Is there an alternative to anti nausea pre med Aloxi?

I get Aloxi as an anti nausea pre med but I think it's causing some side effects and I was wondering if anyone is given something else instead.

I was given Aloxi but also Emend pills prior to chemo for nausea. Then I had to take Emend morning after chemo also as it's a two dosage med. Then it was just compazine every four hours and Zofran if needed. Emend was only one I took both prior and after. Maybe you can take that instead of Aloxi. They gave me the Emend pills immediately before they started the chemo drip. Best of Luck

    Hi LeesaD:

Thanks for the reply. I'll ask them about the Emend. The Aloxi works well enough but I think it might be responsible for my altered taste perception of water, which lasts until a week before the next infusion, and the more infusions I have, the more I decide that I really don't like that particular side effect.

HI WB3, I hope you are doing as well as can be. I did not get any relief with the standard anti nausea meds. They tried everything (Aloxi, Emend, Steroids, Zofran, Compazine) and the last one they tried was called Sancuso. Apparently it works well for many people who have difficulties with others or do not respond well to other anti-nausea meds, but it didn't touch my nausea either. I did get some relief with Ativan and Phenergan and I finally went with medical marijuana, which helped me tremendously and I am fortunate to be in a state where it was/is legal at the time.

Also, many people have an altered sense of their taste of water (and foods) due to the chemo meds. Mine lasted the entire time and did not change until I was completely done with all infusions.

I wish you all the very best throughout treatment and onward!

The chemo itself caused taste issues for me as well. I had 3 sessions without Aloxi and then 3 with it, and the taste changes were the same both ways. Water was one of the things that made me the most nauseous / tasted bad; so, I had to use flavor drops or little bits of juices so that I could drink any of it.

At first I though the taste was from the chemo but I happened to be drinking a bottle of water when I went in for the previous infusion and took swig right after the last pre med injection before the chemo and there it was. Bleh. I can't really describe it accurately but to give it a try, it's an unfresh faintly sweet taste. Kind of similar to that lightly fruity flavored 0 calorie non carbonated water or very lightly sweetened room temperature iced tea, which I also hate. I don't know why it gets to me so much. Vomiting is near the top of my list of things I hate most but I'm starting to think maybe I would rather vomit a few times than endure "the taste" again.

The taste lasts about two weeks and I've found that the only water I can tolerate in any quantity during that time is the lime flavored La Croix. Interestingly I typically find that too bitter, but during the bad taste period, it tastes more lemon flavored to me. So I think what is happening is the Aloxi is disrupting the signaling from the taste buds that detect bitter. I think if you remove the slight bitter taste from water, it makes it taste kind of sweet.

I think the chemo just attenuates how things taste to me in general and makes everything feel kind of scratchy, gritty and spicy like simultaneously having a cold and acid reflux.
