying the line up an mri and maybe a ct for wednesday as well as seeing the breast surgeon. Sounds like they typically do chemo first then surgery.
