Nipples ....

I'm so glad to see the list of tattoo artists expanding. I had my nipples done 5+ years ago and am thrilled with the results. Unfortunately, there was not much information about available tattoo artists and I did not want to travel for my tats. I stayed local and had my PS recommended tattoo artist finish my reconstruction. She was terrific, very professional, and half the cost of traveling to Maryland. I would encourage women to explore the talent in their own neighborhoods. As reconstruction becomes more popular and successful, more tattoo artist or micropigmentation specialists are being trained in the 3D techniques. Always look at samples of their work and read reviews. There is a lot of talent out there.

Can anyone tell me what the recovery is like for nipple recon + aerola tattoo? I'm thinking about waiting until after summer because I assume you can't go in the water for a while after the tattoo is done. Of course I'll ask my PS but I'm impatient for info and you all have so much to share!
-
My skin nipples took a couple of weeks to heal. The tattoos I could shower the next day but not scrub or let the shower hit full force.
I waited five months after the skin nipples before tattooing.
I schedule the nipples in October and tattoos in March so I could swim.
Your PS will know best.

Just finding this forum and I have a question for anyone who has had breast reduction on the non cancerous breast. Did you have nipple sensitivity? And if so for how long? And what did you use to help w it?
I posted this same question on another fourm bc I really don't know where to go w this.
After almost 9 years I had reduction on the side that did not have cancer. I'm 3 weeks out and healing well but the nipple is so sensitive I can hardly stand to have anything touching it. I've tried putting the nursing pads in my bra bc they are soft, I've tried the round cotton pads used to remove make up. Both are painful whenever I move around. Now I'm trying gel pads but they stick on and I worry my nipple needs air. Ideas??
Saw my PS and I have no infection, says it's normal nerves reconnecting or something like that. But I need help now. Thinking breast shields might help, has anyone had this problem? Or tried any of these things?
I also had nipple reconstruction at the same time so I appreciate all the info on getting on this forum. Thank you!
Resting...but not so well at the moment 😏

I had bmx with nipple sparing reconstruction last week and saw the PS for a follow up today. The right side looks good, the left side isn't doing as well. He said there's a 50/50 chance the nipple or some surrounding skin will become necrotic and there's not much I can do about it except pray. This was the side I had a lumpectomy on in February so I wonder if blood flow was compromised from that. Anyone have suggestions for helping the left side succeed?
-
Readyabout, no advice unfortunately. I wish you the best! I lost my right nipple. I'm getting used to the scar, hoping to get tattoos soon.

ReadyAbout and Resting
My nipple reconstruction was uneventful. I have feeling and sensitivity without pain. Sorry, I don't have more to offer.
Try asking the Moderators if they know of a forum or articles.

Hi! My PS told me I have the option to do nipple reconstruction in about a month or to wait until September. What do you all think? Summer is coming fast and he said the thing you wear to protect the constructed nipple would probably show under light summer clothes. Did anyone do it in the summer?
-
I waited to the fall. I wanted to swim and not take any time off.

