I had my 9th treatment on Friday and am beginning to get a bit pink. I have Wednesday off next week because they are working on the machine. I'm glad to have a little break although they add a day at the end. Most days I'm in and out of the hospital very quickly. Yesterday there was a delay so I was there for 2 hours. Ugh :(

    Good morning all,

What a strange week. First, the breathing thing wasn't going very well, so they switched me over to the other machine and prone position (will be much better). Then shortly after that I developed two strange new symptoms-- itchy, tingling hands and feet, and intense back and chest pain. Haven't figured out the hands and feet thing, but the back/chest pain completely threw me for a loop. I talked to both my oncologist and RO, and neither one felt it was related to chemo or radiation (I've only had two radiation treatments).

I finally called my internist, who immediately said that it sounded like a pinched nerve (which can wrap around the chest from back to front). Some stronger pain meds and muscle relaxant later, and I'm functional again. But my best guess is that lying stretched out with my arms over my head for so long (with tense muscles) might be at the root of this. Going to make sure that I'm well-medicated for the long appointment on Tuesday.

Hi April Ladies - congrats to everyone about to finish up, hang in there if you're in the middle, and deep breaths if you're just starting - it flies by!

Dodge - I'd be grumpy too if I went through a mastectomy and found the nodes after. Ugh. So glad though, about the Oncotype score. No chemo is good!!! And rads aren't that bad.

A heads-up for post-rads treatment: don't stop your skin care treatment. Eight days after boosts I had to revert back to generous amounts of Aquaphor due to the continued reddening/burning of my nipple post-rads. The entire nipple turned brown, swelled, began to peel. I reverted back to the smoother bra with a nursing pad inside, and lots of Aquaphor. This lets me moisturize the breast and wear normal clothes in public. It's really helping - no itching, and the brown skin is sloughing off inside the pad a little at a time. Thus far no need for any medicated treatment.

Reposting this photo of the smoother bra (no wires) and nursing pad I slide in - lifesaver during and post-rads for keeping nipple lubricated

I have opted to use cortisone 10 cream now.  Upper chest has started to break out and itch.  Only slightly red under my left one. Weird minor symptoms are happening away from the area being treated.  Nipple has looked funny but at this point it seems to recover really quickly.  I'm not quite halfway there, #14/30 will be today.  I really hope I can get out of this with just these minor issues.

On Sat. I was having some discomfort but I believe that is from the seroma I developed 3 weeks post op as I wasn't wearing enough support.  I must of missed the part to wear some real support even after you feel better.  Anyway I swelled up but the compression of wearing high impact sports bras helped greatly for the fluid to resolve on it's own. Upper chest that's irritated is where some of that prior swelling was, so maybe that's why it's the 1st place to break out.

I also feel like treated breast is shrinking.....LOL

11/20 completed this morning! The routine is totally routine now, and for that I am grateful. My breast is getting slightly pink, and I *also* feel like it's shrinking! I've had some slight itching, and my nipple is feeling the burn, but otherwise things are still feeling ok. Two weeks to go...I can do this. Good luck today, friends!

    Kaywrite, thanks for the suggestions!

I hope everyone enjoyed their two days off radiation...Monday, and here we go again! Today will be #4 for me.

I finished by 25 full breast treatments today and now only have my 5 boosts left. My skin got very red, itchy and sore over the past week. RO prescribed silver sufadine (or something like that) and just picked it up and slathered it all over. Hoping it helps. I had not yet had any pictures or drawings taken for the boosts yet so they are doing it all tomorrow along with the first boost treatment.

I am in the homestretch now. Hope everyone's treatments go smoothly this week.

I am going to go ahead and join the April group since my first two treatments will be in April. #1/20 done. I did have some "heavy" feeling in my affected breast about 2 hours post treatment. Mortin worked for the discomfort. I have some lotion with calendula cream that I am using. Hoping to stop some of the redness and itching. Any advanced info would be appreciated. Here's to getting this journey on down the road!!!!

Got through my third treatment, but first in the prone position. I just have to say that whoever designed the table you lie on certainly never tried it themselves. I would compare it to lying face down on a diving board with my arms and head out over the edge in front. The face "donut" hit me in the wrong place and I had to basically hold my head up off of it for 45 minutes straight. Will be using pain killers and a muscle relaxant tonight for sure. My GP thinks that I pinched a nerve the last time around.

