Hello, I had a core needle biopsy last week, got the results early this week, which were ok, but now the nurse called yesterday and said the doctor and radiologist reviewed the x-rays and think he took the samples next to the lump and not directly from it. Is this common or something that happens rarely? I have to go back next week for a stereotactic mammogram biopsy now.

This is the way the system was designed to work. Its a safeguard.

When the path report comes back the radiologist compares the results to their opinion of your imaging as regards malignant vs benign. If the rad thought it was cancer and it comes back benign then it is called "discordant" and either additional imaging or a re-biopsy is recommended. It happens now and then, its not that uncommon.

I had a core biopsy repeated on a lymph node because it was discordant with the imaging. Sample came back with just adipose tissue if I remember correctly. It was in a difficult spot and apparently kept rolling out of the way. I thought the second dr was going to stand on my head to get the right angle. Took a while but he got the right spot. Second biopsy was positive. Better to have it retested just to be sure no to miss anything. It happens. Praying for good results for you.

Oh my! I'm sorry you have to go back in. I do agree with Legomaster225, better safe than sorry. I pray your results will still be benign. I have my core biopsy next week. I'm nervous. My original radiologist recommended a stereotactic biopsy but the second one at the hospital that does the biopsies changed it to core so hopefully it goes well. Anyway, I'll keep you in my prayers.

Thanks for replying, but is it common for them to miss the area in question, he took four different samples and missed the spot each time. I had my stereotactic mammo today and they weren't able to give me a direct answer to this question.
