Sweetpea, my expanders are under the muscle as well so sub-pectoral. I have nothing to compare it to but I guess it made recovery worse. I'm still hopeful the implant exchange won't be too bad. I'm so ready for this surgery already. Sleeping with these rock hard balls in my chest is getting real old.

Hello ladies just checking in. I had my exchange surgery yesterday and like everyone else, I feel really good today. They have gauze and tape over the incisions which itch and I am bruised at the donor site for the fat grafting but really it only feels like maybe I did a hard workout. Feels nothing like the BMX surgery! PS said I can take the gauze and tape off tomorrow for a shower, only have to wear a bra if I want to, can sleep on side if I can get comfortable and no drains! Only restriction is not to sleep on my stomach. I also cannot stop feeling myself up! They are already so soft compared to the TE's. Usually I am nauseated but this time besides the patch they added a couple anti nausea medications to the IV and had no trouble this time.
Star - Sorry to read about you having to go the TE route. I am sure though that your PS did that to achieve the best outcome.
Sweet_Pea - Only 3 more sleeps!. I too was anxious before this surgery and of courses the nurses were telling me this was suppose to be the fun part. I was excited to have the exchange, but it was being put under that always makes me nervous. Are you also going with the prophylactic? The 3 dog night song I mentioned was "Well I never been to Spain."
Well I never been to Spain
But I kinda like the music
Say the ladies are insane there
And they sure know how to use it
They don't abuse it
Never gonna lose it
I can't refuse it.I hope all the ladies that had surgery this week are recovering and letting someone take care of them this weekend and all that have surgery next week have a very good experience! (((((HUGS)))))

I had my exchange surgery with fat grafting on Wednesday. I wish I could say all is well but not feeling very good today. Nauseous most of the day although I did manage a shower. Very swollen up top and around my torso from lipo. And one strange symptom of facial numbness, particularly both my upper and lower lips. I had bloodwork done yesterday to rule out an electrolyte imbalance, all is fine there. So I guess I just wait and see what happens and hope the feeling comes back!
-
Jadalulu, hope you are feeling better today!
CbsDetour, glad to hear that things went well!
-
Jadalulu, I'm sorry you're not feeling so good. I hope it's gotten better today and let us know what happens with those facial symptoms and the rest!
CBsDetour, so happy things are going so well. You made me laugh out loud about feeling yourself up all the time. I hope I'm that excited, too. So I guess it doesn't hurt to touch them because of the lost sensation or something? Right now the though makes me cringe!
Star, how are you feeling?
My fellow April 24th-ers...tomorrow's the big day. I'm so anxious and excited at the same time. I feel like it's a big step towards a new normal. We're almost on our way!
What about the rest of you that had the surgery earlier on? How are you doing? If you're back at work, how is that going? Any tips for the rest of us?
-
I’m waiting to go into the OR today for the exchange surgery. So excited! I’ll post an update on how it goes once I’m awake enough.
-
Day 5 is thankfully going better, however the feeling in my lips has still not returned. I haven't taken any pain medication other than ibuprofen since Saturday so that is good. Still tired and very sore from the fat grafting, but otherwise doing well. My chest is swollen, not much pain. I have been wearing the post op bra religiously with the exception of last night where I changed into a more comfortable one that did not cut off my circulation. I woke up the night before with terrible muscle spasms which I think was the result of the tight bra band. I have also switched to spanx instead of the binder that I was sent home with. The implants are as advertised, large round doughnuts
I had Allergen 133 TE 15 inch diameter filled to 600cc, now I have Natrelle Inspira Cohesive SCF (smooth cohesive full)-650cc. I'm hoping to be no bigger than a D size, however time will tell. I am just happy to be at this point!
-
Jadalulu, glad things are getting better. Does your doctor have any idea why the lip numbness? My guess would be something anesthesia did when they intubated you. I've seen patients get abrasions or cuts in their lips from the tube. Either that or a reaction to the meds? Hope you get some good sleep and continue to heal.
-
Sweet Pea and others. I had the exchange done on my right side. I got the round gummy bear implant Sientra 440, and while the tissue expander looked like it was about the size of the left breast (that I still had at the time), this just doesn't look right. It's too small or too high or too flat or too something. Maybe it's the lack of a nipple. it's funny because the whole time I was telling my PS to make sure he didn't go too big.
