edited June 2018 in Waiting for Test Results

hi everyone. New to this forum. Have been reading through topics and this is such an informative group with amazing people in it.

I found a lump last Friday. Sent for Mam and US. Tech told me after US that would need biopsy. Yesterday was biopsy, which wasn't too bad for what is was. The only thing I really know is US findings were birad score of 5. I was shocked. After all that I've read, I'm guessing I should be ready for a cancer diagnosis? I know there still that 5% chance..but feeling that "why would I be so special"...

Anyone here with a score of 5 but benign result?

As you already know, BIRADs5 isn't a good thing. There are a few women here who have had benign results, but the great majority have not. We like to say it's not cancer until pathology proves it. I'm sure you are worried, and with good reason. Just know that if it is cancer, it's very treatable. Cancer treatment isn't fun, but its doable.

Fingers crossed for ya. Let us know how it goes.

    Thanks Mustlovepoodles.

From what I've read on here, the waiting is one of the hardest parts. I hate the not knowing what the future holds. But I'm glad to now be part of such a wonderful group.

Hi My doctor told me not to worry too much about the birads score ...have they scheduled your biopsy yet? If you already got your biopsy did it hurt?I have my biopsy on Monday ....so nervous my Birads score was 4....

    hi Shellshell 69.

I had a core biopsy yesterday. It really wasn't bad at all. The tenderness after and today was worse than actual procedure. The only thing I felt was the titanium marker they put in the end...but I think my freezing was wearing off.

Good luck on Monday. Keep me posted :

Shellshell - Don't worry about the biopsy. You'll be fine. Good luck

i am hoping it is not bad ...I have been sitting here looking at my report and I realized that they seen the architectural distortion on both the mammo and US which is not good I was hoping it was only on one ...I am having a moment of thinking the worst right now I just want to know if it is or is not cancer so I can be done with all the waiting and imagining the worst...the imaging center did call me to remind me that I have a appointment and all I could think of was ....duh like I would just forget that I had appointment for a biopsy to find out if I have cancer don't think it will slip my memory ...

Got my results back yesterday...one day later...and it's cancer. Go in today for more info. But she did tell me it is non-invasive. So that's good.

Shellshell...wish I could give you an uplifting message to cheer you. The wait will be over before you know it!

Nonomimi5...thanks for thinking of me :

I'm sorry you got bad news. If it's non-invasive, it's probably stage 0, DCIS. DCIS is not treated with chemo, just surgery, possibly radiation, and hormone inhibitors. If you have to have BC, stage 0 is about as good as it gets. Best of luck to you.

well, looks like my initial diagnosis was incorrect.

Pathology reports says intermediate grade (2/3) invasive ductal adenocarcenoma.

No clue what this means. Now to wait again til i get in to see surgeon.

I am so sorry to hear that. It sounds like something I had. I will keep my fingers cross that it did not spread to the lymph. Everything will be fine. Stay strong.

It was read wrong over the phone. It said negative for vascular/lymphatic space invasion. Guess they missed the first thing on report that says intermediate grade invasive ductal adenocarcinoma. It also reads tubular grade 3, nuclear grade 2 and miotic grade 1 for a total score of 6.

That's all I know for now. Not overly sure what that means.

Guess my biggest question is, will I need chemo??

It's so nice to come on here and see I'm not alone. Thinking of all of you

Hi there Krysm7 and I'm so sorry about your diagnosis. As for next steps, it sounds like you need to be extra vigilant in asking for copies of your reports. And as for chemo, the information you need most is size of the tumor, ER and PR status, and Her2 status. And then your doctor may order an Oncotype DX test. Here is a useful article to read to get the basics:

    https://www.cancer.org/treatment/understanding-you...

If we can do anything at all to help please continue to come back and ask more questions. I'm not going to lie; it will be a tough few months but you will come out the other side really soon. Best wishes.

thanks for the link Georgia1. That was super helpful. I'm guessing they will test ER, PR and Her2 when they remove the lump?

This all seems so surreal still. Really hope I get in to see my surgeon quickly.

Krysm--ER/PR status should be quickly available from your biopsy. HER2 can take a while longer since many initial tests come back "equivocal". Final staging will be after surgery and a look at the lymph nodes. Have you really not gotten a hard copy of your report? There are lots of people here who can help you interpret it.

Realistically, if you end up HER2+, chemo will probably be recommended, although if it's only Stage 1, Taxol is a relatively gentle chemo drug. I just finished 4 of 12 and have had almost no SEs. Hang in there. As everyone says, life gets easier once you have a firm dx and tx plan in place.

    hi Ingerp

I did get a hard copy, but there is no mention of ER/PR status. I asked GP when saw her today, and she said that will happen after full biopsy when lump and lymph nodes are removed. How do I find people that can interpret it. It really doesn't say much unfortunaletly

Hi there! Also new and have the same birads score of 5. I am also assuming I have cancer. I am wondering if anyone else was moved very quickly thru the diagnostic process?

Mammo and US on Tuesday, which was yesterday, I now have a biopsy scheduled on Friday, and an appt with the breast surgeon on Monday!? Should I be super worried that this is happening so quickly? Like do they think the cancer is so advanced that’s there’s no time to waste, or does it happen that way sometimes?

    Glad I found you ladies!

Misha, welcome! Many many biopsies turn out to be benign so there's still hope! Let us know how it all goes, we're thinking of you!

As you probably know, BIRADS5 is not good. 95% cancer. But there are women on this board who were BIRADS5 and their masses turned out benign. So, there is still a small chance that this will not be cancer.

I don't think "being super worried" is required. I'm a practical gal--its either gonna go one way or the other. Worry won't change the outcome, but it will make me sleepless and anxious. Try to keep busy while you wait. IMO, the waiting is the worst part.

Misha13- appointments moving fast is not an indicator of fast moving cancer. I had mammo & US on a Wednesday, biopsy on that Friday, following week results and my OB had already set me up with a surgeon. Be glad your team is getting you in, so try to take some deep breaths to relax. You will get through this. Sending HUGS.

    My birads 4A.
