biopsy benign, dr still wants to do more

I had a CT scan a few weeks ago for a kidney stone.  the CT showed a nodule on my breast that started this whole party.  Mammogram.  more mammogram.  hand held ultrasound.  callback for ABUS ultrasound.  THe concern at this point is NOT the nodule but another spot they found.  An 'architectural distortion with spiculations.'

Then I got a call for a biopsy.  Stereotactic biopsy.  The dr said 'I am not going to lie to you.  what I see is very concerning.  But we've found it early and we will deal with it.'   Once biopsy results came back, benign, he called and said 'I just don't feel good about leaving this in your breast even though the biopsy says benign.  I told you I was concerned about it, and I still am.'

So I don't know how or why.  why is it negative and he still wants to do a lumpectomy and send it to pathology?  I thought we would be done with the biopsy.

What they see is not a tumor or nodule.  did he maybe biopsy an area not showing cancer?  I just have a lot of questions and am confused.  I meet with him on Monday to discuss a lumpectomy.

Sometimes it happens that biopsy results are discordant with the imaging, in which case removal is usually recommended. What were the benign results? Normal breast tissue or something else?

Normal breast tissue I assume.  I don't really know, I guess.   So is there still a chance this will come back as cancer?

You should get and keep copies of all your imaging and reports, for future reference. The doctor strongly believes there is more going on than the biopsy is showing, so it is good that the recommendation is to just get it out. Could turn out to be a pleasant surprise to the doc if it is okay. There are several things that can look cancerous on mammogram or ultrasound but turn out not to be, but for now further investigation is warranted.

First off as an xray tech im wondering why they included your chest on a scan for kidney stones. I do not have alot if experience in CT though. Seems like breasts would have only been included in a scout. But... however they found it.. thank goodness! I do have 16 years of experience in mammography. As techs we don't like seeing additional work ups die to findings from a cut scan. But since you've followed up with what sounds like the usual protocol..diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound then biopsy it sounds like you've been recommended the right course of action. Anything with spiulations is very suspicious then add to that architectural distortion and theres a specific reason they want this area out. Sounds to me like the dr is thinking the area that was biopsied isnt the right one..disconcordant. Or some physicians are of the mind set that even if a biopsy comes back negative and it has the characteristics I mentioned it just needs to come out. The dr seems like he doesn't want to take a chance. In this case if it were me I'd follow his or her advice. Anything spiculated with architectural distortion is very concerning. If you have very dense breasts there could be a mass hiding in that tissue. Good luck with this! Om curious to find out what they find. Hopefully absolutely nothing!

I've had CT's before for kidnsey stones and I can't remembwr them going that high. However if it caused them to find something bad then it's a good thing it happened the way it did! I'm going with his recommendations. My concern is that something is hiding in dense tissue. And better now than later if it is something malignant. Thank you for your information.

On a flip note my husband insists that because the biopsy was benign that this test will also show nothing. I’m not as convinced.

Cjzach, my mother had a routine chest xray when she was 48 and i captured her thyroid cancer. Same thing happened last year when she had a chest xray, except that time they caught a glimpse of her liver. Stage 4 kidney cancer in her liver! All i can figure us Mother was very short, with a short torso so it was easier to see those areas on xray.

that happened to me. Dr always said vey concern but biospy is negative. Imaging doesn't match core needle so I have to do surgery. I know it is frustrating but when I think back it is not a bad thing to remove it anyways
