Hi,

Just thought I would share what it going on, I'm sure it may be nothing serious but it's hard to know when I haven't had any testing.

I noticed a pain in my left breast a 2-3 months ago and didn't even think of it.. (I have next to know breasts so change is obvious, and never had pain other than blocked ducts when previously breastfeeding) (I haven't breastfed in over a year) Then one day when taking off my bra my breast felt quite hot and swollen, I looked in the mirror and could see a very obvious circular swelling on my breast (behind nipple and around 3-6 o clock). I was a bit worried and booked into the doctorst straight away. (this is a few weeks after I initially felt pain).

I was referred to get an Ultrasound which showed no lump, just increased blood flow which could mean infection(mastitis??? Even though not breastfeeding), so I was given 5 days of antibiotics. The second day of antibiotics I felt very unwell and had a temp. Was fine after that and breast pain (feels like a bruise) went away. The day after I had finished the course the pain was back instantly.

Back to the doctors again and this time she gave me a 10 day course of antibiotics, pain subsided after 4 days in, and the day after I finished the course pain is back!

On next visit she said she will refer me to a breast specialist... I'm just blown as to what's going on. Just want to share. Thanks.

Hmmmm..so the GP did the breast ultrasound? It sounds like you are going in the right direction. I'm really sorry you're having these issues. Hopefully, the breast specialists will be able to shed more light on the situation. I have to wonder why you weren't automatically referred to them in the beginning for a breast issue?Let us know how it goes. Keeping you in my thoughts :)

    thanks for your reply kmartin3243

I was referred to get an ultrasound :) and being young (23) I believe this is the normal referral system on steps to seeing an actual breast specialist.

Yes..you're definitely going in the right direction. The breast center should be able to give you some answers after they perform the ultrasound. I hope that it goes well and you can put this behind you behind you very soon.

Hi 1994. I went through a similar thing last May. I had nonlactational mastitis which cleared up right away with antibiotics but I ended up with an abscess a few months later which I have been dealing with for months now. From what I have read and understand nonlactational mastitis is very hard to get rid of but the fact that the antibiotics are making a difference it great news.

I hope your infection clears up soon 😊

kmartin3243 I have already have an ultrasound (as written in my post) which only showed increased blood flow which made them decide it could probably be 'early' signs of a breast infection.

When I first developed the abscess a few months later i was on antibiotics for weeks that didn't do anything. Abscesses don't respond well to them.

Do they have any answer for how you got the infection? Mine was attributed to old nipple ring holes but smoking and diabetes can also cause it.

    Just updating:

Rang to chase up bloods. The gp said my bloods were unremarkable and there is NO sign of infection and need to sort out further breast imaging....

I'm on day 4 of 12 days of antibiotics.. Should I stop...?

1994 You should speak to your doctor about the medication. He may have a reason for wanting to keep you on them.

I stopped taking them... And my pain has settles down and so has the swelling hallelujah!

If it flares up again I'll be going to back for further imaging :D

did you ever get your infection sorted out? I was just diagnosed with mastitis (post menopausal, haven’t breastfed in 6 years) I thought it was strange. I had a small rash and swollen breast with itchiness and soreness. Dr said if it wasn’t better in two weeks, she would send me for mammogram and ultrasound. I am on day 3 of antibiotics and a steroid cream with no change, except they mess up my stomach. Did you have a fever with your infection? I haven’t had a fever and my blood work didn’t show any infection.

    hey,

My swelling and pain came back last week after 3 weeks of it being painless. I have gone back to gp and been referred to a breast specialist for further investigation, with possible MRI.

my bloods showed no signs of infection or inflammation so no point giving me antibiotics again when they were not useful.

It could just be nothing but I need to know for piece of mind. My ultrasound showed next to nothing although the report says hypoechoic region (appears to be early mastitis (of which it's not)) and also that I had increased vascularity (increased blood flow) .

Just kind of a wait and see....