I guess part of the problem is my postpartum body. I was diagnosed while pregnant and am only 5 months postpartium and just not happy with the belly pooch. I suppose that's one reason things don't look quite right, the proportions are off. I have a follow up with the PS tomorrow and will definitely ask him, but would love some advice for those who may have experienced something similar.
The left prophylactic mastectomy side is doing okay. If you recall, they weren't able to do immediate reconstruction due to poor blood flow, so there's a tissue expander there instead. The area looks less bruised, so i assume that's a good sign. I'm waiting to hear back from the radiation oncologist to determine if I have to wait until after radiation (May-July) before starting fills and doing the exchange.
When I left the hospital I was prescribed Vicodin, Valium, an antibiotic, and colace. Yesterday I tried Tylenol rather than Vicodin, and today I dropped the valium and added ibuprofen between Tylenol doses, to see if I can manage that way. It's been okay.
I was feeling pretty overwhelmed and frustrated. I can't hold my baby, can't drive, I have tons of help and it's driving me crazy. I am lucky to have so much support and it's not them, it's the situation. I hate being dependent and out of control. I was finally starting to feel better, but the prophylactic mastectomy has thrown me back into those vulnerable days, and I've had a couple big cries today. I just want my husband to be home and I want my space. I've retreated upstairs with the laptop and left the grandparents to deal with the kids for much of the day. I either want to be in charge or left alone. Not sure how to address these feelings.

I had my exchange at the end of March (29th) and am doing really well. I didn’t have fat grafting just the implants (325cc). I’m still trying to not overdo it. I feel really good tho. I go back to my PS May 15 to talk about tattooing. I’m kind of excited about that. Haven’t decided if I’ll do the nipple reconstruction yet. I am doing the tattooing for sure. I’m ready to LOOK “normal” again
-
TaRenee - So glad to hear you're doing well!
I met with both my breast surgeon and my plastic surgeon today for post-op visits. They were very pleased with the way the left (prophylactic mastectomy) side was healing, especially since there had been concerns about blood flow. I'm supposed to apply Aquaphor regularly to encourage healing. I did talk to my PS about the right (implant, no nipple) not looking quite right, but he also reminded me that there was no reason we couldn't make adjustments in the future. But it's best for me to get past radiation and past the post-partum phase. I think I'll take the next few months to eat healthy and be a bit more active. I think if I lose 10lbs, I'll look much more like myself and more proportionate. Larger boobs always make me look chubby and matronly, and I want to avoid that! When it's time to reconstruct the left, we can think about if the right needs revision. I still have my drain, so I'll need to go back next week, but I'm generally feeling better.
-
hi all. I’m two days out from exchange surgery. I’m just a little sore, but overall so much easier than mastectomy. I never thought I’d have 500 cc implants. In the office, they looked so big, but with the recommendation from PS after looking at my before pictures and after getting input from whippetmom, they really seem like the right size. They are still riding a little high and wide, but I’ve heard things will settle a lot. I hope so. I’m figuring out I’m not a very patient patient. Good luck to all of you
-
I had my implant exchange surgery this morning at 8 and was released from the hospital at 11. I have 2 drains again. He also put in the numbing exparel before closing and I had pectoral blocks placed pre-op. So I guess we'll see how it goes when that all wears off but already a million times better than the mastectomy. I'm so happy to have it all over with. My mobility seems the same as it was before so that's good. No nausea here either but I told them to hit me hard with the nausea meds so I got Ammend ( a magic pill) and a scopalamine patch.
I haven't taken a peek yet but at this point will do that later after a long nap. The PS told my husband it took about an hour so longer than I thought, but overall I'm on cloud 9 on how good I feel. (Again, could also be the drugs )
-
Nursepatient35 glad to hear that you are finished and at home resting. Overall this surgery has been much easier than the mastectomy, just be prepared to have a few not so good days which for me was on day 3 and 4. I am 7 days post op and feeling ok, still a little out of sorts. Very little pain, mostly just soreness and swelling making it a bit uncomfortable. I haven't taken any pain meds since day 3 only using advil when needed. Good days ahead, now if I could just figure out this lip numbness that would make me happy
-
Glad to hear that everyone is doing well!
