Sell me on Evista/Raloxifene for high risk of bc

For conditions such as LCIS and ADH, why would Evista/Raloxifene be a good choice. I know you must be past menopause. I also am posting a similar question on the High Risk forum.
-
I wish I could take it because it apparently is really well tolerated by most women plus it is good for your bone density. I had a pulmonary embolism when I had another cancer, so I can't take it because there is a small clotting risk with it. I have been offered Aromasin, but it has more side effects
-
Thank you Melissa. Right, good for the bones, which is its original purpose. Hope Aromasin works for you; it is more effective in reducing the risk of bc than Raloxifene.

I know it is more effective, but it also gets complicated for me, in that it can raise serum lipids and I am trying to avoid taking meds for cholesterol. I had massive ascites a few years ago and I really don't want to take meds that often don't play nice with your liver. I also don't want to lose bone density and have to go on yet another med for that

Lea, I’ve been taking raloxifene for 3 1/2 years so far, few (but tolerable) side effects. You could give it a try and see how you react- you can always stop if it proves problematic. For me, this seemed like the best choice since I didn’t want to take tamoxifen (previous problems with endometrial hyperplasia) or an AI (already have osteopenia).
-
Your choice makes sense MelissaDallas. Momoschki, thanks for your comments. Endometrial hyperplasia would also be an issue for me.

I've been taking evista for 2 1/2 years - doing great - few side effects. Had follow up eye doctor appt last week and he found a large blood clot in right eye - Branched Retinal Vein Occlusion with large heme. It's occurred in the last 3 months. He said medically my eyes are great - the blood clot is systemic. It has not affected my vision yet but I need to be followed closely to see if it grows or changes. It is should potentially serious. I also have osteoporosis. Even so I've stopped evista because blood clots in lungs, legs and eyes are side effects. Just wanted to pass this on. I never expected this to happen.

Thanks for the info Franki. Sorry for what you are going through. I hope the blood clot in your eye dissipates, if that is a possibility.

Hi,
I'm coming in on this a couple of days late. I am trying to find something other than Tamoxifen. Would you mind telling me what your side effects were for Evista?
-
sugarcane, I’ve been taking Evista for almost 4 years with few side effects: I have some insomnia and hot flashes, but then I experienced this already before I started taking it. Worth it for me vonsideribg the extra protection it affords.
