Bleeding from nipple?! Core needle 6/11
I had a core needle MRI guided biopsy on June 11th. I had a large hematoma, due to the dr getting 10 samples for pathology from my enormous lump (some pieces looked "ok" and most looked "bad" and a couple from the solid part of my mass was "unusual"...I was told by my surgeon "prepare for the worst, but hope for the best, because I may be wrong". Was supposed to hear my results within 24-48 hours (last Friday at the latest) as I was placed on the top of the list for the pathologist.
The night of my biopsy, my incision wouldn't stop bleeding. I finally went to the ER to get some help and they cauterized it. That burned sooooo bad! But at least the bleeding stopped. I have a large hematoma under my incision from the surgeon taking so many biopsies in one area, but blessed that he's so thorough!
I called for my results yesterday (Monday) but nothing there yet, and told the surgeon will call ASAP when he receives the results.
Something extremely strange has been happening!! I'm somewhat alarmed. I saw flakes of dried blood on my nipple several times, took it off, and then decided to gently squeeze my left suspicious breast and a lot of dark blood came leaking out?!?!?!
What is this from?! Could it be from the hematoma? Or is this related to something more? I've never had blood. Have had yellowish fluid (like colostrum) years ago...but it stopped. My twins were 8 months when I stopped breast feeding them and they are 7 1/2 now. I stopped the fluid leaking when my first lump was removed in 2011. Haven't had anything like this again.
I'm still sore from the biopsy- a little bruised, and it's manageable though.
I'm 34 years old and my risk for cancer is extremely high, I'm undergoing a double mastectomy with reconstruction (nipple and skin sparing) consult is June 25. If my pathology comes back malignant, plans may be changed a bit.
My two questions are:
1.) Have any of your core needle biopsy results been later than expected? If so, what were your results? What was the delay? I've read delays can be because the pathologist needs a 2nd opinion, or they are doing further tests to prove the cancer diagnosis. I'm prepared for either diagnosis- just can't keep waiting, I have feelings of pure dread lately. Much unlike my positive energy, I've been down and fearful.
Second question is:
2.) have you ever had blood from your nipple after a core needle biopsy, or at any point in your life? What can cause this other than cancer? If you do have cancer and had bleeding nipples (the side the tumor was on) what kind of cancer did/do you have?
My lump is huge! Takes up the entire outside of my size B left breast (whole outer edge from under armpit to the very bottom- chest wall to near nipple. Swollen lymph nodes under arm, and was told the MRI I had 3 weeks ago compared to my core needle MRI last week changed in size dramatically- has irregular borders now. Told it's NOT a fibroadenoma, cyst, or pappiloma.). So ready to be over this. Lol.
Best wishes to all waiting for test results, and those undergoing surgeries.
Marie

I've never experienced anything like you describe with the nipple bleeding. Dark blood is (I think) old blood. Meaning it's not fresh from a vessel. So it seems as if your bleeding COULD possibly be related to your hematoma, with "leftover" blood taking the path of least resistance?? But I reallly don't know. Maybe give your awesome new surgeon a call and ask him?
Sucks about the delay in getting your results, especially when you were given a date to expect them. I don't think they realize how difficult the waiting period is.....
Try to stay positive Marie. Thinking of you (((Hugs)))

HI! Marie June--
I know this topic is super old but I am having a similar issue and just wondered what answers you got. As it is the weekend I won't be able to reach out to anyone until Monday! I had my biopsy 1 week ago and still having bloody drainage from my nipple. I am guessing this is just from the hematoma but I was also a little concerned today because the amount increased. Anyways...I would appreciate any updates/advice.
Thank you
