So anxious and frustrated

I found a lump on June 11. June 13 I went to my dr and she sent me for a mammogram and ultrasound. A week later (June 20) I had my mammogram and ultrasound. I assumed they would see something completely benign and that would be the end of it. Instead they recommended I get a biopsy. My dr called later that day and she said she was putting in a referral to a breast surgeon. I spent the next few days an anxious mess, expecting to get a call with an appointment at any time. That Friday I called and they told me they were working on the referral. Monday I called again and they had just sent the referral to the dr that morning and the surgeons office will call me soon. Today is Wednesday June 27 and I finally caved and called the surgeon and the earliest they can get me in is 3 weeks away... July 18th. And thats not even for the biopsy, thats just for the consult.

I feel like this is such a crazy long wait. I'm doing the best I can to stay occupied but I'm almost always out of my mind with anxiety. I just put a call into my regular doctor again to see if they can get me a referral to someone else sooner.

How long is a reasonable amount of time to wait? I had a friend who recently went through something similar and she had her biopsy within days of her mammogram. I feel completely forgotten and brushed aside.

Could you go somewhere else? You could call around and see if you can get it sooner. My mother needed to see a cardiologist and her doctor's office couldn't get her in for over a month. I called my medical group we got her in 2 days.

I wonder if there is any reason why the radiologist is not doing the biopsy. Perhaps call back your Dr. office and tell them about the soonest appt you could get. Ask if the recommend someone else or if they could call and get you in quicker. Explain how anxious you are about this all. Id also ask what it is they are seeing and then ask why they are not recommending where you get the mammo/sono done to do the biopsy. Maybe they are not sure whether you need it or not and want a surgical opinion.

Hope you get your answers quickly.

Hi there sorry your having to wait so long but just to reassure you there are lots of us that had a bit of a wait. I know it feels stressful I recently had to have a mammogram and biopsy to rule out a recurrence and mine took over a week for the mammogram appt and then two weeks to get to my plastics to get the biopsy. Yes I had anxiety like you wouldn't believe .. But the most common BC doesn't normally grow super fast so there doesn't have to be a huge rush. Hope this helps calm your worries a little. I do agree with above most of us get biopsy results first then consult with breast surgeon.

    Thanks for the replies.

A nurse from my primary doctor called me back and she was so understanding. I told her my mental health can't wait that long and she said she completely understands. She's going to talk to my doctor and they are going to find someone else for me to see, hopefully sooner.

The place I went for my mammo/ultrasound is strictly imaging so they don't do biopsies. He didn't really tell me much about what he saw. He gave me the disk of the images to bring with me when I get the biopsy but thats about it. He was one of those book smart people who used lots of big words and had no bedside manner.

I also forgot to mention that when I had the mammogram, I had a bit of weird gross discharge from the nipple with the lump. It totally freaked me out and the mammogram lady seemed a little surprised but it as well. I also had precancerous cells found in a mole I had removed from my other breast when I was a teenage. So everything is just sending my brain into overdrive!

I'm still fairly young, 33. I know odds are on my side here but the waiting is killing me.

Good to know about biopsy first and then onto breast surgeon!

I completely understand and it probably is nothing and don't freak about the nipple discharge that's not as unusual as one might think.

    Sending you good vibes

I would try and go somewhere else...when I went through BC my first mammogram was the 25th of Jan and my first chemo was Feb 23rd.  My ob recommended me to one hospital but I got a second opinion from another treatment center.  I was going to have to wait weeks for important scans and additional from the first hospital but the second opinion hospital had all additional tests completed within a week.  Good luck