I did mine in December but it healed quite quickly. I would wait until fall . Personally if I hadn't done nipple recon I could have worn tanks with no bra all summer. The downside is that I have to wear lined bras all the time or it looks like I have headlights and they are very noticeable. Instead I might have done vinnie tattoos had I known about the headlight issue. Also be really thoughtful about where the surgeon or tatoo artist puts the nipple. Make sure it is where you want it because as you probably already noticed we can't squish and bounce reconstruction like normal breast tissue. My ps centered mine but my right one would look better if it were a centimeter to the left.
-
for those getting prosthetic nipples did insurance cover them? Glad you are happy with your results everyone
-
Thanks Coach Vicky and Exercise Guru, if I wasn't sure before, now I think I'll definitely wait until the fall. I'll also talk to my PS about the "headlight" issue...in my case it would look even funnier, since it would only be on one. Yikes!
-
I'm just starting to think about the nipple conundrum. I did not have nipple sparing on my initial mx and will go in for a prophylactic mx this fall. What to do about the nipple? I definitely want a match on both sides, where possible, so I was thinking of going android without any nipples on either side. Then it occurred to me that there will probably be occasions where I might have to be topless in public (european spas) - that will only draw attention to me (not like the huge scar across the boob won't already). I don't want headlight effect, I want tee shirt boobs. Any suggestions?
-
Without nipples, I never got my size in my head. I just feel complete now.
May be different for others.
Skin nipples will flatten after a while. Mine are not 100% perfect and that makes them real looking to me.
Coach Vicky
-
Amelia, I don’t think mine have a headlight effect. They’ve flattened out but still look real. But I always wear a bra anyway since my implants are so small. I need the extra padding!
-
Amelia, have you thought about nipple tattoos? (sorry if i'm late to the party and this has already been discussed) Vinnie seems to be "the guy" everyone uses for nipple tattoos. Here's his website. Plus I think you get street cred for having a tattoo artist named Vinnie. http://www.vinniemyersteam.com/
-
Amelia, first off your scar will fade to barely visible and you can use cica care sheets to help you get there. I'm 2 years post BMX and my scars are very faint...I had revision surgery in April and my PS gave me the CCS and only a month in and I can see the difference. Also, I agree with Vicky, it finishes the look and makes them look like a breast. Buuuuut my sister in law who is also a survivior never had nip recon or tats and she loves it. Def a personal decision...
-
I LOVE love LOVE my Vinnie Myers tattoos. Totally completed the picture for me. I feel DONE. It's so psychological; I swear even sex is better for me. LOL! Problem is I want to show everyone and that's not really cool.
My sister, on the other hand, has no nipples and will not get tattoos. And she's totally fine with that. So yeah, it's definitely a personal preference.
I'm actually going for one more fat grafting session - I have an odd roll of fat under my right arm; my PS said he can lipo it out and then use it to even out the area around the scar on the my left side. We decided to wait until the fall - so I won't have to recover in the summer and to give the last round of grafting more time to set in.
-
I'm so happy to hear how many of you feel "completed" and great with your Vinnie tattoos. He's got to be a really special guy to have a team with that kind of following. Very impressive.
Nipple reconstruction and aerola tattoo are included in the "pack" of services that my PS offers upon reconstruction. (The clinic also charges you for a 10-massage pass -- massages are performed post-surgery by specialised physical therapists to aid both in drainage issues as well as scarring and range of motion. They really have been worth it both post-mastectomy and post-reconstruction.)
I'm going to have to ask, though, to see some examples of the reconstruction tattoos that they're doing, and also check what kind of ink they're using, after hearing about how well they can turn out with specialised tattoo artists like Vinnie or others. I want to make sure I'm not overpaying for something I'm not going to be fully happy with.
And really I have this thread to thank for my education on the topic. I'm excited and informed thanks to this thread and you all sharing your experiences...a good combination.

Has anyone had their insurance reimburse them for the tattoos? My health insurance (BlueCross BlueShield) refuses to pay anything toward my tattoos because they were done by a tattoo artist, who is considered "out of network." However, we don't have any tattoo artists "in network" because only medical professionals are on our provider list. I would like to fight this, but I thought I'd see how other women handled this. Thanks!

My plastic surgeon had a tattoo artist come in but she only used medically approved pigments so they fade over time and are not anything like Vinnie's my insurance covered that
-
Beyond that I have to pay cash
Also it really helps if you have before pictures to.match the pigment you want

what is a price range to have 3-D tattoos
-
Bella, I paid $600

Thanks

I paid $800 at Vinnie's. I had a referral from my insurance company before going. The referral was for "durable medical equipment", I kid you not.
Research this for background for your insurance:
The 1998 Federal Breast Reconstruction Law mandates that insurance cover the breast (s) to be reconstructed to their original shape, size and
appearance, thus the reason tattooing is considered medically necessary for this patient. The codes and description for my tattoos were:
Service: (entered twice) Areola / Nipple Micropigmentation Code: CPT 11921RT and CPT 11922LT (Maybe that is for the right and the left, I don't know.)
Service: Personal History Breast Cancer Code: Z85.3
Absence: of Bilateral Breast Code: Z90.13
I have filed a claim with my insurance. To date they have not paid. It take up to 6 weeks to get reimbursed. It has been about 8 weeks.
Best wishes. I hope this helps.

This is such good information for all of us! Any other women out there care to share what they paid?
I'm set to pay about $500 for the tattoo with medical grade ink, but seeing your price for Vinny's tattoos, CoachVicky, I think I want to double check before I pay it because it might be worth it to wait!
P.S. Got to love that "durable medical equipment"!
-
Many thanks for all the pointers! I have to think about this.
Love the comments about "street creed with a tattoo artist named Vinnie" (ReadyAbout) and "wanting to show them to everyone!" (Jenwith4kids)
I've shown off my android foob to more people than I probably should have....
I wonder if my insurance will cover some nipple tattoos.
-
That is excellent info Coach Vicky. I am off to see my PS for stage 2 discussions
