Hi. I have a mammogram on August 2nd. I have heterogeneously dense breast tissue and was wondering if getting an US or an MRI would be a good idea? I was also wondering about a 'lump' I can see and feel under my armpit is actually a lump or muscle? It stays the same even if I flex my arm, but I can't tell if it's a lymph node or not. I've never had an US done on my breasts. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

hi! I have the same issue...I usually get US's because the mammo's don't always tell the full story. I started with comprehensive mammo's due to nipple discharge/lumps, then moved into the US's because of the density issues. I was in my twenties...and my dr preferred to skip mammos. But now I get mammo's annually and US's just in case. I think its always a good idea to get both, and so does my breast surgeon...

Dense breasts absolutely mammo w us always. My family doc told me new school of thought is both. I had only mammos religiously since my early 30s under the guidance of old gyn. The rest is history.

Does your doctor know about the lump? The reason I ask is you may need a diagnostic mammogram, rather than a screening mammogram. With the diagnostic, they know right out of the gate that they're looking for something in particular. I'd also follow it up with an ultrasound, since you have dense breasts. Call your doctor this week so you can get it all straightened out ahead of time.

    Hi,

I agree with Mustlovepoodles, call your dr, make sure they know about the lump and if this isn't your first mammo and they know you have dense breasts, I'm surprised that an US is recommended. I'd request it for sure. That's what made the difference of them finding something on me.

Hi. I've had mammograms before, but haven't had one in 3 1/2 years. I have been dx with the dense breast tissue but they have never done an US. I am having the diagnostic mammo. No- my primary doctor does not know about the lump. I also have lines that are indented on my breast that are on the far right upper side of my right breast and that is the armpit that has the lump. I'm sorry I'm being so 'needy'... I am thinking too hard about this. Your help and calmness is helping me. I thank you for all your advice.
