Breastfeeding with Painless Lump

When I found out I was pregnant, I noticed a swollen lymph node in my right arm pit. I was referred for a breast ultrasound then a breast exam at a breast health center. The ultrasound just showed a lymph node and the doctor didn’t seemed concerned but did find another lump In my left breast. They monitored it for a few visits but ultimately released me from their care until “after you’re done breastfeeding”. A couple of months after I had my son, I noticed a lump right breast. It’s pretty big and isn’t painful at all. It’s long and oval between my nipple and my arm pit. I just figured that it was clogged milk because it occasionally disappears but then returns. I was finally (7 months postpartum) able to come in for a breast exam and I now have an ultrasound scheduled. I think what is bothering me the most is that I cannot find similar cases online. Everywhere I read about breast-lumps during breastfeeding says that they should be painful but it's not. A lady at my church was just diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer and I feel so petty worrying when I know nothing. Oh and I also just found out that my maternal grandfather died of kidney cancer (I always thought he had lung cancer) which is apparently hereditary. My ultrasound is in 7 days then my follow up with the doctor is a week later. I just hate that on TV the patients get all their tests right away and have a diagnosis in 44 minutes and I have to wait 3 weeks. I already have pretty bad anxiety so I'll have ulcers by then.

Well, of course you're worried. You're doing the right thing to have this checked. The fact that the lump comes and goes is very much in your favor--breast cancer doesn't act that way. It is much more likely that this is in some way connected to pregnancy and breastfeeding.

But I do have a question about your grandfathers kidney cancer. Why do they think its hereditary? Does he have a gene mutation that caused it?

    Thanks for the encouragement!

I guess I don’t really know for sure about his kidney cancer being hereditary. That’s a great point. I just felt less worried about it being lung cancer since he was a smoker for 50 years. Apparently it metastasized to his lungs after he had a kidney removed.

*nods* My mother died of kidney cancer last year. She was Stage IV when they found it in her liver. Mother was never tested, but my genetics counselor believes I probably got at least one of my gene mutations from her. Cancer runs rampant through my family tree.

Wow that’s awful. I wonder if he was ever tested for that gene markers. I also just found out he had dementia. I wouldn’t even know where to look. Are those genes that I can be tested for

I was tested after I was already diagnosed with BC. My sister helped me make a medical family tree. What we learned was astonishing--over 20 cases of cancer just in my 1st & 2nd generation relatives. Heck, there have been 7 cases of cancer just in my own family alone! It was a shock to learn that I had these gene mutations, but the up side is that I now have very good surveillance.

You could ask your GP. I was advised to get genetic testing by my breast surgeon.

Okay! Thank you for all your help! I had my breast ultrasound today and the ultrasound technician said that it looks like breast tissue. She said that he radiologist confirmed that. I follow up with the doctor next week.
