One in Three Women Undergoing Breast Reconstruction Have Complications
One in five requires more surgery, and in 5 percent of cases, reconstruction fails.
Women who opt for breast reconstruction after a mastectomy have a strikingly high rate of complications, according to a new report. One in three develop a postoperative complication over the next two years, and one in five requires more surgery. In 5 percent of cases, reconstruction fails.
Those who used their own body tissue to rebuild a breast had significantly higher rates of complications than those who used artificial implants, the study found.
The women who used tissue transplanted from the belly area also had weaker abdominal muscles that made simple activities like getting out of bed difficult. But they were more satisfied with their breasts at the end of the process and enjoyed a greater degree of sexual well-being than women with implants.
"They key takeaway from this research is that these are complicated decisions," said Dr. Edwin Wilkins, a professor and researcher at Michigan Medicine and an author on both of the studies, published on Wednesday in JAMA Surgery. "These operations are not without risk."

I guess I was lucky. I had DIEP, the real deal no muscle. I didn't have any complications at all. Although after 6.5 years the sensations are coming back still and it can be uncomfortable at night along the abdomen incision line.
-
Also had DIEP and no abdominal weakness or issues.. Had major issues with expanders though.
-
the weakness happens in TRAM flap and the other flap procedures that use muscle. DIEP, SGAP, TDAP do not use muscle. And you really do have to read the whole article. I believe the PS who is quoted in the article is the same one that commented on the current Cleveland Clinic MX disaster and said a PS is not required to get a good result with mx and no recon.
-
I didn't have expanders for my DIEP.
-
I think expanders are only used for implants.
-
It seems TWills had both not sure if expanders were preparation for her but my suster in law had expanders under the muscle in preparation for her DIEP. She wound up canceling her DIEP surgery. I had mx then 4 months later DIEP at a different hospital.

Meow, this is something I was wondering about with the flap surgeries. Sometimes it seems that expanders are sued and sometimes not. In your case, does this mean that the skin on your new breast is the skin that used to be on your belly?
-
Yes, my skin was relocated. But the color watch was perfect, just a white line for scaring. I am really pleased with it. I have a "new" belly button which is so weird. The feeling is still coming back after 6 years. Sometimes it is a good thing other times it bothers me.

Meow, thanks for the info.
