Stephanie, I had osteoporosis when DX'd, so took Tamoxifen, instead of an AI. I also had an Oooph/hyst 8 yrs prior to my BC DX. The estrogen loss may have contributed to my OP, I guess. I take Calcium with Magnesium, Vit d3 and Vit k2. I have had bone loss progression anyway. Weight-bearing exercise is supposed to help also. Have you had your Vit D levels checked? Vit D helps your body absorb Calcium, as does Vit K2 according to what I have read. My MO has suggested Prolia injections, but I have dental issues also, so, have not had any. It's like a snowball going downhill!:). Best wishes.

Hi Stephanie and I love the Ferris Bueller reference. I had osteoporosis prior to BC so I'm on Fosomax as a weekly pill. Some people prefer the less frequent shot of Prolia but I'm staying with my current course for now. Oh, and I'm also on Tamoxifen rather than an AI.

Fosomax has had zero side effects for me, which is great. And I hear you on the difficulty getting motivated to exercise! I only manage walking up stairs every day at work; a 20-minute walk twice a week when I get home; and a one-hour exercise class once a week. But I hope now that the weather is nicer I will get out more. I also have five-pound weights I try to lift while watching TV since my doctor says it's better than nothing. :)

StephanieD, there is a prolia side effects thread, below.

    https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/120/topics/857839?page=1#post_5192332

also check out drugs.com in the prolia section ( uncontrolled self-reports)

I am on calcium and vit D and multivitsmins and minerals, now prolia every six months ( previously on bisphosphonates like fosamax, risedronate, zometa, for OP from steroids, which I also tolerated well, 11 years), and am now on AI with BC so we changed.

The every six month dose is for OP. The monthly dose is for mets to bone or aggressive disease.

Calcium, D, and exercize alone are not nearly enough for worsened OP, they are used in control groups when new drugs for OP are tested. Bisphosphonates also work, not just prolia, but my MO cited studies showing less spread to bone with prolia in addition to OP benefits.

Balance the uncommon risks of a drug ( must be together with calcium from diet or supplements, D to > 30,and exercize) vs the very real and common risk of doing next to nothing ( fractures in all too many)

    Hi StephanieD,

I am also 100% for hormones. I have been on Aromasin for nearly 10 months and bone density test I had this week showed I have some osteopenia already! I have done a lot of right things for my bone - calcium, D3, K2 weight-bearing exercises.... so now I need Zometa or Prolia might be the next step which I really don't want to have due to bad side effects, I have some dental problems too! I will definitely ask about Fosomax, looks like it has less side effects.

StephanieD, fosamax is also associated in very rare cases with osteonecrosis of the jaw and atypical femur fractures, and there is more experience with it , so there are more cases reported than with prolia but prolia might have greater bone mets prevention benefit

Finally saw my bone density report, I think I am not doing bad at all, just my spine is -1.1 and other places are still fine. I think I can wait longer to get prolia or zometa !
