Breast Ultrasound Question

I was wondering how long breast ultrasounds generally take? I had a mammogram and ultrasound for a good sized palpable lump and was surprised that the ultrasound was done in under 5 minutes. The only area that was looked at was where the lump was, is this normal? Thanks in advance.

    Absolutely normal, and I've never seen anyone comment here who didn't think theirs was "too short" or something

    Yes it’s normal. When I went for the first on my lump I don’t think I was in over 10 minutes, they concentrated pretty much on the lump only. My last US in febwas shorter and I had a number of cysts.

    I think the ultrasound is a very important test and some of us have felt we were short-changed for one reason or another. For some, we felt they did not "cover enough ground" on one breast, or felt they should have imaged both breasts, and for others, we felt the technical skill of the tech might have been better. Some had a radiologist actually do, not just report on, the images. Others only had a tech, and the radiologist read the images the tech produced. A lot of frustration can result. I was most impressed when djmammo said he sometimes asks the pt if they would like to scan for themselves their area of concern. I know I wanted to grab the wand out of the tech's hand, but my generation was taught to stay silent. I have had intravaginal ultrasounds before, and that tech is always very very thorough. With an assembly line of breasts rolling thru, the scanning could get quite repetitious for a tech.

    mine was pretty quick, about 5 minutes or so and the tech only focused on the area of the mass. I was fine with that as that was what I was expecting.

    I have dense breast tissue and get an US every year along with regular mammo. My US is always both breasts, and has never ever been fast. Even prior to the US tech finding the breast cancer (because my mammo was clear), they never were fast and always had a Dr return to go over my breasts. The Dr review was usually fast, until the last one where they found the cancer.

    my ultrasound was not fast.. at least half an hour and the doctor was called in to ultrasound as well. But I have very dense breasts and a number of areas of concern so it's harder to image. I believe that if you have less dense breasts and they are aware of the area of concern they only focus there and it shouldn't take too long. The mammogram usually directs the ultrasound.

    The whole point of ultrasound is that density is not an issue lke it is with mammogram
