    Excellent suggestion DearLife! Buckwheat is considered a pseudocereal, (the ground seeds or 'groats' from the plant, anyone remember groats from the old fairy tales? They were always eating groats! Curds & whey too!).

    Buckwheat is gluten free (always good!), but unfortunately for us paleo peeps, it's definitely a no-no. For those who are 80/20 or just visiting Vegas, Buckwheat has an impressive nutritional profile with great dietary fiber, magnesium, copper and manganese. Where it falls short is that it rates approximately 70 on the glycemic scale (lower than most grains, but still relatively high)and approx. 80% of it's content is carb in the form of starch. One cup punches in with 122 carbs (yikes!) and 17 g of fiber (awesome!) . That's close to the daily limit for cave dwellers in one sitting. Peeps with GI problems and diabetics also might want to avoid buckwheat for obvious reasons.

    That said, if you're strolling through the 'grey area', want a noodle fix, are re-carbing or konjac isn't your thing, then buckwheat is a healthier alternative. Qunioa pasta would be another healthier alternative,Just don't go with the white wheat pasta kids!....like ever. :)))

    You're right DearLife, it wouldn't smell either LOL!

    thanks for the Konjac feedback Egads007. Think I may give them a go. I see they do a “rice” as well.

    Well I’m pretty muscle sore from my first workout, think it was the sumo squats. A walk and Yoga for me today. I’m back 24 hour fasting Mondays and Tuesday. Not sure I’m completely fat adapted yet butmight as get back in the saddle asap.

    Dear life’s post reminded me that we enjoyed cold soba several times in Japan on very hot days. Absolutely delicious served on their own with a small bowl of a light sauce to dip them in.but definitely not part of my LCHF lifestyle now I’m back home. Pity really they are so good

    Egads - I am still here. Have not been able to get on the computer for several days due to lack of time and the inability to be able to login to this site from my smartphone. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix that, I would appreciate it. Must have been due to an update on my Galaxy S8 as I have been able to login to this site for years. I am way behind on all of the reading material on here. DH had an accident Saturday afternoon that ended up with partially torn tendon and muscle tear in his dominant arm about 8 inches long...that's 20.32 cm for those of you to the north and it was very deep. He ended up requiring surgery Saturday night for it and can't use his arm for at least 4 weeks. I am with all the rest of the cave chicks but may be hit or miss for awhile. I did make jalapeno poppers yesterday to give DH something yummy and easy to eat with one hand. I assume everyone that likes jalapenos already knows how to make jalapeno poppers but if someone does want me to share the recipe, I am happy to.

    Thanks cowgal. Sorry your husband had an accident, fingers crossed for a quick and successful recovery. Did you bacon wrap those poppers? As soon as my plants start producing peppers we will be enjoying those as well!

    Egads - do you have a go to favourite bread recipe you would like to share?

    Good morning Cave Chickies! Sipping my coffee and getting ready for whatever the day brings.....let's hope it's good ;)

    Shazzzzz - Sumo squats! A girl after my own heart! I joined you in that same move yesterday.....do you do the wide stance sumos? My thighs are NOT thanking me today for that, so I hear ya' on the DOMS lol. 24 hour fasting Monday and today? so 48 hours??? I'd be tearing the paint off the walls LOL! Yes it is too bad about the soba....they are lovely things.

    Cowgal - OUCH!!!! Your poor husband.....how awful! That must have badly shook both of you up! Give him my best for a speedy recovery. I guess this means you're taking up all the slack?....no wonder you've been MIA. Glad you checked in and that you're holding as steady as possible. Jalapeno poppers.....I love me sum' o' doze! Yum!! Hope you took a pic! As for your phone it's most likely a setting. Go into your settings and make sure your browser is accepting cookies. BCO needs cookie acceptance (they aren't paleo...HAR!) Sometimes updates will automatically switch that off. Let us know if it works......we NEED YOU HERE!!! :)

    Vamp - Why yes, yes indeed I have some recipies lol! I'll pull together a few of my favs (most are in books).....some carby (treat bread) and some not. As for the 'flapper bread' I'm not going to be able to get to the great experiment for a bit....getting ready for vakay, leaving Thursday and damned if I'm cooking on vakay LOL!! Bacon wrapped poppers.....now both you gals have me drooling!

