Using DIM with an aromatase inhibitor
I was diagnosed 7 years ago with ER+ metastatic breast cancer. I go to Dana-Farber for treatment - love it there. I also go to the Block Center in Chicago yearly for a slightly different perspective. The Block Center has suggested I take DIM in addition to continuing with my aromatase inhibitor. Checking this with Dana-Farber they are saying they would not recommend it with an aromatase inhibitor. I have been looking at research trying to resolved this difference of opinion. There does seem to be some split on effect with aromatase inhibitors - I think that is why Dana-Farber says no. But I am wondering if anyone else has some experience or knows of some articles that might be informative. Real research and/or individual experience always means the most to me.
Thank you for anyone's thoughts.....

The people at Dana-Farber are real researchers. I would think they have looked at this and are advising you based on what is known as of now.

Dana-Farber has been really meaningful to me. And looking at the research as much as possible I do see a lot of variation in results. They are advising me that the variation makes them believe this would not be a good choice now. If I was on tamoxifen, they way they would be more comfortable. My markers have been off a bit for the first time in the last seven years but they do not see anything on my imaging yet. Dr. Block in Chicago supports mainstream approaches but does push the boundaries for complementary treatments compared to Dana-Farber. The question is where is my comfort level? At this point in my treatment we are trying to figure everything out. Wonderfully, I am living outside the boundaries. An extraordinary responder! But that means everything is not clear. Funny place to be.

Hope2moi....I take DIM in leu of an aromatase inhibitor. IMO taking DIM with an aromatase inhibitor is redundant. Just my opinion.

Dear dtad,
Thanks for your response. Getting others experiences is valuable. I have heard of using DIM in leu of tamoxifen especially. I do get your point about being redundant. That is something I am wondering also. Again thank you for your insight. I made me think of that point again.

Hi Hope,
I am also visit the Block Center once a year. I am taking the same supplement (along with the others recommended to me). Did you ask Dr. Block about what Dana-Farber has suggested? Just wondering. Thank you for posting. Dr. Block has been studying cancer a long time too!
Hugs,
Sue

Dear Lilsuzq,
Dana-Farber has said that there is research with DIM might have mild estrogenic effect. So theoretically it could exacerbate hormone sensitive conditions such as breast, uterine, and ovarian cancer; endometriosis; and uterine fibroids. However, preliminary research also suggests that DIM might have antiestrogen effects and could potentially be protective against hormone-dependent cancers. So they are saying until more is known, they advise women with hormone-sensitive conditions to avoid DIM. I am on an aromatase inhibitor. Dana-Farber would be more comfortable with me taking DIM if I was on tamoxifen.
I just saw Dr. Block recently. When I call there, the staff cannot really answer this question. Dr. Block wanted me to do more things like take DIM. His oncologist said everything looked great and just basically keep up what I am doing. Dr. Block said he disagreed. Recently a staff member there said I could ask questions of Dr. Block in a phone conversation. I did not know that was an option. I am sure this will have a charge. I am kind of thinking this through. I know Block will say that there is research supporting DIM use for it's antiestrogen effects, because Dana-Farber is saying that too. I do not know if there is research looking at metastatic cancer/aromatase inhibitor/DIM use. Again, it is kind of odd being on the edge of research.
I would love to see what you think about your experience at Block. I have been going there for about 5 years. I am using them more for their nutritional advice now. The aromatase inhibitor has tanked my metabolism and dealing with my weight has been a problem. Block is actually more helpful with this for me than Dana-Farber, although my insurance will not pay for phone call conversations with the nutritionist. I am grateful for the help though. Hope your experience is good.
Wishing the best....

Hi everyone...the theory behind DIM is that there are good and bad estrogens. DIM is suppose to decrease the bad estrogen that causes BC but increase the good estrogen that we need for virtually every other vital organ. Most conventional docs don't buy this theory but I do! I did tons of research on it. The truth is most MOs know very little about female hormones. IMO there should be an endocrinologist or at least a gynecologist on the BC team. I also believe we should be having our hormone levels checked before, during and after anti hormone therapy but most conventional docs don't do that either. Good luck to all navigating this complicated disease.

Dtad, I have read similar, but had trouble tracking down exactly what was meant by "good" and "bad" estrogen and how those were measured etc. Since you have done the research, do you have any links or other info on this point?
-
What is the recommended dose
-
Yes, any pertinent links or references would be much appreciated.
Hope- I hope you get the info you’re looking for. I too am interested in the viability of DIM.
-
I am not on an aromatase inhibitor but I did see an article about taking DIM with Tamoxifen. I take DIM after I had surgery and radiation for DCIS. For some reason I was not allowed to post the link, maybe since I'm a new member here?
