Is having a lumpectomy just as good as having a mastectomy?

I always were told women should have a mastectomy because it get rid of all the cancer and women who have a lumpectomy has a high risk that the cancer will come back. Can somebody give me some good answers on these two subjects?

I think long term outcomes are pretty much the same, as long as radiation follows lumpectomy.

Making this choice depends on many factors some of which are beyond your control. A lumpectomy may be reasonable for a single small low grade tumor in a large breast, but not practical for multiple bilateral large malignant foci for which a mastectomy would be indicated. Of course these are the extremes of the possibilities but gives you an idea that its more than just a preference of patient or doctor.

djmammo thank for sending me this link I found it to be very helpful. I also think it's best to get a mastectomy with little risk of cancer coming back. My mass is about the size of a golf ball so I do not think the doctors will give me a lumpectomy anyway if it turn out to be cancer because of the size but anyway the doctor have already told me if it's cancer or not this mass go to come out. Wish me the best. I will keep you posted.
