Lymph Node Question

Hi all,

I had a lumpectomy last week and she took one node. She said none actually appeared suspcious and she took the senitnel node to test. It came back positive.

I asked if she needed to test more and she said it was not protocol to go take more when you suspect fewer than 3 will be affected because it doesn't change outcomes and increases lymphedema risk and that I would either have chemo or the whole area radiated which makes sense but i'm just a little nervous.. like is there something I'm missing?

i mean i get that chemo would be the answer if it was in more anyway.

maybe if they are leaning away from chemo they'll want to test more?

I really like and trust this doc but I just want to make sure I'm understanding it all correctly

Thoughts?

Thanks

hi! I’m 3 weeks out from a double mastectomy and during the procedure, the first set of sentinel nodes from each breast was tested. I had one of six come up with cancer. My surgeon stopped at that as well with a very similar explanation. She did consult oncology during the surgery to see if they concurred with the decision to stop there or if she should continue with more node removal. They confirmed that she should stay with the sentinel lymph nodes and not proceed, saying that i would be getting radiation and probably chemo.

pccranky, from my understanding, they take as many nodes as they light up after sentinel node radioactive injection , they took 3 of mine and 1 had micro cells inside that node - so was out !

So I m reading a lot here and see how doctors can easily miss something, so hopefully it’s not the case with you or me or the whole group of girls!

But they following a protocol I guess!!!