    Vakay - where are you off to Egads? Next month we are taking the kiddos your way to Marineland and the Falls. Can't wait to get away, but fear the eating out issue! No worries on the bread, I will continue to try new recipes and see what I can come up with. This am I made Lemon Minute Muffins and I think they are a hit with the kids too! Very Lemony - refreshing lol. BTW I was at Sams Club in the states and the cost of Almond Flour (Bobs) and almond butter is the same as what we pay at Costco before the exchange. I picked up a few things that I can't buy here in Canada.

    Vamp - I'm heading back to TO for 10 days to visit family and friends, I need a TO fix. I moved to Halifax 3.5 years ago, but REFUSE to change my location on my profile because it'll ALWAYS be home to me. *singing* I left my hearrrrrt in....well you know. Besides, I'm back in ON so often I might as well live there LOL! One of these days I'll probably be out your way, we should meet up, have a some paleo food n' wine n' fun! Marineland!!!! Omg, back in the 80's I visited there, had one of those big ol' fuzzy 80's sweaters on, fed those goats, they surrounded me and started chewing on my sweater....went screaming over the hill with a line of goats in hot pursuit. Fun place, you're going to have a great time....just don't wear a fuzzy sweater :))))) I'm surprised that the prices state side were on par...what a drag. I do love shopping south of the border, the variety of products is amazing! Lemon minute muffins, hmmmmmm, sounds like a post to me!!

    TWO CENT TUESDAY

    "Expect the worst, you'll never be disappointed" – My great grandmother.

    My timeline from finding my tumour to diagnosis and treatment was a long one, close to 5 months. Getting biopsy results was 2 months in the waiting.For the first few weeks I did the requisite hand wringing and endless back n' forthing over what it might be. It wasn't pleasant. It was about that point in time that my mother passed on the immortal words of my great grandmother; "Expect the worst, you'll never be disappointed". It was like an epiphany, making so much great sense to me.

    To accept that the news was probably bad, and being prepared to hear the dreaded words come out of my BS's mouth, actually made the waiting game easier.I wouldn't have had high hopes dashed. If by wondrous chance the news was good, well, Gran was right, again I wouldn't have been disappointed. I do take into consideration that this may not have been helpful if my timeline was a quick one. I wouldn't have had time to process all that we do during diagnosis. Little or no time to get over the shock and deal with a logical mindset. But I did have time, and Gran's immortal words were helpful, at least for me. I'm not suggesting there wasn't a glimmer of hope back then, however I saw the imaging reports. In all my newbie ignorance, even I could read between the '5 points suggesting malignacy' on my first US. After digesting Gran's words I went for a drive, parked and cried harder than I've ever cried. Huge heaving sobs that leaves one breathless. After this mini melt down I turned my back on tears, accepted what was most likely to come and soldiered on determined to not let my plight ruin an otherwise sunny life.

    Perhaps this statement Gran made well over 75 years ago was pessimistic, cynical, or just a product of her Scots/Irish Calvinistic upbringing. Harsh or not, it did well by me and does to this day. Thanks Gran, your rather gloomy outlook brought relief to this girl's mind just when she needed it most! And that's my 2 cents.

    What say you all? Do you have words to live by that help you through the tough times? Have your own 2 cents to fling out there? Go for it!

    JKL - LOL!!!! I think you HIIT (pun intended) the nail on the head! Funny thing is, when I was running for my sweater's life I still had the bag of corn feed clutched firmly in my hand. Screaming girl with kernels flying everywhere! Never thought to drop the damned bag and head for safety. No one ever accused me of being the brightest crayon in the box!

    Come to think of it, perhaps the goats were paleo and peeved I was feeding them grain......only took a lifetime to get the message and start HIIT'ing and Paleo'ing, that crayon thing agin.. :))))

    EDITED TO ADD: Everyone: Continued clean yesterday with 65-70 carbs, 93 gr protein, and a bunch o' healthy oils. Dinner was a nifty little dish, easy, tasty: http://www.rubiesandradishes.com/2013/03/18/crispy-chicken-thighs-from-the-lucky-penny-blog/

    Left the orange juice out, but left the clementines in, and added orange peppers for colour. Added garlic to sauce, think it would burn if added when frying off the chicken.as recipe directs. Squirted a bit of fresh lemon juice in the sauce at the end . Made the house smell delish! Don't make unless you have AC! Save for fall in that case.

    Love that about the opportunist! Regarding the saying, my husband and I have gone back and forth about this. He’s on the side of expecting the worst, but I argue that with- then didn’t you just spend all that time thinking the worst, negative things about your situation and perhaps it turned out to be nothing So, now it appears that you wasted all that time thinking negatively, assuming the worst, and you could have been happy and enjoying the moment.

