Young and terrified

I'm terrified. So many what ifs and variables.

In the last 6 weeks I've had 3 ultrasounds, 2 mammograms, a core biopsy and an MRI. Booked in for lumpectomy on the 23rd July.

No diagnosis yet but I'm feeling terribly worried. I have a type 3enhancing 1cm mass, spiculated with architectural distortion. I'm 29 years old. Biopsy was inconclusive which led to the dr's decision to perform a lumpectomy.

Did others have to wait long for pathology following their lumpectomy? The waiting to date has been hard but manageable, each day it is getting harder to focus on my job with this huge unknown hovering over my head

Well, that certainly does sound disquieting. My experience was this--after my lumpectomies (I had to have re-excision due to "dirty" margins) my pathology was back within the week. I think one of them was back within 2-3 days, in fact.

Most of us find the waiting pretty bad. Hopefully you will have some answers before the end of the month. Try to keep your hands busy--painting, yoga, gardening, knitting. Busy hands keep your mind from perseverating too much. If the anxiety is overwhelming you, talk to your doctor about a course of medication. Many of us here have benefited from a little Xanax when the going got rough.

Let us know how it goes for you, okay?

That waiting period is awful. It's all you can think about. In the last 9 months I've had 5 biopsies (no malignancies). I was too antsy to be able to sit around, so I got on pinterest and started looking at projects related to mastectomies, and I have started sewing those under arm pillows for after surgery, seat belt cover cushions, and some drain bag holders. I am going to donate them locally for those patients who could use them (through nurse navigator, doctor's office, etc.) Even doing some sort of project around the house helps keep you busy. Mustlovepoodles is right - keep yourself physically busy. I also listen to contemporary Christian music on the radio in the car and at home.

    UPDATE

I had my wide local excision today. They removed a 5cm by 5cm area from my left breast. Now the wait for pathology to come back. I can see light at the end of the tunnel, but the waiting for every next step is hard. Thankfully I have company staying for a few days and work will be busy when I return, hoping it makes the days go by quickly
