Hot yoga with many nodes removed?

Does anyone who has had many nodes removed (I had 18 taken out in right side) do hot yoga or hot Pilates? Prior to my dx hot Pilates and hot yoga were my favorite classes to take and I'd take four or five a week. I was at my peak fitness level during that time. My lymphedema specialist says no way and I've read the guidelines saying avoid hot classes. I just want to see if anyone has done them and how they've faired. I have not shown any signs of lymphedema and see the lymphedema doctor every four months just for measurements and precaution. I have sleeves and gauntlets to wear during exercise.

After my year from hell I've thrown all I could at my cancer, given up all sugar and alcohol, am on tail end of six weeks at home iv antibiotics due to port infection, sepsis and blood clots....when my picc line comes out in 11 days I'm thinking of saying just go back to the exercises that I loved and take the risk. I'm miserable with all I've felt I've given up and lost. So if anyone can share if they've had experience with hot classes post lymph node removal I'd appreciate it. Thank You so much!

Hi Leesa, I haven’t had as many nodes removed as you (11 in all), but I’ve been teaching yoga throughout this whole experience, and recently started taking a hot yoga class. So far I’ve had no issues with lymphedema at all - but that’s not to say I won’t at some point. Maybe I’m playing with fire, I don’t know. It feeds my soul and helps decrease my anxiety, so for me it’s a worthwhile trade-off. Sorry I can’t provide anymore feedback, but I do understand your need for a return to normalcy and peace.

I began practicing yoga several years prior to my diagnosis in 2012. I ignored the advice to avoid plank and downward dog. I did end up developing very mild lymphedema a couple of years ago. It was, however, triggered by a cat scratch and not my yoga practice. I don't wear a sleeve because I couldn't tolerate it due to neuropathy. I continue to do plank and downward dog, but occasionally back off if my arm starts to feel achy. I do not regularly attend hot yoga classes, but i did last week and had no problem with it. As we say in yoga, listen to your body and you should be fine.

Thank You NancyHB and Balance so much for your experiences! I think I am going to give it a whirl. I'm glad to hear others have at least tried it and it hasn't been so bad. I will definitely listen to my body. I'll start slow in regular classes and then see. I dropped my son off at a hot class this morning where I used to go and I wanted to cry watching him walk in as I miss it so much.

I only had 6 nodes removed, but I have been going to hot yoga for about 10 years (3.5 years past surgery/chemo/radiation) about 3 X per week. No issues.

I used to really enjoy hot yoga and I'm not sure if I'll return. But when I lived in a bigger city I remember there being more options, like super hot yoga and medium hot yoga. Sometimes the room was over 100 and some classes were just at 90-ish. So that might be something to look into??

Thank You readytorock! So glad to hear you haven't had issues. I'm going to take a chance.

Thanks shimmergal! The classes I took were usually 95-100 degrees. You could definitely tell the difference in temp. Like if there was a class before mine the room was always hotter. First class of day usually cooler.

    Hello

Does anyone has any experiences on doing hot yoga during radiation treatment? Is there any side effects on doing hot yoga?

My doctor said hot yoga will make my skin cracks once I am going to later weeks of radiation treatment. Should I stop it?

The studio I attend has temperature up to 105 and 40% humidity.

Any advise on this would be great!!!

    Regards,

If it were me, I would not do it. I would listen to my radiologist who has the experience with radiation. You don't know how your skin will react.

Sweating during Rads was not good for me, I got water blisters all over the radiated area. that was just from taking a walk and since I live in FL it was hot.

I don't know what you were told, but I was told not to do anything with temperature extremes that could increase the risk of developing lymphedema--hot tubs, saunas, hot yoga, extreme cold.

Hot yoga with radiated skin sounds prickly, itchy and uncomfortable!!
