Bella, I felt the same way about the fats when I started a Paleo lifestyle. All that fat felt counter intuitive and I was convinced I would end up having a coronary. So much so that I scheduled an appt with my PCP to discuss. He wholeheartedly encouraged it and threw me a few facts about oils and fats that might clear some of the fears up. When you consume veg, corn or canola oils etc (unhealthy fats) your body adsorbs approx 80%, while in the case of olive, avacado, coconut oil, animal fat (healthy fats) only 10% is absorbed. Add that to a low carb, simple sugar free, real food diet and weight will fall off effortlessly. My diet most days consists of 45-50% healthy fats. I haven’t counted calories in 3 years, lost 56 lbs, and my blood labs are excellent. The key is what you’re eating with the fats. Proper protein levels and complex carbs keep it all in check. A constant ketogenic state isn’t necessary, for weight loss, nor necessarily healthy. I ‘recarb’ monthly, and feel better for it, as I do with occasional fasts. If I’m hungry or low on fat at the end of the day I think nothing of taking a heaping tablespoon of virgin coconut oil. It’s yummy too!

I add MCT oil to a cup of coffee in the morning and I eat a small serving of full fat Greek yogurt to have something to take medicine in the morning. Certain nuts are good for fat if you like them, such as pecans and macadamias. I love avocados with just a sprinkle of salt. They’re grown locally and fresh/in season fruit tastes the best. My doctors didn’t approve of this diet but as long as I’m healthy they’ll go along with it, and isn’t healthy what we want?

Bella - sorry for the late reply! I re-carb if I’m feeling dragged out for more than a week and know it’s not me coming down with a flu or anything else obvious. I should clarify that this doesn’t happen every single month...more so in the winter months. I generally opt for a starchy root veg such as white potatoes (first choice is usually sweet potatoes, but don’t carry the same carb kick). I might also bake up some paleo treats that includes honey. Long story short I take my carbs to approx 100-125 per day for one or two days. It does the trick every time.

Wandering - I could never understand how a doctor could have a problem with dropping sugar, wheat, legumes, processed foods etc from our tables. Fiber can be plentiful in so many vegetables, which negates the legume issue. I think it’s the constant state of ketosis that is at the heart of the dictor’s issues, and actually why I went Paleo/primal. I fast occasionally but would worry about my kidneys under long term ketosis. It doesn’t sit right with me (just my take). I think they also are under the impression that we’re eating bbq’d side of fatty beef every day. Although there are days I feel like polishing off one! Yes, healthy is what counts. Your doc might change his mind after seeing your next blood work
