Brands of Tamoxifen w/ least SE

Hi Everyone. I have 7 more rads to go out of 16 - hooray! - and will be starting tamoxifen after that. I've noticed some older discussions on the boards about different brands of tamoxifen and ladies having different results based on the type of tamoxifen they're taking.

If you can weigh in, what I'd like to know is if you are taking tamoxifen and NOT having really bad SE's to please post what brand you're taking. I'd really like to have some ideas so I can prepare for my med onc apt on July 10 where we'll be starting this next phase of treatment. I'd like to have as much info as possible so I can discuss with him the differences in the brands and hopefully make the best decision possible for as good an outcome as possible.

Thanks so much for any input you can give!!

Teva. Lots of us are doing the best with either Tamox or AI with the Teva brand. It's not the only one but that's the one I've always used. Maybe go to the bottle of Tamox thread. It's been discussed there before. I'm sure folks won't mind posting what they use.

It seems to vary from person to person. I have done okay on Teva, Watson, and almost-okay on Mayne. Mylan causes a lot of side effects for me. Unfortunately, these manufacturers have been shaking up their ownership and production for awhile now, so it's hard to know which actual formulation you're getting. I buy a 3-month supply so I won't be switching manufacturers or formulations every month.

Thanks Artista! I will check over there also. I had read about good results w/ Teva but then read there were problems getting it. However, those were old posts - several years back - so I that's one of the reasons I asked so I could get current info from you guys and also see if there are still issues getting some of the meds like Teva. I appreciate your feedback so much!

I'm not sure if it's nationwide and all but my Walgreens always gives me Teva Tamox so perhaps contact Walgreens near you and see. Mayne was good to me. That was the first one I got and didn't feel badly. I sometimes get warm flushes and the fibroids in my uterus can start bugging me but I don't take anything for either really. It's been manageable thankfully because I can't do AIs so this is it for me.

I have been given both Mayne and Teva by Walgreens... recently it's been Teva. Yeah, I get hot flashes mid cycle but no other SE. The hot flashes are not enough to send me scrambling to find something else. It's really ok, the tamoxifen. I have taken meds with way worse side effects so I am glad tamoxifen is pretty low key.

Thank you ALL so very much for weighing in for me! This really gives me great info to work with and I will definitely take your suggestions of contacting Walgreens. I think I'll just run by there tomorrow and chat w/ the pharmacist about their brands and what to expect them to carry. Also a great idea ksusan on buying 3 mo. supply at the time. I'll remind my MO to structure the RX that way so my insurance will cover. Thank you guys so much. I hope you're all doing well and happy 4th of July!!!

I just wanted to say that it might be worth trying one and if it is working stick with it. My pharmacy switched from MyLan to TEVA and it was a horrible difference. I became so severely depressed and had extwme side effects. Luckily I had an old bottle of Mylan and switched back. I was fine in 3 to 4 days.

I have reactions to drugs that are different than many others so don't get discouraged.there are different brands you can try

    Teva

Not many SEs for me -- or none that impact greatly. I also took Mylan the first month (I think it was) without much either but I asked the pharmacy to be consistent with Teva so I did not have this switching every month. Different inactive ingredients, if that's what you call them.

    GOOD LUCK!

I have tried ARIMIDEX (anastrozole), AROMASIN® (exemestane) , and now I am on Tamoxifen, (teva brand). I lasted 9 months on Armidex, 5 months on Aromasin, and then after a 6 week break, started the Tamoxifen 16 days ago. I had such horrible arthitis on arimedex and aromasin. Tomoxifen-No really bad side effects, except that my face broke out in large welts that look like huge mosquito bites after two weeks on it. I have never had any problems with my face. Never had acne as a kid, very rarely did a get a pimple when I was in my teens. I am not sure if this is from the Tamoxifen. I tried benadryl cream and benadryl oral, and it didn't help. And even calendula, which always clears up anything, didn't work.

Does anyone else have skin problems?

I am pretty much ready to give up on AIs.

I also have Crohns disease, so not steriods while on Tamoxifen. I was hospitalized twice last summer for my crohns, I think it's because the AIs screw up your hormones, and anytime my hormones get tampered with, I get a flare up. The first thing they do when you have a bad flare up is put you on IV steriods.

I am willing to take the risk, even though it's quite high, to forgo the AIs and just see what happens. It's a quality of life thing right now. I'm 60, I want to enjoy life, and ride my horse as much as I can, because he and I are both getting older.

I have been on mylan brand Tamoxifen with manageable SEs (night sweats, hot flashes) since December. I have not tried another brand. My MO wants me to take it 10 years...I plan to see how it goes. Good luck

Thanks everyone for all of your feedback. It has helped me tremendously, particularly to just feel better about taking it! I saw my MO and got my RX. I've filled it but haven't started yet. Walgreens gave me Teva so we'll see how it goes. MO told me to wait to start taking it for 2 weeks post radiation in order for rads to finish what it's doing. So I guess I'm starting this coming Friday. Fingers crossed it turns out to be not a big deal!!