    If one expects the worst and then never thinks of it again, then I can see how it could eliminate shock or sadness if bad news comes your way. But to live like that everyday, always expecting the worst, that sounds depressing to me. I choose to see the optimism and opportunity in things. 😊🌸✌🏻😉

    Egads, you're in Halifax? You lucky girl! I visited for the first time last month and spent nine nights there (including a five-day conference). I loved it!!!! And I've never seen my DH so relaxed and happy. Everyone smiles at you when they pass. I felt like I had stepped 35 years back in time but with modern conveniences!

    Ah the East Coast, one of my bucket list items! DH says in 15 years when he retires we will travel, so looking forward to it. For now our vacations are planned around the twins, which is quite ok with me.

    3 days all LCHF, I was wrong the twins didn't like the lemon minute muffins, but I do, a friend and her mom also enjoyed them too.

    Warrior Our Paleo Princess - never fear, like you I prefer to go with the positive. I only pull out my GGrandmother's words when the writing is on the wall and the situation is obvious. My results read like textbook malignancy...vascularity, arch distortion, spiculated and a big neon sign attached flashing 'cancer'. You're right, living like that daily isn't living....definitely not for me either! When I made good with it, prepared, I was able to make positive plans. Hope I didn't leave anyone with the impression that my grans words were something to live by....ugggg how awful would that be!!

    Pixie - too true! Your description of Halifax is spot on. It takes some getting used to a slower pace (big city runs in my veins), but the people here make it a very refreshing adjustment. If you're back this way drop me a line, free town tour and maritime hospitality is always in the agenda!

    Vamp - same goes to you, would be fun low carbing halifax style....lobster lol!! How you feeling darlin? Things getting brighter on your side?

    Very interesting vid by Dr. Rhonda Patrick....How diet, exercise and hyperthermic conditioning can change genes. Little on the long side, but easier than squats & lunges! Enjoy.....

    Emotionally days are getting easier. Physically not the greatest. Just tried a step and weights video, only made it part way and had to quit, started to feel nauseous. I know it will take time to get back to where I was, but this is frustrating! I lowered my step and dropped the weights down and still couldn't finish. I need a nap now or maybe head to the deck with my book for some fresh air....

    Vamp, smart that you're listening to your body and getting rest. What explanation, if any, is your PCP or MO giving for your status? I assume they took complete blood panels to see if anything is off kilter?

    Good morning, All. I'm on my way to the gym for weightlifting & cardio (probably a half hour each on a bike & the elliptical). I'm also planning to try a new machine that appears to concentrate on stretching all your muscles. I've never seen anything like it but it looks intriguing. I can't wait until school begins in September & the pool gets less crowded & I can begin "pool walking" again. I'll try to find time to check out your video when I return, Egads. Tomorrow's exercise will consist of much mall walking when I meet a friend for lunch (paleo, of course!) & shopping!

    Egads - I haven't been back to the doctor in awhile, the last blood test showed normal readings. Although I noticed from looking at my blood tests over the past year and a half that my blood count goes up and down, one test it's low at 3 point something the next it will be just above 4. something. My doctor retired July 1st and I should likely see if his temporary replacement has any thoughts. It's why I went to see a naturalpath and started LCHF, I wanted my energy back. My naturalpath figured I was borderline anemic.

    I have a question, I decided to do an online course about natural health and this was stated:

    Cherries, strawberries, and grapes contain ellagic acid to help combat cancer and are also high in antioxidants and blood cholesterol-lowering fiber. Tomatoes have chemicals that flush out cancer-causing agents, and tomatoes are also rich in antioxidant vitamins. Citrus fruits are packed with the antioxidant vitamin C and contain limonene, which boosts the body's immune system and also combats cancer-causing agents.

    If this is true why have I eliminated them from my diet? Well, I didn't give up tomatoes, just limited the amount I eat.

    I'm so glad I found you all. Guess you could say I'm trying a Paleo/Keto path. Very new to it but I'm hopeful. Needing to eliminate sugar and processed foods from my life. Looking forward to learning a lot.

