I was diagnosed last week with stage 1a IDC grade 2 but triple positive receptors. Had a lumpectomy last Friday no lymph node impacts. Waiting for surgery pathology report. I am 64 and reeling from this diagnosis. With the triple positive status it sounds like recurrence is more likely and chemo is probably route to go ? Since Tumor size under 1cm hearing chemo not recommended? Thoughts

Hi TTW, you are just about the age I was when I was diagnosed 9 years ago. I am triple positive and there are many new treatments for this. There is a wonderful thread here called Triple Positive Group and they are knowledgeable and kind. So come join us over on this thread. I'm running off to bed or I would post more right now.

Do they ever recommend herceptin without chemo? I suppose if your health was compromised and chemo was too much for you they would. I guess 1cm grade 2 with her2+ is still considered aggressive enough to warrant chemo. There is no oncodx test for her2+ but you could check into something called mammoprint and blueprint.

TTW--what worked for me was just to spend a lot of time here on BCO reading various threads, and particularly looking at individual's dx's and accompanying tx's. I knew what would be recommended for me before I ever met with an MO. Meow--I pushed back pretty hard on overtreatment. Did *hours* of research, including many PMs with very knowledgeable women on this site. One of my common questions was about getting Herceptin without the Taxol. I believe they work in tandem--there are some small studies on H alone, but not enough data to have that as a standard tx. In the end, I decided that while getting T+H assumes that there are still cancer cells in my body, I came to think of it as an insurance policy. I also believe that it would have been a little like living with something always on my shoulder, particularly at the semi-annual mammos, if I hadn't decided to do the recommended tx. I do think it's heavy hitting for not much bump up in probabilities, but I am at peace with my decision.

Anyway. TTW--do your due diligence. This is very much about processing information and arriving at a decision you can be at peace with.
