Hi everyone:
I was planning to take the summer and go visit the Maritime provinces but bc took precedence BUT..I am going to try to do it summer 2007 and would love to connect with those of you from the Maritimes. I live in B.C. and it's time to see the eastern coast of Canada.... I won't have as much time as I would have liked because I am taking courses but I should still have at least 3-4 weeks. I just thought it would be really nice to find out about your provinces and what I should see and do.
Look forward to hearing from you all.

PEI is definitely a stop, as is Cape Breton Island. Mind you, even though CB is part of NS, don't think it is as small as PEI. The first time I drove through it, I didn't think it was ever going to end!!!

When you say you're visiting the Maritimes are you including Newfoundland? (It's really not a Maritime province but an Atlantic province.) If you have 3-4 weeks I would recommend you spend some time here. Unfortunately the island is so big it would take at least 3 weeks to see everything.
If you come by ferry to Port aux Basques your visit should include the Northern peninsula. Gros Morne Park is beautiful with it's fjords and tablelands. L'Anse aux Meadows, the site of the Viking archaeological dig is also a must-see.
There are so many places to see I'll just mention a few - Twillingate- the iceberg capital of the world. Trinity and Brigus - two small towns with beautifully restored houses and great theatre. The Colony of Avalon in Ferryland, is a very rich archaelogical dig site with hundreds of high quality artifacts, like pottery and jewellery because Lord Baltimore lived there. Cape St. Mary's bird sanctuary - you can get really close to the birds; you're actually looking down on them. Then of course there's St. John's with its famous/infamous George Street.
DH and I visit a different part of our province every summer. If you do plan to include Nfld I recommend you drop into some small communities off the beaten path where you'll experience the real Nfld. Many communities now have walking trails it's nice to get out of the car and walk around.
Anyway I hope you enjoy planning your trip and have a good time wherever you go!
BTW Newfie2 are you originally from NFLD?

Wow: thanks for all the tips on places to see...I am so looking forward to visiting the Maritimes and the Atlantic Provinces. I would probably join up with a group who are doing a walk for the cure too... I don't want to miss out on that. Are any of you involved in the walk in the summer?

    Hello Feb:

I'm actually a born and raised Albertan, but my Mom was from Cape Breton, so I spent many summers there, and on top of that I taught at St. Francis Xavier in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

I loved Cape Breton, you can visit the fort and Louisberg, the Cabot Trail is phenomenal, Alexander Graham Bell museum in Baddeck is really informative, especially finding out how much work he did with the deaf. Cheticamp's church (cathedral) is something else to see.

I love all of Canada, but there is a warm place in my heart for the Atlantic provinces.

ST FX is one of the oldest universities in Canada, and is in the main part of Nova Scotia.

If you get the chance to go south, make sure you take the lighthouse road (off the major freeways). Yarmouth and Churchpoint are beautiful areas.

On top of Peggy's Cove, there is another place called Mahone Bay that is beautiful.

You will love it down there.

Anothe Newfie here. If you're coming this far east, you'll love it here. I lived on the mainland for 15 years and couldn't wait to get back here when I had my children. Any place you choose here will be exciting and friendly.

Just thought I'd let the 'east coasters' know that this southern ontario girl has learned to play both Auction and Tarabish. Can you guess what my favourite card game is. . . ?? lol I have a number of friends from the east coast - it's a beautiful part of the country. Both scenery and people!

    Any card players out there?

Three weeks to see the Atlantic Proviences, I think so. It may help if you have some sort of time line planned out before you arrive. See some of the highlighted places and then well, come back again to see the rest.
