Rotator Cuff on BC side

Options

I am 3 1/2 yrs out and still find myself on this boards. Last week I was cutting fabric and my arm was a bit sore. It then morphed into excruciating pain. I ate Advil for 4 days and finally went to the hospital. The dr seems to think that the combo of surgeries and rads has made this side more prone to injury and I have either torn or sprained my rotator cuff. I'm having an ultrasound tomorrow. My DH is so frustrated and so am I of there always being something. Has anyone else had this?

I'm seeing my MO in a few weeks and expecting it not to go well as he wants to put me on my monthly injections as tamoxifen gives me joint pain. I'm having a hard time dealing with pain....and feeling like I was misinformed about the SE of radiation. I'm 47 and feeling like 80

A few years out from a BMX with reconstruction I found that my right shoulder was developing pain that ranged from mild and uncomfortable to intense and with limiting range of motion. My surgeon felt that it was bursitis and sent me to physical therapy. The PT confirmed the diagnosis and recommended a physical therapy program for me. I think I went weekly for a few weeks. We worked on strengthening the shoulder and reducing the movements which irritated the bursa. My pain eventually went away. I occasionally have flare-ups, usually after using that shoulder too much or straining it in some manner. But for the most part, I am pain free. You might want to explore this as a possibility.

    Good luck!

Thank you for sharing. I plan on scheduling some PT once I know what the US says butI'm wondering if radiation and the surgeries make this a common thing?

My surgeon said that it was not uncommon. With the trauma to the area, joint issues due to chemo, rads and/or AIs, and a change in posture or use of the area, new aches and pain surface. I found that I was rounding my shoulders forward, almost as though I was protecting my chest. The more rounded forward I was the more I was pinching the bursa of my shoulder joint, which led to bursitis. The pain increased as the tissue swelled in response. I needed to to pull my shoulders back and down in a more relaxed posture. This minimizes any aggravation of the bursa. Aleve worked best for pain management as long as I was working on my PT exercises.

I'm sure your US will shed some light on what is going on. Hopefully you won't need anymore surgery.

I definitely think I do the same and round my shoulders. I pay attention to it when something hurts but slip back when it doesn't. I also don't think I clued in until now that radiation could be playing a part in this because of the way my breast has tightened. I'm also really afraid of lymphadema so I still subconsciously baby that side.

    I lost my post ???

I have horrible pain on right side, arm. This has been a long journey and my counts arent staying up so I am skippin/ spreading out my treatments. Cause of that my nerves are being pinched. No meds at home are helping. I hope my palliative care nurse has some miracle. I would hate to have to quit my part time job. I really need the money. Fingers crossed someone has a plan. Have never done rads. Not sure if that would hurt more or help. I know there's is palliative rads out there, maybe that can shrink cancer a bit for now.

About ten months after my lumpectomy and radiation, I was trying to cut the end off my Christmas tree, using a rather dull saw. I worked on that thing for about half hour trying to cut through it. A couple of days later my shoulder and arm were so painful, I had trouble getting dressed. Took a lot of Ibuprofen. After about a week, it subsided. Recently I have been having PT on that shoulder since my range of motion is abysmal. The therapist said I had a frozen shoulder. The PT is improving it considerably. I think it is quite possible that the radiation and surgery had an effect on that shoulder so it is more prone to injury. I highly recommend the physical therapy!

hi everyone. I haven’t posted in a few years. I’m 3 years from last chemo. I had a general surgeon, so he tool out the whole pocket of lymph nodes. So, I got lymphedema, right after treatment. I’m right handed and a hairdresser. My shoulder is killing me. They said I have rotator cuff tendinitis. I tried therapy for a few sessions, and it made things much worse, so I stopped. The past two weeks, I have herendous pain in my arm pit and surrounding are. Not sure if it’s the lymphedema getting worse, or what. I have to rely on my family doctor, cancer doc, keeps brushing my issues off. Would like to follow and see what you all are doing to get better. Thanks. Ruth

PT made my shoulder unbearable. The only thing that has helped is rest, heat and Advil...and time. Even a cortisone shot did nothing for me. My US showed that I actually shredded my rotator cuff andI don't think this shoulder will ever be the same. I'm still in pain but it's bearable. What is frustrating is that people keep asking if it's better and I sound like I'm 80 years old. I'm so afraid of hurting it again and I'm angry that I'm doing some things because of it.

Ruth, I am a hairdresser too. Terrible pain under arm. I got gel ice packs for under arm. Some Velcro, some don't. I have been dealing with this a long time....cancer.....not the under arm thing. I think my nodes are swollen cause of cancer. It's no fun. But ice dose help....good luc

    Hi, JJOntario

i had a right-side mastectomy and was going through chemo and feeling pretty weak in the summer of 2014. One day I decided to use a handsaw to clear a small tree that had blown down over our road. I was sawing away and felt a soft pop in my shoulder, I went on and thought not much of it. That night I had excruciating burning pain in my shoulder and radiating down my back. It remained that way and if I used it for any weight at all it would be awful. I had an MRI and it was a partial tear rotator cuff. I was sent to PT after chemo and after a few months it hurt worse than before, it is now an 80% tear. I haven't done surgery yet for several reasons. The pain has gotten better over the years, but it is still there, the degree is dependent on my activity level.

I don't know for sure, but I suspect chemo and its' effects had caused my muscles to weaken and that's partly why I hurt the shoulder. My doctor said wear and tear injury.

    Good luck with your shoulder!

    Mary

Quick question on physical therapy. I also have a rotator tear and the PT wants me to have ultra sound and electrical stimulation to help with the pain. I have read that if you had cancer in the past, you should not have ultra sound. Anyone here have ultra sound at PT, or have been told not to have it as a modality in PT?

    HI, smo23915

I have not heard of that. I have had my chest area checked with ultrasound, and my legs, I don't think that's true. I have not had ultrasound at PT.

    Good luck with shoulder!
