I have myMRI guided biopsy scheduled for Monday. When I checked on my appointment online it said that there would be a post biopsy mammogram. Is this normal? Seems strange to squish your breast right after biopsy. Plus nothing was seen on the biopsy in the first place. So confused.

They check to verify the marker at the site of the biopsy is located/placed. There is also usually imaging of the removed biopsy sample(s) to verify/count calcifications.

Oh, you so much for answering! I guess I figured they would see the marker in the final MRI view but maybe they don’t do that.

My mri (2mos after biopsy) report said it was difficult to visualize the marker which imo is a nice way of saying they couldn't find it.

Oh dear! I read that markers put in during mri guided biopsies sometimes can’t be found. At this point I’m just ready to remove everything.

They don't put you back in the MRI after they biopsy and place the marker. At least they didn't with mine. Once the bleeding (sort of) stopped they did the mammogram to check clip/marker placement then they glued me up.

From my experience the post biopsy mammo is a much more gentle compression than the regular vise grip mammo.

so I had mri guided biopsy and they did not do mammo after. The center that did the mri didn’t even have a mammogram machine (the mammogram machines are 2 blocks away at the breast center.) so it might just depend on the setup of where you’re having the mri.

Yes, the after mammo is to check on the markers. I had an mri guided biopsy for a shadow that showed up during diagnosis. They placed the markers (for the actual tumour) via US immediately after the MRI biopsy and then mammogram to check the tumour placement. By that point my breast was so frozen up I wouldn’t have felt a flame on it. I was scared before but found themental exhaustion was worse than all the procedures. You’ll be finished before you know it. I’m hoping everything goes smoothly for you on Monday, let us know how it goes!

Thank you so much everyone for responding. This has been a somewhat stressful six weeks or so. Actually I should say the first two weeks were very stressful. Since then I have calmed down somewhat, lol! I have lurked in this forum for a while and am struck by how kind and thoughtful andsupportive everyone is. I will let you know the results when I have them. ❤️

I had an ultrasound where they did a needle guided biopsy of ONLY 1 of my 3 tumors. They chose the tumor that was largest and also with calcification seen on mammogram. I could watch. It was fairly painful but interesting. It left me very sore. They installed a clip to show where tumor was. The others close by. Mine was a 2.1 cm, 1.9, and 1.7. They got me ready a few days later for an MRI mostly to determine size and locaction and if they could do a lumpectomy. I tried but could not stand it. I am extremely claustrophobic. I had a mx and lymph node dissection. It has been 4 weeks. Currently I am going to PT. This is my second breast cancer occurrence.

I am so sorry you have to go through this again! I am also very claustrophobic but had oralsedation for the MRI last week. The sedation and lots of prayers got me through. Hoping that works this time too. Praying for the best for you.