Just a note. I was on Mylan brand for 6 months. My pharmacy switched to Teva. I developed numerous problems. A rash, depression, extreme emotion. Fatigue , muscle aches. It was wretched. After 3 weeks I realized that it was a different brand and switched to Mylan. All the symptoms started to clear up. I still have tremendous hot flashes but now I stay on Mylan. Still not sure why that happened.

Each generic is formulated slightly differently, and we respond differently. For me, Mylan is the worst. It's good to try switching if something's not working, and always ask the pharmacist for the generic that works best for you.

I have been fine on Teva. I get hot flashes for a couple weeks around ovulation).

Has anyone experienced sun sensitivity on the Tamoxifen? I read it's a possibility, but I was out in the hot sun for about 10 minutes the other day when it was super hot, and broke out in little itchy bumps (on my at-risk arm--great!)...but the bumps were gone by the next day. I was careful to not scratch them. When my mom was on tamoxifen she used to break out like that too, I was just surprised that it happened so fast.

I've taken Watson brand for 7 yrs except for about six weeks when the pharmacy gave me Teva brand. Joint pain stared after a few weeks and became worse with time. After reading posts here and other articles, I discussed problem with my dr and was given prescription for ony Watson brand.

Six weeks ago I received Mylan brand and now I'm experiencing joint problems again. Now I've searched Watson, and am brought to advantis pharmaceutical. Do you or anyone know if they make the same pill that was previously watson?

I'm thinking about stopping tamoxifen even though my dr and I decided on ten years.

Thanks for any input regarding side effects and stopping.

Glad you started this thread. I started on Letrozole, thought I was being poisoned, now on Tamoxifen I feel almost crippled. I want to go out but can barely make it through my local grocery store.... Dizzy, severe muscle & bone pain. It's so debilitating. I'm going to see who the manufacturer is for the Tamoxifen and see if my pharmacy can get another manufacturer to try. I would never have thought to ask.

    AnnN:

I just searched on Costco's site. The brand they sell is Watson. Just keep clicking once you search and you'll see the manufacturer, WAT. Good luck!

My bottle says, "Tamoxifen Citrate" Activis? Anybody heard of this one? I haven't started taking it yet.

For what it's worth, I get mine at Costco and the brand they carry can vary. I talked to the pharmacist about this and they confirmed that they change based on current pricing but that if I wanted a certain manufacturer I could certainly request it, although they said my cost may be higher.

My doctor gave me a script for brand name Tamoxifen. The pharmacist said it doesn't exist, it is only in generic. I wonder if the different manufacturers ingredients can cause differing side effects. Anybody experience this? My pills are imprinted with WPI otherwise it doesn't indicate on the bottle who the manufacturer is.

Your WPI pills are manufactured by Watson Pharmaceutical. There are 10 mg and 20 mg. See below --this site might be useful to others in identifying manufacturer of their generic tamoxifen. Everything has been a generic since 2006 (the original is no longer manufactured) and there are around 20 names and manufacturers. Either the original was tolerated very well or the SE reporting was not as thorough as it is now. The SE of the generics vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, possibly because of the different additives. Generics are allowed by law to vary up to 30% (either way) in potency from the original drug, so that is another factor.

Check drugs.com for tamoxifen+citrate and you will be able to identify your pill by appearance. I attempted to post a link, but this site does not allow it.

Just got put on Tamoxifen and my pharmacy gave me Zydus brand. Does anyone have input on the side effects with this brand?

Thank you gettingbetter for the information. It's strange that the NP didn't even know that name brand Tamoxifen was no longer available. The pills I most recently picked up say they are manufactured by Mayne, look different with different imprint of numbers, but so far the same side effects. If the potency of Tamox. Citrate (the active drug) can vary that much, we can't even be sure we are getting the dose it indicates on the bottle?

Is anyone taking this where the pills are scored down the middle for breaking in half?

Davenport 1, I haven't heard of Zydus brand until you posted.

The different brands don't necessarily have side effects--the side effects seem to have to do with individuals' sensitivities. My sister and I have opposite side effect profiles for two brands. Neither of us can tolerate the other's preferred brand.

Hi, I just started taking Tamoxifen about 10 days ago and have been experiencing a metallic and loss of taste in my mouth which makes it hard to eat. I called the pharmaceutical company and my pharmacist and confusingly they said the pill I'm taking is Actavis which is now part of Teva, but it also is imprinted with “WPI" so manufactured by Watson(?) Pharmacy just gave me Mylan to try so maybe that will be better. Has anyone had this side effect?

I just started tamoxifen citrate by activis today. Has anyone else used this one? I have tried anastrozole, Arimedex SE werejust too difficult for someone who has arthritic issues and fibromyalgia. I am trying to be optimistic but I’m concerned about the different generic makers. Would be very grateful to get some information and or advice. I was diagnosed with BC in December surgery in January and finished radiation May 1.

Veeder, my Tamoxifen from Mayne were scored--will be taking the last of my first 90 day supply Sunday evening. The 90 day refill is from Mylan so I'm a bit on edge about SE s being different. So far they have been relatively mild.

@Davenport1 curious how you are a month later? My pharmacy just switched my Tamoxifen from Mayneto Zydus and I'm concerned about SE's as well...
