    TwoHobbies - Ice cream cheat....oh yeah! 15 year old post baby weight LOL!! It doesn't matter if it was recorded as an addendum on Moses's stone tablets (as it was in my case...actually I think they found my excess weight on cave drawings), the important thing is that we got to it...so yay us. :) To answer your question regarding paleo/UC. I started paleo/primal in sheer desperation to lose weight. Tried everything, nothing worked. I was diagnosed with UC 1 year before paleo & discoverd that the total remission was a delightful SE, and more!     Sorry,Map-I love PB too but it just scared me so I gave it up.

    Egads yes I would be interested in what you ate to start the journey with UC-if you had trouble with veg and fruit.

    SpecialK I understand the excitement and fear both of finding someone. The curiosity would kill me. It seems like yourfamily might have been more recent immigrants perhaps- guessing maybe they stayed in that region for a long time. Is Germany included in Western europe or northern? My grandmother was full german and yet our genes came up 90 percent Northern European, 3 percent southern european, 3 percent native american, 3 percent yakut.

    Ive been good again today-plain yogurt, blueberries and almonds for breakfast. Chicken wrapped in lettuce and iced black coffee for lunch. Lettuce wrapped chicken with tomato, cucumber and avocado for dinner plus watermelon and a LaCroix. Repetitive but it works.

    Losing weight is so hard. I am on my 5th day of rads and I got weighted. I am the same as when I started this whole process and I stopped eating bread, pasta and white rice 2 months ago. Since all the sacrifice I made didn't make any difference, I ate half of a chicken sandwich my son didn't want for lunch. I will have to start again tmrw. Uhggg

    Mimi - a body under stress (rads) tends to hold onto body fat, hang in there and keep it steady. When I get bad DOMS from lifting (muscles repairing) the same happens to me. The body can’t tell the diff between stress from rads, injury or even being stressed at work. It just knows it’s stressed and sends a signal to go into conservation mode. The important thing is you’re eating healthy. Keep an eye on the carb count as well.

    Hi kids. Thought I'd join in as I have lost 150 lbs. on a keto version of paleo. I started a few months before I was diagnosed in 2015 at 288 lbs, and hit my goal weight of 135 in April of 2017. Maintaining it over the last year has been pretty much effortless.

    I have a lot of great recipes and tips to share, and I love to talk about everything I have learned. I'm also a bit of a research junkie.

    Someone brought up coffee. I hadn't been a coffee drinker for many years, until I went on tamoxifen and found this:

    Now I drink all I want!

    Solfeo - Welcome....and man-oh-man am I glad you joined us! 288 to 135 makes you a Paleo Master! I have to agree that maintaining is effortless. The thing that hooked me was never being hungry and never counting calories. Did you follow any particular program or person? I'm a huge fan of Mark Sisson & Robb Wolfe. I posted an article on coffee (waaaay back in the thread) that showed it not only for BC, but colorectal cancer and moderate reduction "at any site".     WORKOUT WEDNESDAY.....Yes, I can hear the boo'ing from here!

    Exercise…..striking dread & fear into the hearts of humans from the beginning of time! We know it's good for us but most of us tend to run screaming from it. Let's face it, couch surfing holds more appeal. Here's the thing - an upwards of 40% reduction of reoccurance with a regular exercise program. That little ditty alone is what got my buttinsky into the gym. Exercise is another important aspect of the Paleo lifestyle. Starting with a good mix of low level cardio and body weight bearing exercises will do wonders for the mind/body/soul. The cornerstone of paleo exercise is to 'walk far and walk slow', so do as much of it as often as you can. No one needs to start by running marathons, however you just might find yourself crossing a finish line one day, trust me, exercise hooks you….very addictive given time.