Fortunately, no pain on my front...but a lot of itching. And this AM, it seems I developed a rash, all over my chest, below the incision site, shoulders and upper arms (but not on the breasts themselves!) I contacted my PS, and they said they think I may be experiencing an allergic reaction (ya think?!?!?) and recommended Benadryl. I also dumped the post-op bra--it is made of nylon and polyester--for a cotton one that closes up front, lest it was the bra that was causing the reaction. Assuming it doesn't get worse, I will hold off on panicking til I see my PS at my post-op meeting on Tues.
Oddly enough, when I examined myself a day after surgery, it seems there was some orange-colored stuff applied to the same areas where I am now experiencing a breakout. It took a while to wash it off. Anyone else have a similar experience?
-
Shadie, I have been experiencing the itchiness as well. It started right around the incision area and worked down about an inch. It started once the surgical glue started coming off and is now subsiding, about 10 days of going crazy. I did take my bra off for a couple of night to let things air out. I tried benadryl cream, pills, cortisone cream, etc., and it didn't really help. I had the same thing happen after the mastectomy as well. I go to PS tomorrow, after the problem goes away! I will mention it to him anyway. Very annoying.
-
Day 1 post-op and I'm a little sore. Nothing terrible or even close to how the mastectomy pain was. I do feel like they're smaller than with my TE's. It feels so light too. I think I got used to that lead heavy feeling with the TE's so now it feels like there's nothing there. The drains are annoying again but if they can come out next week, I can handle it. I feel pretty drained and sleepy though. I'm guessing it's the anesthesia lingering in my system. Good luck to everyone with their surgeries and healing.
-
4 days out from my exchange surgery, and I tried on one of my old bras. It’s been 15 months since I had one of these girls out of the closet. It fit!! My new boobs looked almost normal under a bra. Amazing. If the cancer just stays away, then all will be good.
-
So much to respond to! I've been away too many days!
@Shadie, just a thought: could the orange stuff be iodine they sometimes put on incisions to disinfect? It goes under the name Betadine here in Spain and has a characteristic orange stain. Very possible you're allergic to that but it seems there are a number of possible allergens. Have you had any luck finding out what it was?
I'm exactly one week out of surgery, and all is well except that I'm in more pain than two days after. I can't figure out if it's because I've overdone it or because yesterday I got my stitches out and it's somehow related. (It's on that side.) Has anyone had more soreness in the days following than right after? What did you chalk it up to?
I got my drain out yesterday, too! So today I was able to take my first full shower (except hair, too much reaching and for too long). That meant I had to put the tape over the incisions again. My right side looks a little funky (that's the exchange side), but my left side looks great (that's the healthy breast that got a lift and a small implant where breast tissue was removed). I think part of it's the lack of nipple, as someone else said above. But I, too, feel like if I can look normal in a bra, it's all good. And I'm not talking about this annoying surgical bra! We deserve pretty and comfy, well-fitting bras after this!
-
@SweetPee--glad that the drains are out! A full shower can make almost anything feel better!
Just saw my PS today for my post-op visit....he was pleased with his work
I think I look nearly what I looked like pre-surgery. There is a little bit of rippling, but not enough, at this point, to think about fat grafting. I found out that the orange stuff was chlorhexidine--it is not the same as betadine. And yes, a known side effect is a rash. It seems they were able to wash it off my breasts at the end of surgery, but not my other parts, which is where I got the rash. I took Claritin in the daytime and benadryl at night for a few days, and it essentially went away. Now, the glue they used at the incision sites is itching like crazy. Fortunately, the doctor says that I can now apply a little vaseline to the incisions before a shower, and let it wash off. Was also given the ok to start my range of motion exercises, and to sleep on my side!
-
I am 6 days out from my surgery and got my drains out today! That is the best feeling ever.
Sweetpea, yes I would say I feel more sore today than I did right after surgery. More of an ache maybe? I would say it's worse after I sleep when I'm laying flat. My doctor did say that should all get better so I guess for now everything is normal.
I go back to the doctor again next Friday so hopefully everything will remain on track.
Shadie, I'm glad they figured out what the rash is from. Here's to hoping everyone heals up nicely without any complications!
-
Shadie, I can't believe you can sleep on your side already! These are big strides, that's wonderful. And I'm so glad they figured out what the rash was from and you can slowly get back to normal getting the glue off, etc.
Nurse, congratulations on your drains! It's really so different, as you know. I feel so light. The first few hours I kept looking around for it and the tubes because I had already gotten so used to dealing with it!
