Hello!

I just need to seek advice as this is the only place I feel safe. I had a spot show up on a 3D Mam over a month ago and the doctor rated it a Birads 4 stating there were several characteristics he didn’t like and told me to do an ultrasound to which they couldn't find it. Then I had a stereotactic biopsy scheduled but not performed due to not being able to find it again. They told me to come back in 6 months but due to family history, some advice here, and my own person gut I decided to seek a secon opinion with a breast surgeon. He felt the lump that showed up on the initial mammo but said he didn’t believe it felt like cancer. Due to my family history he wanted to be safe so he had me go in for an MRI on Friday. Not 45 mins after I left the MRI the doctor called me...insert panic...and told me that the left side did indeed light up and he wants to go forward with a biopsy. I have not received the paperwork yet to read the results myself but I'm getting myself worked up now. So here I am just seeking some advice or anyone that went through something similar.

Thank you!

MRIs are very sensitive scans. They pickup just about everything, malignant or benign. By light up he means that the spot does have a higher uptake of contrast dye than the surrounding tissue which makes it a suspicious spot. A biopsy at this point is the only way to determine if it’s a cancer or something benign. The best advice I can give you is go about your life like you always have until you have the results. Worry and anxiety will not change tomorrow’s outcome but it will destroy your joy in today.

Lula thank you so much for the reply. I have read about the false positives so that puts me at ease a bit. I think what alarmed me was the quick call from the doctor followed by their ability to get me in Monday which has not been the case previously.

Monday I am scheduled for an ultrasound guided biopsy to which my doctor said he doubts they will be able to find it since they couldn’t last week and if that’s the case then I need to come back in for An MRI guided biopsy. Just more waiting!

I just want to get to the bottom of it and move forward!

My BS told me breast MRIs have a 30% false positive rate--"they light up *everything*." Good that you're getting a biopsy--that'll tell you for sure what's going on. All good thoughts your way.

Thanks Ingerp! I am grateful that they are being over cautious due to my family history but this waiting is the worst! Thanks for the good thoughts! Praying that they find it tomorrow on the ultrasound so we can biopsy it and move forward!

I'm surprised that they ordered a US guided biopsy when they've already noted that it couldn't be found with US. Seems like more anxiety-provoking waiting for sure! But then again - they may need to say they tried before insurance will cover a biopsy with MRI?

I had an MRI after diagnosis to verify that nothing else concerning was going on. There were some areas in the other breast, but none that they felt warranted biopsy. And the MRI was consistent with what had already been seen by mammo and US for the tumor.

I hope that they can do what needs to be done tomorrow. And that it's all benign!

Well I had the Ultrasound guided biopsy todsy. Apparently what showed up on the MRI was different than the original findings on the mammogram so they were able to locate it. It is a very large area that the ultrasound tech said looks like normal tissue to her but I had the doctor show me the MRI and he said the large area lit up does not look like cancer but he also said he has no explanation for it and he has never seen something like this so they are not wasting any time and they did the biopsy to be safe! Should hopefully have the results by Wednesday!