    The thought of strength training can be daunting for beginners, especially where various health issues are a concern (LE, heart,knee, hip & back problems). To strengthen, tone and improve these issues you might consider a strength training program involving the lower body. Squats and lunges are custom made for these issues, not to mention that when done consistently you'll end up with a booty that will have you beating the boys back with a stick! Exercise newbies, below are some vids that show a slow easy start.Do your walking/cardio and then toss these in 2-3 times per week. Don't worry about the number of repetitions in the beginning. I'd rather see you do one right than 10 wrong.

    Thanks for the warm welcome ladies! I'm going to do something I've never done and show my "before" photo. I was literally so ashamed of my appearance I became a hermit and most people who know me IRL never even knew I had gotten so large, because I wouldn't go anywhere or see anyone. In the "after" pic you can see what I think is the truly remarkable thing about this diet, besides ridding you of hunger and cravings that have sabotaged every other diet in your life. It's anti-aging in a way (I believe from eliminating grains). You would think I would have a lot more loose skin after losing over 150 lbs. I definitely have some, but it could have been a lot worse and it is not noticeable at all in clothes.

    I do hope to inspire others, but what I usually run into is a lot of skepticism and excuses why this diet can't possibly work because it goes against more conventional diet advice. I have encountered outright hostility from others on these very boards, in fact. If you are sitting there thinking you are too far gone to ever make a comeback - trust me, people, if I could do it anyone can!

    Solfeo - WOW!!!! Look at you ya' gorgeous chick!!! Paleo never ceases to amaze me, and you're the poster-child-proof-in-the-pudding shining example of that. CON-GRATS! Now I'm going to have to dig out my before shot, not too many of them, I used to shy away from cameras. Even if I find a pic I'm going to hold back a bit on posting a before n' after...the well deserved floor is all yours. Shine baby shine! As for the hostility, I know it well. I don't know how many times I've had to jump to my own dietary defence saying "so, I cut wheat, grains, legumes, processed foods & sugar, and I'm eating unhealthy???" I let my blood work and scale prove my point. Fiber can be found in other places besides legumes & wheat and I don't eat sides of beef for crying out loud. Meh, no matter, you'll find no hostility here, just kudos and support/encouragement. Everyone is welcome, I even invited the vegetarians lol. Who cares if it's all for the common good.

    Thank you so much for posting such inspirational words and pics! Indeed IT WORKS, you showed that beautifully.

    Thanks so much, Egads! That is the only fat picture that exists. My brother was visiting and I couldn't avoid the camera. I literally cried when I saw it, because even though I was well aware of how much I weighed, your mind sort of blocks out how bad the situation is until you are forced to confront it in an objective way.

    Speaking of blood work, mine happens to be better than a teenager's. Strangely, this is not enough evidence for most people that there is nothing unhealthy about this diet:

    Blood lipids from last week. High cholesterol is a risk factor for breast cancer recurrence, and my particulars are perfect:

    My MO said my A1C (average blood glucose over previous three months) is the lowest she has ever seen in her career. High blood sugar is also a risk factor for recurrence. The EAG includes after meal spikes:

    Sof - All I get is a phone call from the doctor's office, I really have to start getting those copies. All I can say is that I'm told "your results were perfect"...previous to Paleo my levels looked like Bart Simpson's report card ugggggg. My PCP is all for this...my MO called it my 'crazy diet', that is until the test results started coming in.....she hasn't said it since. Take that MO! lol.

    Egads: I try to get to my "gym" class 5 days a week. Last night was upper body/arms, so tons of push ups and some hand held weight training.

    tonight, another low cardio. Each includes core work.. love it!! Once I started weight training, I loved it!! but we aren't really too hard core. but its effective.

    However, nutrional challenges pursist.. sigh... Hubby didn't want to make dinner last night. so , off to a restaurant we went. But, I wasn't horrible.. bacon blue burger, no bun.. no chips/fries, grilled squash (green and yellow) instead. water to drink... rest of the day was pretty normal..

    Thanks Map!

