Hi All,

Well - I've been putting it off - for months. And, am more than ready (physically) to have the final phase of my breast reconstruction done.

My problem is - I'm the main person who drives our 11 yr. DD around. My parents are almost 80 and my DH's job is unpredictable and he's not always available to drive her.

So - wondering - what's the recovery like? About how soon can one expect to be able to drive?

Any info would be great!

Dancing, I am having mine done on July 20th. My PS said a week of recovery. I am not expecting much pain in my breasts because I can’t feel much there. I think this will be a walk in the park compared to the BMX with DIEP

I didn’t do nipple reconstruction but did fat grafting that came from my stomach. Expect a lot of bruising. Without much feeling in my chest that wasn’t really any bother. The donor site though was the majority of the pain. Hated my PS for 2-3 days anytime I had to move. I forgot when I drove, probably by day 3-4. That area was pretty tender though for a good two weeks. Driving and easy cooking was the extent of my activities, was told to take it easy to let everything heal for 2 weeks. Very happy to added that step to my reconstruction

I did both nipple recon and fat grafting at the same time. My donor areas (thighs) were sore, but besides that not much pain at all. I was able to drive just fine after a day or two, it just felt like bad muscle aches. I went back to work after a week but I could have gone back after a day...

I had fat grafting but had a nipple sparing reconstruction. The nurse at my PS office told me to expect it to feel like "I had done 1,000 crunches in an hour and a half" after surgery. She was on target with that description! I was very sore for about 3 weeks. Getting up and down was painful but tolerable. The bruising was bad.I looked like I had been run over by a truck. I was allowed to drive as soon as I was off the pain meds.

Good luck, Elizabeth!! You'll do great!!

Not to rain on the parade, but my experience wasn't so great. I didn't have nipple reconstruction but I did have fat grafting to smooth out wrinkles in the DIEP breast and fill in some low spots around the margins. The donor sites were on the front and side of the hips and inner thighs. The hip sites were extremely painful for several weeks - there were sharp stabbing pains every time I sat down. I could drive OK, but getting into the car seat was an adventure. It was almost two months before I could wear non-stretchy pants without padding the waistband with surgical pads. After 6 months, the hip donor sites still swell up a bit at the end of the day. The thigh donor sites were a little sore, but not too bad. I had the surgery right before the winter holidays and only missed a couple of days of work.

Can anyone recommend a plastic surgeon in NYC that does nipple reconstruction after radiation? My surgeon is near refusing because I had radiation before my reconstruction and I’d really like to gst a second opinion. Thanks
