Breast lump
hi everyone i am a 18 year old female and i have had a breast lump for about 2-3 years and i went to the doctor and it got brushed off and said it was probably nothing because of my age. i know breast cancer is very rare in young ages but as the years have gone on the lump has gotten significantly bigger and a big blue vein has appeared on my breast and goes straight through my nipple. the lump is not painful when i touch it but i keep getting shooting pains in my breast and nipple and also in my armpit i have a rash on my breast and i have noticed changes in the shape of my nipple. i am tired all of the time and i just feel like i have no energy. i also keep getting red patches that come and go and i have spider veins on my breast. im not jumping to any conclusions because like i said i know any kind of breast cancer is rare in younger women. does anyone know if this sounds like it though??? i have an appointment with my gp next week
thanks to anyone who replies, elle.

ElleLouise - yes your age does make the odds very low, so you can take comfort in the numbers. No one here can diagnose so I think you definitely should go back and get this checked out, changes should be checked out as soon as they are noticed. Ask your doctor to listen and not brush off the symptoms...tell him/her that you’ve noticed changes. I hope you get answers, and breath easy, there are so many different things it could be. Let us know how your appointment goes next week please!

I am sorry that you're having this issue. It would be extremely rare for you to have breast cancer at 18. However, your concerns and symptoms are valid. Don't let your GP dismiss you because of your age. I would demand a referral to the breast center for an ultrasound. I would find another doctor if they won't give you a referral for an ultrasound.
-
thank you for such a fast response egads! i will let you know how my appointment goes next week!
also, thank you also for such a fast response kmartin, if my GP doesn't refer me i will have no choice but to go somewhere else! i cant keep worrying
-
Yes! You may have to be a bit pushy if they are reluctant. However, your health is very important. Also, you wouldn't have to worry about it anymore.
-
While your risk of this being cancer is virtually zero, there are other BENIGN conditions of the breast that are more common to young women. Since the lump has grown and there are other changes, you are wise to get it checked out. I think your fatigue is unrelated to your breast lump.
-
okay, thank you. i think i was just worrying even more as my great aunt got diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 24 too but i feel more at ease now. thanks everyone

I agree with kmartin-family history plus a lump plus pain plus time gone by should meet any insurance company's criterion so your dr should order ultrasound for you.
If I could have do-overs I would print out good breast/chest diagrams off the internet, and mark an X where you feel the lump is, draw lines for any pain pathway, and shade in any rash.
Take the picture with you and show it to the ultrasound tech before they begin.
Then make a point of commenting out loud when the tech finishes surveying each section of your breast so they know you are keeping track that all areas should be swept.
Any visible health issue these days should be captured in a photo and kept in your personal home health file imo.

Hi! Don’t delay. With the changes to your breast you describe you need a breast MRI, if imaging of other types show nothing. You have listed several changes to your breast that can be signs of breast cancer. This does not mean you have cancer, just don’t take “no” for an answer. Your age and other positives become less important if you have a lump that is changing and includes the nipple area.
My intention is not to frighten you, but motivate you to insist that whatever is going on with your breast be thoroughly investigated. Get mean, be uncooperative in taking no for an answer, for sure see another doctor this week

The lump has been present for 2-3 years? Did you have it evaluated 2-3 years ago or just recently?
If it has enlarged, has it done so slowly or all at once?
-
hi, thank you ive been putting off going for a long time but i have an appointment on friday with my gp. i also didnt mention in the first post as i didnt know if it was related but when i get the pain in my breast, i get pain in the same side on my upper back. also, it was 2-3 years ago when i had it evaluated. it has enlarged slowly, but then in the last month it has grown faster i almost forgot it was even there but then i started noticing other things and i started to get the pain and the vein. when i first got the lump it was completely painless, i had no vein and no rash. they have all developed within the last 4-5 months.
-
Reason enough to have things checked out.

"Get mean, be uncooperative in taking no for an answer, for sure see another doctor this week."
Sherri,
I love this! It's so true! Sometimes we have to fight like crazy to get someone to listen to us..but our health is always worth it!
-
hi everyone, i had the doctors appointment today and the doctor said the lump felt quite large and hard so she has reffered me to the breast clinic to have an ultrasound
-
Thanks for updating us. I'm glad that you got a referral for the ultrasound. You should have some answers very soon. I'm sorry that you have to worry about this. Let us know how it turns out.
-
i should be the one thanking all of you for trying to keep my mind at ease! she said i will have an appointment within the next 2 weeks so i will let you know what they say
-
Thanks! Try to relax as much as you can this week..I know it's much easier said than done. We are here for you!
-
thanks so much! it really does mean a lot!

hello. i just wanted to let everyone know that i have found a second lump in my breast, it doesnt really feel like a lump, well it does but it feels completely different to my first one. this lump feels like it is kind of under breast tissue, it is completely hard and painless and its not really big but since i noticed it i check it every few days and to me, it feels like its growing a little each time i check. i just wanted to let you know since you guys wanted updates so yeah
-
ElleLouise - have you got your US appointment booked yet?
-
hi egads, how r u?? yes my appointment is in 2 weeks
-
I’m good hun, thanks for asking! I can imagine how you are feeling, but are you hanging tough with all this? Be sure to let the tech know what you have found so that they can image everything. You could call to see if there is a cancellation list to get on if you’re good to go last minute, might shorten the wait.
-
im trying to hang tough, im a very big overthinker. im staying optimistic because i know its probably nothing to worry about but i just have that thought in the back of my head thats like what if it is something to worry about. you know? i called 2 days ago and im currently on the urgent list to have a consultation at the closest breast clinic. im glad youre doing well!
-
Keep hanging tough and keep as busy as you can. You’re right in thinking it’s probably nothing...most cases are. Keep pushing back at the negative, it’s so not worth your time!
-
thank you, egads! i will let you know how the consultation goes!