    Lunch today: Grass fed beef burger lettuce wraps with avocado, tomato, red onion and homemade healthy dairy-free ranch dressing. You can get a big box of the frozen Don Lee Farms Grass Fed Charbroiled Beef Patties for a reasonable price at Costco. They are pre-cooked and you can just pull one out of the freezer and heat it up for a quick meal when you are hungry, before you have time to make bad decisions. The burgers contain only all-natural grass-fed beef,organic onions, sea salt, organic garlic, organic pepper, and they are pretty tasty. I'll post the recipe for the ranch dressing later.

    Egads - my MO likes my keto/paleo diet, but my PCP hasn't really ever accepted it. She does keep her mouth shut about it now that she has not a single thing to complain about in terms of my health or labs. All of my doctors say I am their healthiest patient because it is true. The only med I take is tamoxifen.

    For exercise I wear a FitBit and get at least 10,000 steps most days. I also have an elliptical machine I try to use at least every other day for more cardio, and I workout with weights and resistance bands at least twice per week, and preferably three. I've managed to preserve muscle mass with this program even with the massive weight loss. I'm sure you've all seen the recent news about how important this is for us.

    You are so correct that physical fitness is addicting once you get over that initial hump. When I first started I couldn't even walk to the end of my block. I had a bad back, bad knees, bad ankles (all mostly resolved). It was hard work until I got to over 7500 steps per day, but then the endorphins started to kick in and now I miss it a lot when I can't walk. I work at home and take frequent breaks to walk between tasks, which really helps to keep my metabolism fired up. I have more energy than I did when I was 30.

    The first step to regaining your health is to believe it can be achieved. Start slowly, and build up, and before you know it you'll be walking everywhere you go, and liking it!

    Map - Very cool! You have a nice mix of weight & cardio going on. Do you have any problem with push ups? I do them religiously along with pull ups, but notice a strange sensation in my armpit/breast scar areas. I do get a touch of LE on my side, but it's not a problem as it goes away on its own within a few hours. You did really good at the restaurant, kudos on the choices! What I get from restaurant food, no matter how well I choose, is a mountain of salt....why do they do that??? I'm up half the night drinking gallons of water, then the other half peeing!

    Sof - Nice pics! Great suggestions! Paleo can be as convenient as any other meal prep. Your foray into exercise mirrors mine. I couldn't make half a block in the beginning. Once I got a taste of results, and those lovely endorphins, I was hooked. Starting a regime can feel like torture, pushing through will hand folks an emotional/physical gold medal....oh and a nice booty :)))

    I did my usual yesterday, I combine 50-60 mins weights & 30-40 mins of cardio, laced with plenty o' HITT. Sccccchweaty! :)

    Ok, where are the rest of us?? Sas? Junie? Cape? Mimi? Meg? Two? Shazza?....and anyone else I missed!! Honest, we're paleo, but won't pull out clubs and chase you if you didn't exercise LOL. Come out, come out where ever you are....we just miss ya! :)))

    THROWBACK THURSDAY!!!

    For those of us that aren't social media savvy, throwback Thursday is the day of the week where one can reflect on their own personal 'back in the day' memories etc…. usually in the form of posting those embarrassing high school pics, complete with big hair, big acne, and big attitude.So why not a Paleo Throwback Thursday?I thought it might be fun to post memories of our pre-paleo days, The topic can be anything and everything, soup to nuts. My contribution is – Home Cookin'. I have very fond memories of my mother's recipes, many of them as far away from paleo as the earth is to the moon!

    Does anyone remember the Kraft recipe commercials? Yuck would be an understatement! The one that stands out in my mind, and thankfully one my Mum never made, was this concoction/contraption/coronaryinducing disaster:

    Imagine the stuffing is Kraft dinner, this is close enough, I couldn't find the original retro Kraft pic. Nothin' like a man coming home tired and hungry from the coal mines, to a steaming dish of hot dog surrounded Kraft dinner! Hun, you're a peach!

