Hello. I am new to this community. I have a family history of breast cancer. My mother had ductal and lobular cancer in both breasts at the same time which is really rare. My grandmother also had ductal breast cancer. My mother had double mastectomy, naturally, and my grandmother had single mastectomy. I recently underwent a diagnostic mammogram as well as an ultrasound for a 1.2 cm mass near my chest muscle. I cannot feel this mass due to the location. The radiologist said to me while he was looking at it on the ultrasound that he could not decide whether to biopsy it or do a 6 month follow-up. He chose a 6 month follow-up and told me that it was probably an island of breast tissue. He then rated it as a Bi-Rads 3 and said that I needed to repeat the Diagnostic Mammogram and Ultrasound. I have decided to get a second opinion at the Baylor Breast Center in Houston. Has anyone else had this happen and am I being over-reactive? Thank you in advance for your time.

No, I’ve not had that happen, but I’d do exactly what you are by getting that 2nd opinion. I know I wouldn’t be comfortable wondering for the next 6 months. The peace of mind would be well worth it for me. Keep us posted!

I would definitely get that second opinion. This radiologist doesn't sound like he has a good grasp on the diagnosis. In this particular situation i would not be content to let it ride for 6 months.

I am trying to remain calm about this bc I have strange things happen to me. The first baseline mammogram and ultrasound I had showed something on my left breast in 2013. I got all the way to the day of surgery and when they took me into the room to ultrasound the spot to make sure where it was, they couldn't find it anymore. I was super happy. The next mammogram I had in 2016 was normal. Now this diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound finds a "mass" in my right breast near my chest muscle that I cannot feel. I can feel a small knot in the outer quadrant of my breast but it does move with my other tissue, although it is very, very hard. The radiologist wrote that there are other areas of "breast tissue" that look similar but it would also be a "good point of reference" for stability in 6 months also. I guess I am not as worried about that one as much. I just don't like the one near my chest that has never been picked up on a mammogram. They said that in prior mammos, they didn't pull my breast our far enough to compare. I don't know. It is very disappointing if this is the case.
