J P drains

I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in July of 2016.

Since my insurance covered reconstruction my decision went from getting a lumpectomy to a double mastectomy with reconstruction.

I had my surgery in Sept of 2016 & had expanders put in place. I had 25 treatments of radiation (right side) after my expanding was complete. Last radiation treatment was Feb 3. In mid March I began having what felt like painful spasms in right breast. The plastic surgeon's assistant tried to draw out some of the saline to reduce pressure. I was losing my appetite & tired. One night at work my right breast felt wet. The next morning I saw radiation oncologist who then told me I needed to see Plastic Surgeon asap.

Plastic surgeon said I had, what appeared to be, an infection & the right expander needed to come out immediately. I had surgery the next day, & had both expanders removed. The surgeon left me packed for 2 days to fight the infection which was only on my right side. He said it was a form of merca & the worst infection he ever saw. When he stitched me up my breasts he left them a visual mess. Horrible to even look at.

Six months later, with my oncologist's encouragement, I decided to get my chest 'cleaned up'. I saw a differed plastic surgeon & told him I did not want reconstruction, just 'cleaned up'. I had my surgery March 8th of this year. He put 2 JP drains in me. Three days after surgery the left drain was leaking so bad I had to call the doctor. In his office the removed the left drain. They drew 240cc's from that side. I've had no problems with that side since. However my right side still has the JP drain, 4 1/2 weeks post op. My drain is only at 50. He won't remove drain until under 30. I've gained weight I'm miserable. Now work is ready to kick me off their insurance & offer me COBRA. I'm so depressed. The support group I've gone to has women in their 60's & 70's & are married with spousal support. I am self sufficient & scared. I just want this drain removed. I called the Doctor & told him that my count isn't anywhere near 30 cc. Can't we do something? I'm going in to see him in 5 days. I just want my life back. Seeking support from someone who truly understands is hard. For today, I pray. This has been my journey, I didn't even need a double mastectomy, it was my decision. Unbelievable what I've been through.

I’m so sorry for all you’ve been through! That seems weird that your DR doesn’t have a solution to remove the drain after 4.5 weeks. Why is it still draining so much? I don’t have any helpful advice or info but am truly sorry you’re not having such a hard time!!! Hang in there! HUGS!!

I am so sorry for what you are going through. I am in a similar situation, being single and self supporting. I know the additional stress that can bring. I wish I had an answer for you.

I believe it is illegal for your employer to dump you though while you are actively being treated for health issues.

    Hang in there. ((Hugs))

This too shall pass. You will recover and get your life back!

I'm so sorry you have to deal with all this. Did you end up getting the drain out by now? I had my 2 drains for 3 weeks and I know how depressing those stupid things can be. A person just doesn't feel normal. I've seen in my work that unfortunately some people are just prone to get infections. If you've had MRSA it's in your body and may just always randomly show up especially with something like this. Do they have you on some antibiotics? I pray things clear up for you.

    That is so scary msphil!

To update everyone; I saw my plastic surgeon yesterday. He removed my right drain after "5" weeks! yay! But when they looked at my left side, they sent me down to get a sonogram. They ended up draining 100cc 's from left side. The doctor initially mentioned putting a drain on left side, I was ready to cry. Instead they drained it & put ace wrap on it. They also gave me an antibiotic as a precaution in case an infection was started. I'm so glad this part is over. 2016-diagnosed & I'm finally done with plastics. Thank you for all the comments, to top things off I must mention.., when I spoke to a lawyer about getting inoculated with a form of merca in 2017, the lawyer told me I didn't have a case because it couldn't be proven where I got it, hospital or plastic surgeon. He then continued to tell me if I was married my husband might have a case since I no longer had breasts!!! Yes, a lawyer said that to me. Today was a good day closure with plastics & able to return to work next week. Bless all of ya!