    Welcome to radiation Bauer4!

Today was treatment #5 for me. My radiation treatment team usually takes two x-rays of me before they do my treatment, I found out today that every five days they do 4 x-rays before treatment! Seems like that should count toward my radiation treatments, right? LOL.

    So far so good...no discomfort.

13/19 complete! Fatigue is setting in--I'm kind of just turning off around 3pm. I met with the doc today and she said it's normal, I should just rest when I can but keep exercising. It's all temporary, I just tell myself. Already looking forward to the weekend off!

I finished number 9 today. My skin is a little pink but not too bad.

Princess - that sounds horrible! Hopefully they can do something to make that easier

#2 down. #18 to go!!! The Motrin I took yesterday worked on the achy feeling. Today I aimed to take it before the treatment and of course forgot. Generally around 2 hours after the "achy" feeling returns to the affected side. I don't have any other effects as it is still early. I am using a cream of Calendula every morning and evening. Hoping this works. I meet with my RO for the first time after starting treatment tomorrow. HUGS to all for continued strength and healing.

Good morning-hope all is well today in April/May radiation land.  I wish we had a queen to rule over us wave her magic wand and cure the fatigue!

I am 15 down, 15 to go.  10 more whole breast and 5 boosts.  Our bodies are doing their best to re grow the good cells that are being zapped.  Don't know what else to do except try to eat good, stay as active as possible, and hydrated.  Once I'm asleep at night a bomb could go off and I would never know it! LOL

Saw the RO on Monday he said I was doing good.  Learned that being prone the upper chest is normal to be the place he sees in his patients that breaks out first.  I'm hoping this will be all I have to deal with. Ok to use the cortisone there (its working wonderfully), and using Aloe every place else.

Thank you for letting me share my experience.  Best wishes to all for a great day!  Stay well.

Love the good updates, and many thanks for support that I'm finding here. I'm normally not such a wimp, but it seems like every step of this process has been challenging. For radiation, it's been itching in my hands, feet, and where stickers are placed, and pain in my spine causing a pinched nerve from having to lie still on the balance beam of the table. I'm taking muscle relaxants and benadryl to try to get through this. 3 down, 16 to go.

13 down, 6 to go! It's getting hot out, and I've been riding my bike, which means sweaty stickers sliding around. Fingers crossed they stay on well enough to get through this! I suppose I wouldn't be the first to lose a sticker, though...

So sorry about the pain, PrincessButtercup! That's the worst. 16 to go...I hope they go quickly. Mine have, once I got rolling. Sending good vibes!

Thanks, Okkate. I had to take my stickers off out of severe frustration last night. I just couldn't take the itchiness any longer. I must be allergic to everything-- Ibuprofin, Alleve, and lanolin, and I have asthma.

I've decided to speak up when treatment isn't going well or is painful. I already said no to the breath-holding system of supine position. There must be a way to treat patients who have my issues. They can just keep marking me up with sharpies every day.

18/30 done today and I'm officially red, itchy, and tender. This is despite faithfully applying calendula cream, Aquaphor, and Miaderm multiple times a day. I've now added hydrocortisone cream to my fancy skin regimen. Oh, add tired all the time also. I am not digging this.

Ok, whining done. I know this serves a purpose. I know I can get through this. I know I'm lucky I didn't need chemo. It could be worse.

Funny thing is, I feel ambivilant about finishing these treatments. What do i do then? Sure, I'll continue the Tamoxifen and I'll hopefully exchange these tissue expanders before Christmas. But then what? I'm a Doer. Right now I'm doing something.

    Anyone else feel this way?

hi all! I finished 11/28 today. So far it's going well except I've noticed a few small bumps on the top part of my radiated breast and my RO says it's very common there and likely the beginning of a small rash but so far no itching. I was told to put hydrocortisone on it if it does start to itch. My stickers have held up really well despite me putting on Aquaphor 2-3 times and fresh aloe. Wishing everyone a good rest of week — 2 More days and then we get a rest. Good vibes to all

I'm 11/25 today and definitely pink over the entire radiated area. So far no itching, swelling or pain. I apply Lubriderm four t9mes a day. That is what my oncologist recommended.