    Egads - I had a really bad night on Monday/Tuesday into Wednesday. I was so tired and SOB that I used my power wheelchair to get Kirby to the groomers.

    Today I am at the hospital in Portland for a bone scan w/ spec CT. So I won't be home until this evening. I had to get up at 3:45 a.m. to catch my ride at 5.00 a.m. I'll probably snuggle with my pillow when I get home.

    Egads - If moms weren't trying trying to kill us (unintentionally of course), our schools were, with ridiculous "balanced" crap lunches like this. I know, what am I complaining about? All of the "food groups" are represented, so it must have been good for us!

    Well, I'm 3 for 3 at the gym this week!!! YAY ME!!! Cardio last night was a beast... I love the trainer, but man, I had a rough time last night! My stamina is still way lacking from pre-diagnosis... I actually sat down for a few minutes to catch my breath. (chest was getting just slightly tight.. more on that later)

    I do push ups on my knees with an occasional full one thrown in. I had 3 nodes removed during my surgery, (all clean! WOO HOO) but according to my drs. my range of motion is practically normal. I feel a tug now and then, like I've overstretched or pulled something but it doesn't really hamper too much. more just a reminder that I had the surgery.. sigh... Could be the same that you are experiencing.. Also, even though my port is gone, its still weird when I do my arm stretch, (you know, the one when you cross your arm across your chest and pull with the other one??)) Its almost like I still feel it there. I don't think i have much lymphodema...

    tonight is leg night. Can you say Squat Goals?? But for all my great exercise, I had a Au Bon Pain salad today that came with the dreaded piece of whole grain bread... sorry, couldn't resist... but its Carb day, so even though its wheat, its a carb?? :) And yes, I had protein, (turkey)

    During most of my treatment and for a long time after I was done, I often had a heaviness in my chest.. like someone was sitting on it. Drs kind of downplayed it, but was wondering if anyone else ever felt that. It wasn't painful, it wasn't debilitating, but noticeable.

    I am very grateful for what seems to be my physical strength. I credit my Max program and all the work that I did for that year prior to my diagnosis. I truly believe that is what helped me handle treatment better than most.

    EGADS!! That is sooooo gross!!! Thank God my mother never bought into any that stuff... The very rare "tv dinner" was actually a treat... but mostly, mom cooked everynight, meat, starch, vege.... nothing processed. Thursday was pizza, cuz Dad got paid! lol (Today, I can barely eat it)

    My husband remembers, "spam casserole" and fried balogna sandwiches.. (ew)

    There is a scientific reason why wheat bread is so hard to resist. There is actually a protein in wheat called gliadin, that when broken down binds to the opiate receptors in our brains, and causes a real physical addiction, in a similar way to heroin. One mechanism by which the weight loss drug Contrave functions, is that it contains an opiate-blocking drug called naltrexone. Naltrexone is given to addicts to block the effects of opioids and keep them on the wagon. You can take Contrave to "beat" the wheat addiction, or you can completely cure yourself by eliminating wheat entirely. Stop eating it and you simply stop craving it. I never look at a piece of bread anymore and think I just have to have it.

    Junie - Awwwww, that is a rough couple of days/nights! Hope the scan goes well and that you're snuggling n' snoozing as I write this. Any pics of Kirby? Sweet dreams!

    SOF - Omg, that's fruit cocktail!....I was raised on that stuff LOL!! Wasn't chocolate milk the 'hangover cure' of the 80s? The carb count on that tray must be what I take in monthly! Awesome throwback pic representing all the food groups....Mom's, bless em!

    Map - TV dinners were a treat in our home too, and I'm glad my Mum never bought into most of it too. I used to love TV dinners, and thought it was fine dining lol. The other thing I loved (and rarely got) were the little boxes of cereal. Cut, pour milk, eat. Pure kid stuff! My Mum loved Spam...being raised during WWII in Britian, it was a culinary staple.....blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh uggggg! Stuff makes me shiver.
