DCIS TO DCISM

I was diagnosed with DCIS and am recovering from a bilateral mastectomy. My pathology came back saying I do have extensive DCIS but also microinvasion of IDC. One of two of my sentinel lymph nodes came back positive for cancer. I am now to have a CT scan next week to see if it has spread to other parts of my body. I went from thinking it was noninvasive to invasive now to fearing that it’s all over me. Has anyone else experienced this diagnosis? I am terrified!

kimnicole, I'm so sorry you've had your news go from bad to worse - and worse yet. That's not the way my diagnosis unfolded yet I can understand that it must be very disorienting and frightening to go from in situ to microinvasive, let alone learning of the positive node (the latter's such a punch in the gut, isn't it?)

I know that there are other women on this board who've gone through similar with or without the positive node. I'm sure they will be along to support you soon but I wanted to reach out in the meantime and let you know you're not alone. Also, although a positive node is not good news, it's certainly not a death sentence (although it pretty much felt like it when I got the news). It definitely does not mean it's necessarily spread beyond the nodes. You'll feel better after the CT scan when you know the extent of disease. It's hard in the meantime, of course. The waiting is always tough. Please know that there are many women here who understand and will support you. Take care.
