Hey everyone! Sorry if this post is long! I've seen a few posts about breast indentation but I couldn't find anything that may be causing what I'm experiencing. A little background history, I'm 34 years old and had two children, ages 3 1/2 and 10 months. To say I'm terrified is an understatement because all I keep seeing is scary stuff on the internet and I can't stand the thought of leaving my babies behind. So back to my reason for being here. Monday evening while getting undressed to get in the shower, I was taking my hair down and noticed my areola under my nipple, about 6 o'clock, looked indented. I immediately called my mom and had her come and see what she thought. She thought it was strange but told me to give it until the morning and if it didn't look better to call my midwife. Well, I panicked and texted my midwife who is a friend and she told me to come in the next morning and be seen. She saw the indention, felt around and didn't feel any lumps, but sent me for an ultrasound. I had the ultrasound yesterday, which the technichian only went around my areola and nipple, and nowhere else, and told me the radiologist didn't see anything but wanted to do bilateral mammograms. I went right after the ultrasound to the mammograms and they were also clear and no signs of a mass that would cause the indentation. I know I should be happy about the results but I'm still scared! What is causing the indentation and why is no one concerned about it? I do have burning pain in my breast and aching from myarmpit to elbow at times and am not sure if that has something to do with it or not. Should I go Monday to see someone else or am I being paranoid? Also, would inflammatory breast cancer present as an indentation first? I don't have a rash or redness.

I also might add that my mammogram said scattered fibroglandular densities. Which I'm guessing is the density of my breast tissue. Anyone know what that means?

Mandyhiero i would suggest you have an MRI. If a young person as yourself have an issue, then of course with very dense breasts, which means that it shows as if you have tonz of white things on your breast and lesions tend to be white on mamos, so it's hard to diferentiate. That's why they say that for younger ppl ( who almost always have dense breasts) mamos are not so good, first make sure it was a 3Dmamo, an Ultra sound could detect certain things but not others, MRI is the choice imaging. I don't know where you live, but I would suggest that you go to a Breast Imaging Center, not one that does all kind of images, so hopefully at the Breast Center you will get Radiologist that only looks at breasts. No, to have an indentation out of the blue is not an everyday situation. So see if you could get this through. Take a picture even, in case it moves back for some odd reason. Please let us know. You did very smart to act on it immediately. Don't give up.

Thank you for your response, momallthetime. I actually did go to a breast center, so that made me feel a little better. And my report said scattered fibroglandular densities, which I've since discovered is one of the best types of breast to have I guess. But after continuing to have pain all weekend and still having the indentation, I feel more scared than ever. My mom and husband think I'm crazy bc both tests came back clear and they think I should be ecstatic with that news, but I told them that it doesn't always show on mammo and u/s. I told them about inflammatory breast cancer too, to which they thought I was even crazier for thinking. It almost feels as if I have a mild razor rash that comes and goes on my breast but I don't have a rash or any redness to speak of. I want to go to my primary care doc today but I don't want her to think I'm being crazy too. I even looked up the possibility of having a thermographic testing done but there's no places remotely near that does them for me to go to. I just don't know what to do but I do think I'll will go see my PCP today and have a talk with her and see what she thinks and mention the MRI. I'll let you know what she says.

3 D mamo or MRI should follow these tests. Perhaps some regular follow up too if tests are still negative and symptoms persist. One of the cancers, ILC, doesn't show up well in imaging.

Better be safe than sorry. Even if it turns out to be the worst, the fact that you'll get it it early will make a huge difference. Best wishes with the outcome!

Thank you, DATNY!! I called to get in with my PCP today but she's out on vacation. I'm calling around trying to get into another provider though because I can't take the worrying and wondering anymore. I have two small girls that need me and I can't function like this. I'll let you all know what I find out.

Hi ladies! I just got back from seeing a new primary care doctor and she did a very thorough breast exam of both breasts and said everything felt very normal. She also examined the area where I have the indentation and said where I have larger breasts that ligaments are to blame. She said she's seen dimpling and what she saw doesn't look concerning. She looked up the results of the mammogram and said it was a diagnostic mammogram and was happy with that but said if I felt that it needed to be looked into further to never be afraid to come back in and she would order more imaging. I go back in 6 weeks to follow up. Thank guy all for your advice. I appreciate you!
