Second Opinion?
Hello!
I am a brand new member. I am a 29 year female with a history of cancer in my family. My paternal grandmother has breast cancer, maternal grandmother is just riddled with cancer all over, and both grandfathers passed away from colon cancer. recently my GYN found 2 lumps at 3 and 6 o'clock on my left breast, they asked me if I drink caffeine (I only drink a small coffee once a week, other than that I stick to water and milk) and stated they thought these lumps were cysts.
I went for an ultrasound and the tech said I had very dense breast tissue so everything on the US was white, she barely found the larger lump and couldn't find the second one. I was then told that the radiologist couldn't see me at the moment to give me my results and was sent home to await a phone call. The tech then called me later and stated that the radiologist thinks they are mammory lymph nodes and to come back in six months.
I called my family doctor (which they only had the PA go over my results instead of my doctor) and my GYN to see if they could order an MRI or biopsy just to check and they stated that my insurance wouldn't cover it, I would like to go somewhere for a second opinion but don't know if Im being irrational?
I asked them if they were going to try to figure out if these are lymph nodes WHY ARE THEY SWOLLEN and they just said come back in six months for repeat US.
I have been fatigued since Christmas, I have told my husband several times in the past few months that I think Im getting sick because I would just not feel right, I have been getting extremely light headed at work and even told him I thought I was having blood pressure problems or something to cause the light headedness. Recently I was getting short of breath but I believe this is from anxiety over this whole ordeal.
Has anybody been diagnosed with lymph nodes and it ended up being cancer? Would you seek second opinion and if you ever did, did your insurance cover it?

How very odd. I would question the imaging facility/tech, because the "all white" issue relates to mammograms and dense breasts and not ultrasounds. The whole point of a breast ultrasound is that density is not the factor that it is with mammograms. Abnormal lymph nodes have a characteristic appearance on ultrasound. I'd get a copy of my report, because just because you can feel them doesn't necessarily mean they are enlarged or otherwise abnormal.
As to the fatigue, etc. Most women have not symptoms prior to diagnosis, so I would speak to my primary care doctor about that.

I just assumed the fatigue was from life in general... however with all of this going on I started thinking about how I have been feeling lately.
The lumps were never felt before, I go yearly for my exams. I did request copies of my results I just haven't received them yet.

Certainly you may want to get a second opinion if you feel that your situation is not being addressed properly. Lots of us have. As to whether the fatigue is related or an outlier, I don't know. Anxiety can cause lots of fatigue, aches, and pains. Most of us did not have other symptoms prior to being diagnosed. I think that's why it hits us out of the blue--usually there is nothing that tips us off that breast cancer is lurking.

it’s your life...get a second opinion if you are not completely satisfied. And why was the radiologist too busy to speak with you. I call BS on that. Treat us how we deserve to be treated

Hi Beatmon,
It seems like you and I are in the same boat with waiting for 6 months follow up and insurance authorization, etc. Have you had any blood test done? I have been told that I have a mass on ultrasound, had to do an mri with contrast. Mri recommended that I would need ultrasound guided biopsy. Anyways, if you hadn’t had any blood test done ask your doctor to test you for Ebstein Barr Virus. There is a link between ebv and breast cancer. I was tested positive for past exposure to the virus and that’s when my breast mass started. I have been feeling so fatigue and tired, too

Hi...I just read your story and wanted to check in and see how you are doing? I too have a family history of cancer, I found a lump and scheduled a apointment right away, my obgyn sent me to get a mammo but couldn’t see anything bc of my dense breast tissue so I had an u/s and they we’re able to see the lump. The dr came in and told me I need a biopsy. Im scared I go tomorrow and have to wait until next week to get the results:(. This i
