1cm found..biopsy on Monday..freaking

44 years old. Had diagnostic ammogram and ultrasound yesterday. Radiologist was honest with me since I am a registered nurse and work for the hospital. He only does breasts so I feel confident in what he told me..

I have a 1cm mass to Right breast, he scanned lymph nodes and they were clear. He is 75% sure it is not benign but insisted that it's very small and I am going to be just fine, no chemo or anything like that. Very early and I will be fine.

I am trying to stay positive and he told me that even though it's so small we need to biopsy then MRI and breast surgery. I want it gone!

Feeling overwhelmed. No family history.

Should I believe him when he insists I'm gna be ok. He said I'm lucky I came in for the mammogram cuz I skipped two years.

    There are many early stage, very treatable BCs. Probability is that it’s something like that. Try not to worry until you have a dx. (FWIW—my DCIS two years ago was found when I was 18 months late for my mammo. I do not think it would have changed the dx; most likely it just would have been a smaller area.)

    Nurselola1973, hard to do but easy to say not to freak out. The pathology from the biopsy will produce the data you need to get a treatment plan in place if you need it. And an MRI will hopefully clarify things and determine if you need surgery.

    Your radiologist sounds like a pro and you were probably well served by that individual especially if you have dense breasts which are notorious for being difficult to image.

    Should you need treatment, you can find message boards here for people starting chemo and surgery which provide tips and support. There are boards devoted to various stages and diagnoses. I hope you won't need them but there are many communities here and they provide a life line especially during the early days which can be fraught with anxiety. They will be here if you need them.     Maybe you will be just fine, odds are good for that if you have early stage and low grade disease. But you are an RN so you may have already googled and read that if there is a BC, size alone does not predict grade or prognosis. So even though the odds are with you, sorry to say that you know deep down you cannot believe him until you have the biopsy. If things are bad, consider calling your primary care team this weekend or going into urgent care for a short term sedative, as you will have a few more days of suspense waiting for results.

    I was three years late on my mammo due to severe chest wall pain with mammos and dense breasts requiring extra vigilance, pain to the point of getting dizzy and almost passing out so we had not gotten complete views the last round. Then I got my low grade BCA dx, and after initial freaking out like you worry about, especially because I did not need another major medical problem, the BS said she thought my lesion had been growing at a snail’s pace for years and it is unclear even if I had timely done my mammo it would have mattered on my px

    Nurselola1973....Hi I'm also a RN and IMO it does make this process a little more difficult. To start try to remember they have to prove you have BC before you do! Hang on to that 25 percent. However if it turns out that you do we are all here for you. Good luck and please keep us posted.

    Nurselola, you're gonna be okay. I'm 3 years post treatment and I am doing fine. Different than I was before diagnosis, but still good. Hopefully the biopsy will turn out benign, but if it doesn't, this will likely be a small bump in the road for you. Keeping my fingers crossed for b9 results
