Taxol and nails

I'm only on Taxol 6 but wanted to share what I was told about nails and Taxol treatments by the oncology spa operators (my clinic has a day spa with specially trained personnel).

I wasn't seeing any nail damage on myself but the beginnings of it was pointed out to me along so they gave me many tips to help prevent nail beds from lifting.

Taxol deposits itself at the nail - and that is why they tend to darken and the keratin build up under the nail doesn't slough off so the cells build up thus pushing the nail off (does not happen to everyone).

How to remedy or prevent: keep nails (and toenails!) hydrated. The first signs of dehydration are raised ridges. Use a 5% urea based cream and massage in every day (and really slather on and put socks on or hand mitts).

Another sign of Taxol taking its toll is inflammation on the fingertips (tender and pink are signs). Wear gloves when doing dishes and again, hydration is important.

The oncology center is fine with using nail polish (I had read elsewhere that OPI original nail strengthener is protective) but best choose a lesser chemically ladened brand (many options if you www it -Butter of London and Chanel come to mind)

There were no comments from them about using black nail polish other than it is impossible then to see the darkening, it is not preventative of damage in any way.

Manicures and pedicures are fine but they are against using water baths (too much potential for bad bacteria), they use the hand cream and plastic gloves plus mitts for softening. All utensils needs to be sterilized and avoid cutting the cuticles, just have them gently pushed down - prevent risk of infection.

If anyone has any other tips to share, please do so!

There is some evidence (I believe there is an article about this on this very site) that icing your hands and feet during Taxol infusion will protect your nails. I did this with thermal lunch bags filled with ice and I had no problems at all with my nails. It may also help prevent neuropathy from Taxol. I did get some neuropathy in my dominant hand (causing my MO to stop my Taxol at 8 treatments) and I think it was because I would remove that hand from the ice to do things like ice my mouth against sores, fiddle with the iPod, etc. Wasn't thinking about it but should have used other hand!