What you say about sleeping flat might be why I was so sore yesterday. And yes, it's kind of an ache. I was sleeping inclined on a wedge and wrecking my back/lumbar region, and finally tried it with pillows (much lower). I think maybe the change produced the soreness. I went back to the wedge, modified in a different position last night (deciding back pain was more tolerable than the chest soreness) and it worked! I feel much better and I haven't even taken my painkiller yet.
Here's to our health
-
I was so envious of all you getting drains out so quickly, and realized this was mostly just for exchanges. I was lucky not to need a drain for my exchange side, but did need one on my prophylactic mx side. It's been two weeks, and I'm hoping that drain will come out tomorrow at my appointment.
Pain is manageable, but I'm still sleeping in a chair. I find lying down hurts, and I remember with the TE it's hard to find a comfortable position to sleep in. Every position hurts after a while until the fills start, and I will probably need to wait on those bc of radiation starting soon.
-
Just wanted to let everyone know about this new book released yesterday. I have read a few chapters and so far so good, I would suggest that everyone pick up a copy!
-
Thank you for the book suggestion, jadalulu. Looks interesting
Had a post op appointment today. The drain on the mx side is out! Woo! One more step toward feeling normal. I also think that the implant side looks pretty good/real/natural, so I'm feeling better and looking forward to things getting better with each step.
Still sad my PS is leaving, but I'll talk to him next week about the game plan for next steps and also find out if he'll still be practicing nearby.
Hope everyone is doing well.
-
Star, you got your drains out! I'm so happy for you!
Hey, did anyone have more pain the second week than the first after exchange surgery? that's been my situation and the PS said it was normal because at first the area is still a bit "asleep."
Now I'm two weeks out of surgery and still having pain, though. I'll ask the PS when I go in today, but anyone else still having pain? I admit it's mostly in my non-exchange breast where I had symmetry work done, but some pain is present in my exchange breast. Hmph.
-
I’ve barely remembered/noticed my exchange side, but I guess it’s bc the mastectomy side is just constantly uncomfortable.
Re: the drain
My mastectomy/TE side looks like a small boob now. I wondered if the ps had done a fill during surgery and had forgotten to tell me, tho that seemed unlikely bc of his blood flow concerns. Turns out it’s the fluid that would’ve gone out in the drain collecting behind my nipple. PS didn’t seem concerned, and google seems to suggest it’s not uncommon, but I can’t help help worrying. Apparently it will be reabsorbed by my body.Anyone else experienced this?
-
sweetpea,
Yes I am exactly 2 weeks out today and I was having pain yet. I did notice today though it seems a little less noticeable. Every once in a while I get a zinger that I have to rub and at night they hurt if I lie on my side or completely flat. My PS also did some pocket work on the medial side of my left and that side has bothered me more. My sites where the drains were at are also tender. Like I said though, I feel like in the last day it's gotten a hair better so hopefully yours does too. At first it was a little disheartening since it seemed like everyone breezed through this surgery. Of course it was way better than the mx, but maybe I was just expecting to recover right away. I don't know.
-
Nurse: so was I! I guess it just goes to show you that a surgery is a surgery and sometimes it takes a little while to get through it. I'm having more pain on my symmetry surgery side than my exchange side, and the surgeon said that it was to be expected, that there was a lot more work involved in that side. I'm thinking it might be what you all call "pocket work" since he had to basically construct a pocket for a new implant, but still not sure of the terms (we speak in Spanish, hahhhaha).
Star, I can totally imagine that the exchange side feels like nothing compared with the MX side. My exchange side feels much better than the other side and so I can see how some people *do* breeze through this. Not so for the rest of us, and especially for you with a MX on one side. Are you still getting help? I hope so. Just think, you're through the worst of it. I didn't have fluid to be reabsorbed, but they told me that it was what the body did right after the drain is taken out. Seems like your PS would have said if he were going to fill the expander a bit (mine did) given your radiation situation.
Sending healing thoughts and hugs to all of you! (And wishing I could take this hideous surgical bra off hahahhaha. 24/7 except for showers, of course!).
-
Hi ladies, just came across this thread. I will be having exchange surgery in a couple of months. Just curious as to what size you were pre mx and what size implants you ended up with? I was a 36b, if that, prior to surgery and I am looking to not go any larger, I’m happy with the little boobs! Just trying to have an idea of about what size and/or projection I may be looking at! Thanks for any insight!
