My breast sonogram took 30 minutes

I’m 41 years old, no history of BC, had my first mammogram in June. Was called back for further imaging and a bi-lateral sonogram. I wasn’t totally surprised because I know I have dense breast tissue so I figured they just wanted more info for a baseline

Not so. The radiologist showed me images from my diagnostic mammogram on my left breast and they revealed micro calculations and recommended a biopsy “to be safe. And you’re young” were her words. Oh, no big deal, they’re usually benign is what everyone says but I know they only do biopsies for Birad 4 or 5 and that a 5 is almost always cancer. When I looked (briefly) at the mammogram image in the radiologist office I saw some rather big, bright white specks but I didn’t know what I was looking at so it was all mostly a blur.

Next I had a sonogram (this was already scheduled and I now knew I would need a biopsy). The sonogram took almost 30 minutes. The technician said they don’t usually take that long and that I have “very busy breasts” and to expect a follow up. Thankfully I already knew I had to get a biopsy but I am concerned about the length of time it took for my sonogram and the things she said.

Tomorrow I meet with a breast specialist who will go over my mammogram and sonogram results and order the biopsy. I’m sick to my stomach knowing that in less than 24 hours I can get the worst news of my life

Mostly here to just to vent and wonder if anyone else had a long sonogram and what their results were

Good luck to everyone on this forum. I never thought I’d find myself here

    Hi Kerri,

If it makes you feel better, my first breast ultrasound took a REALLY long time -- and I have pretty small breasts! I was in my mid twenties, and I think it was just because I had very dense breast tissue.

I am also in the waiting period right now -- just had my biopsy yesterday. Hope to get results back by the end of the week.

    Hang in there!

The length of the exam is irrelevant. The tech has to measure everything they see, in three dimensions so if one has a "busy breast' and the tech has to measure a dozen or more completely benign cysts the exam can last a very long time. Alternately measuring one big malignant mass can take only a few minutes. Let us know what the biopsy shows.

Thank you. That makes a lot of sense. I wish the tech would have explained that maybe I wouldn’t have worried quite so muc
