Neoadjuvant chemo could induce metastasis

Hi everyone

I recently came across this article and am very concerned. I received AC&T neoadjuvant chemo and it seems that this combination, while killing some cancer also aids in its dissemination leading to metastasis. If nothing else, this should be a topic of discussion with onc, for people considering neoadjuvant chemo.

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy induces breast cancer metastasis through a TMEM-mediated mechanism

This study was done on mice, not humans. I am sure multiple larger studies - on humans - were done prior to neoadjuvant chemo becoming standard of care.

Interesting, although almost indecipherable, morning read with my coffee! Yeah, I'm not rushing out to increase my life insurance based on this. I had neoadjuvant TAC, which is AC-T but given concurrently.

Treatment standards change slowly over time, as many large, human studies lead to enhanced knowledge of cancer's vulnerabilities. This particular study may lead to something eventually...or it may just indicate that in a few mice, this particular biochemical reaction occurred with their particular and artificially induced cancer.

Don't devote any more brain cells to worrying about it. Not worth it, IMHO. SB

This study has been discussed on BCO in one of the threads before...last year i think. No evidence of this is human studies to date. The thing about mice is that they’re not human. Their bodies have many of the same organs but some are different (like the parathyroid/thyroid.) Their bodies work similarly but not exactly like ours. Did you know we’ve cured type 1 diabetes in mice 10+ times but when put to the test with humans we do not get the same response. We test in mice because they are abundant and similar. They are a good starting point to determine if human trials would be beneficial.

does not kill cancer stem cells either

would still not change my treatment history though, but I understand your concerns.

Like sbelizabeth, I also received neoadjuvant TAC (with taxotere) back in 2004. I had no choice since I was completely inoperable at diagnosis. I can't speak for the mice in this study but so far I am NED over 14 years out.

hugs to you... wobbly days are ok. The concerns and fears are part of all this too.
