BIRAD 5 - palpable lump classified as worrisome for neoplasm
I recently spotted a lump in left breast. went for mammogram and ultrasound. Results state mass with irregular margins and shadowing. no other cystic or solid mass detected. 5 cm from the nipple and worrisome for a neoplasm. An ultrasound guided biopsy is advised for a histologic diagnosis. OVERALL ASSESSMENT: BIRAD 5 - Highly suggestive of Malignancy.
That is scary to see in print. I have a appointment with breast specialist on Monday for biopsy (as it turns out, she'll review my images and discuss and THEN schedule actual biopsy). My mom had breast cancer and radical mastectomy at 54. My sister is just finishing chemo for breast cancer (59 yo). I'm 52 and frankly, worried. Trying to think positive, but it seems like almost everything says BIRAD 5 is most likely malignant.
Any advice?

I also had a score of 5. Some advice I got from my brother helped bring my stress down at this point was:
‘Don’t worry about the what if’s, worry once it’s a fact’
It could be so many things, and if it is BC then there are things you can do. You have options. It feels like your world just crashed, but it will keep going. You’ll pick yourself off and begin your battle plan. The worst part is waiting for scans and biopsies and appointments. This might be the start of a new journey or it may be just a scare. I think of it like money. I refuse to spend my emotions on what I don’t know. Doesn’t me mean I can’t educate myself, but it’s does mean I won’t cry myself to sleep convinced I need to write my will tomorrow (ok, honestly I have done this... it takes practice to think yourself out of that place). Luckily you found these forums. This is a good place to find comfort, info, and connect with others. Especially on those sleepless nights.
I hope your biopsy shows it’s benign or some small easily dealt with thing
here’s to hoping the best outcome for you

I too had a BIRADS 5 at age 52 after finding the lump myself. My heart goes out to you. Please try and enjoy your weekend. Worrying won't help and we're here to support you.

ladies thank you for the kind words. I’m ok as long as I don’t talk about it. Told my adult son today and he started to cry knowing what we’re most likely facing but followed up with we’re a team mom. What happens to you is all of us and we’ll get through it together. I’m fortunate to have a wonderful family and friends for support. Just keeping my eye on next Friday. Telling myself I’ll have biopsy and results by then. One day at a time. No stinking thinking allowed!

I would also add that in case you cannot banish thoughts/fears of the worst, and if you have really bothersome symptoms of anxiety, it is perfectly OK to ask your primary care provider to give you a short-term RX for an anti-anxiety agent like alprazolam. It is just one more tool to help in a difficult situation.

thank you Rimroc. How were you originally diagnosed?

thank you Bagsharon. I’m in the process of buying a house so I’m focusing my efforts on all of my plans to renovate and decorate. I figure I need to be busy so that occupies my mind. I’ve traded the internet searches for Pinterest searches. Much more pleasant and much less worrisome. If i could just get some sound sleep I’ll be happy.