LiMa66 - I know what you mean about being ambivalent about finishing treatments. It does feel good to be doing something concrete.

    Hi PrincessButtercup,

Sorry hear that you're having pain. I had a lot of back/neck pain during my treatments and took long acting pain medication and got through it, it wasn't fun irritating my back/neck daily. I hope you find some pain medication that works. Did you switch to face down treatments? I was face down and there were only a few markings from my underarm and down my side. The stickers covering the ink can really be annoying. The tegaderms covering the ink didn't bother me but drove me crazy because they kept coming off. The markings were minimal and easy to fix up but had to be done more than once a week. It's good your speaking up about your concerns. I hope it goes smoother for you soon.

Thanks, Veeder. I seem to be allergic to everything these days, so both ibuprofen and aleve are off the table. I'm still itchy (which I think is from chemo) so I'm loading myself up with benadryl and muscle relaxant (for the pinched nerve) to get through the radiation.

I do feel that there must be a better way to move radiation patients on a table than by an ordinary cotton bed sheet. It's crazy. My husband's car has a more exact adjustment system than this radiation table does.

14/19 done! The end is so close and yet so far! And I echo the ambivalence above--it will be strange to not be "doing" something about cancer after six months of active treatment. I'm excited, and I'm also nervous. My twin sister is awaiting biopsy results for a BIRADS 4C, so I'm feeling way more nervous about that at the moment, unfortunately. My family could use some good news, so send benign vibes our way!

And I'm pink, itchy, and tired. Sounds normal to me!

    Hang in there, everybody.

Okkate - hoping for good news for all. You are close, and doing nothing about cancer will be an welcome adjustment.

For all of us it will be a challenge to put "cancer" away, deep in the recesses of our minds, so we can live our lives without fear. Not sure it is 100% possible but I am sure going to try. I hope I can avoid borrowing trouble by worrying about something that may never happen and now that I have done it once I know that if something were to come I will just deal with it - just like the first time.

My last two boosts are today and Monday and then I am heading to England for a long-planned two week vacation - that will probably do more to help me turn the corner than anything else. I imagine myself coming back from vacation and just picking up my life where it was last November when this all started as though nothing happened. Fingers cross!

Have a restful and treatment free weekend everyone!

Last whole breast radiation today! Woot! I got to remove a bunch of stickers! I have four boosts next week, and then I'm done. Radiation has flown by and been much easier than I expected it to be.

Unfortunately today we also heard that my sister has breast cancer too. They caught it early, partly because they looked so hard given my diagnosis (we're twins), so I'm hopeful her road will be no harder than mine has been. Cancer is a rollercoaster. I hate it. But I'm going to enjoy the weekend break from rads and hope for the best. Have a good rads-free weekend, everybody!

okkate, sorry to hear the news of your sister.  Early is good though.  Totally treatable.  Those were the first words out of my BS mouth when I was diagnosed.  My younger sister also had BC in late 2014.  She is doing well, and if it wasn't for her I may have waited even longer to sign up for a primary doctor and get a check up.  I was never one for medical assistance unless I was unconscious or absolutely had to go after I couldn't fix whatever was wrong myself.  I guess no more of that after 55 yrs!  Random thought I just had: Sister is a leftie and BC was on right side.  I'm a righty and BC was on left.

#18/30 done this morning.  I'm doing well, upper chest only itchy and broken out area that I have.  Cortisone is working for that.  The node scar under my arm has turned a dark color but is not bothersome at all.  The under breast and breast itself not perfect looking but nothing of significance going on and I hope I can get thru the end with just the upper chest area-worried a little about boosts as my tumor bed is at 11:00 so I will anticipate that area may get worse before it gets better.

    Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Okkate, so sorry about your sister. Glad they caught it now though and she will gain a lot from your experience.

I had treatment #2 this morning. Already a bit pink and some itching. Seems too early but maybe it will settle down with the weekend off. The Aveeno is soothing.

The techs also gave me advice on saline compresses if it is bothersome. Boil one liter of water and add 1.5-2 teaspoons salt. Cool to room temperature. Wash hands, place clean facecloth or gauze in clean bowl. Pour room temperature saline solution over cloth/gauze. Lay wet cloth on area for 10-15 minutes. Discard gauze. Gently dry skin. Can be repeated. Replace solution daily.

Be good to yourself this weekend!
