Reasons to skip ultrasound and go straight to biopsy?

Hi everyone... I am a newbie and still a bit confused about the process we are all going through. And quick history.. I had my first mammogram around 41 where my doc and the breast clinic established a baseline (this is what my doc said after I was called back for mag views, ultrasounds, and 6-12 month follow ups..)

These tests came back as benign findings and it was recommended that I have 'regular breast screenings for low risk patient's afterward.

So fast forward a few years and doc recommends another routine mammogram... Which I do. I'm called back for more views and tests..after which they classify as probably benign and ask for another diagnostic mag view in 6 months.

After getting the diagnostic they're recommending the cluster be biopsied with no mention of an ultrasound.

Edit: they never even mentioned ultrasound.. those are my words. They just recommended biopsy and never ordered an ultrasoind during this proscess. (With my first mammogram, they did).

Never heard of skipping ultrasound, usually they have the equipment at the clinic. The ultrasound could see if they are solid vs fluid filled. The mamogram and ultrasound go hand in hand for diagnostics and are normally at the same facility. The MRI usually done before surgery and after biopsy. I can't believe it is about money/insurance.

Yeah- I’m curious why they didn’t order an ultrasound when I got the first callback, nor when I did the 6 follow-up diagnostic mammogram. When I did my first go round, they were looking because of the density of my breasts. This time around it’s a cluster new micro-calcifications. So it is weird that no ultrasound was before recommending a biopsy? Also, The first mammogram was a digital and one I had last year and the follow up is a 3D . Would that ma

I did not have an ultrasound two years ago (nor nine years ago when I had ALH). I *did* have an MRI after the biopsy, though. This time I had an ultrasound but no MRI. I don't see why you'd need both. (And just a heads up if you end up getting an MRI--my BS said they have a *high* false positive rate--like 30%. Something may well show up that isn't malignant at all.)

I think it is because the calcifications don't show on ultrasound, so they are doing a stereotactic (mammography guided) biopsy. They would have gone ahead and done the ultrasound if they thought it was something that could be biopsied by ultrasound.

Well you get different images. When I had my yearly MRI they found something that triggered a suspicion with my history and because MRI flagged it they went with MRI guided biopsy. When months later I had my regular mamogram they could see right away it was fat necrosis. Really didn't need the biopsy.