    Vamp - to answer your question re: fruits....EXACTLY!! Your question is where I part ways with Keto. Keto is good, great in fact, especially for those that need to lose weight, diabetics, bi-polar and epileptic peeps.....they are candidates to become 'lifers'. IMHO (and I might catch hell from the keto peeps), it's not for everyone. I find it (personally) too restrictive, and restrictive is the exact opposite of what I was looking for. It was hard enough losing the wheat & grain in the beginning, but to eliminate that many fruits....well that tore it for me. Now that said, there are many levels of keto (just as in paleo), so adjusting to suit your needs/wants is very simple. I'm sure that there are many that log more that 20 carbs/day....up to 50 before you're knocked out of ketosis, so there is room to include berries. Berries are the fruit du' jour for both Paleo and Keto kids. I have them almost every day in season. Low carb and delish. I also enjoy an apple a day....maybe an orange or banana if the mood strikes. Cutting that would suck the joy out of my life, not to mention the loss of the many nutritional benefits you listed. I guess this is why I couldn't do 20 net carbs a day, besides I work out and need the extra. I also hate having to keep track of my food....too much work! (albeit kinda necessary in the beginning) I don't count carbs....just a loose calculation in my head, I don't even do the net carb thing anymore.I average 65 when not on a clean run,100-125 when I have a particularly intense workout, and 60-80 otherwise. This leaves room for the nutrition of fruit. I don't gain weight and my blood says I'm okey dokey. If you want to remain true to keto, stick with the berries to keep the carbs at par. If you're eating plenty of veg, the fiber takes care of the rest. Sweetie, make an appointment and go see the temp doctor, maybe a fresh look at what you've been experiencing might be helpful. Get another blood work up and see if there are changes. You shouldn't be feeling this bad.....had it very rough! Worth a try.....we want ya' all healthy and feeling good!

There is a ton of info on paleo in my original post you can sift through, or just ask....one of us can probably help out. We are a varied group (even got us a vegetarian.....the ultimate paleo unicorn) but all dedicated to better health. Sooooooo…..you have just started....how are you finding it so far? Btw, I ADORE your profile pic....that is 10 shades of awesome!!

    Egads - Keto is out for me, that's why I call it LCHF. Paleo allows fruit eh, I like this as I miss berries and apples and banana's. Yesterday my estimated totals say 89 regular carbs. Maybe a bit high? It was those darn muffins I made, sooooo good! :) I am loosing weight and it's actually staying off and not coming back again like those first couple pounds did. I stopped at a health store today to check out pricing on some vitamins I have been taking. Talked to a lady who had breast cancer 4 years ago, she did chemo and rads said it took a year before she could exercise again. I am hoping that because I didn't have chemo my time will not take as long as that. I know everyone is different, it just seems like I start to finally feel good and then get knocked back down. I will call the Doc and see what he thinks. No 100km Grandfondo bike ride for me this year, heck I don't think I can do the 50 either. Maybe next year!

    Vamp, Isay eat your berries (bananas are pretty sugary though...😉)!! I bet when you calculate the amount that you’d eat in a sitting it probably is one serving. I say go for it. They’re sweet and great for digestion too. It’s a win win.

    LOL Pi I have that same problem, hence eating nearly 4 of those Lemon Minute Muffins throughout the day yesterday! I am happy to say that my pre cancer clothing is fitting better these days! 12 more pounds to go!!!

    Maybe I can save bananas for when I start riding again - long rides. I use to do 80-100km, haven't been on my bike in almost a month and that was barely a 20.

    Yay for berries I am loving this much better than that Keto diet!

    Pixi - I think theres a 12 Step program for that 'hi I'm Pixi and I'm a muffinaholic.' Tried Keto muffins?

    Vamp - Anything you can pick off a tree or the ground is paleo. 89 carbs is not high...it's within the weight loss grade (weight loss sweet spot. If you've exercised you can even go higher. Eat a banana today, berries tomorrow or however...just keep a loose count in your head...you'll know when you're going overboard. Your dinner plate should be 2/3 veg, with small amounts of starchy veg. You're seeing results...YAY!!!! *high 5*...proof is in the pudding! Lol there's a paleo pudding. See the chart below:

    Vamp that has always been my concern and question about keto- if we know fruits have anti cancer compounds then should we eliminate them? i remember in Gary Taunes book that he said some people cant eat even one apple and be a healthy weight, so my theory is some people may need to be super low carb but the key is to lose weight and if youre doing it at 86, go ahead. I think if you average around 75 you will be pleased with your health.

    i am back on track with the clean eating.

    I am against expecting the worst! Thats a tough way to live. One of our mottos is “No regrets” and that helps my overanalyzer mind. DH and I argue about “what goes around, comes around”. i truly believe that is true but he does not.

    Cowgal I think there is an app for the site that might work better although I just log in to regular site on my ipad. Gee that sound like a bad injury. A friend tore a bicep at work and it took a long time to heal. I hope DH is not quite as severe.
