Concerning trees and leaves. . . there's a real power here. It is amazing that trees can turn gravel and bitter salts into these soft-lipped lobes, as if I were to bite down on a granite slab and start to swell, bud and flower. Every year a given tree creates absolutely from scratch ninety-nine percent of its living parts. Water lifting up tree trunks can climb one hundred and fifty feet an hour; in full summer a tree can, and does, heave a ton of water every day. A big elm in a single season might make as many as six million leaves, wholly intricate, without budging an inch; I couldn't make one. A tree stands there, accumulating deadwood, mute and rigid as an obelisk, but secretly it seethes, it splits, sucks and stretches; it heaves up tons and hurls them out in a green, fringed fling. No person taps this free power; the dynamo in the tulip tree pumps out even more tulip tree, and it runs on rain and air. -Annie Dillard

Love one another.
- Jesus of Nazareth (John 13:34) -
When we have our own "why" of life, we can bear almost any "how." -Friedrich Nietzsche

Happiness is not a brilliant climax to years of grim struggle and anxiety.
It is a long succession of little decisions
simply to be happy in the moment.

Winter refuses to go away. Cold rain all day, slop overnight into tomorrow, flurries & snow showers on & off all through the weekend. Fri. we won't even get up to freezing. At least it won't stick. (But 36 years ago this week we got 8" and the temp plunged to 18F). Kinda hard to rake all the winter's detritus from the lawn when it's cold and sopping wet and heavy...

"If you are willing to look at another person's behavior toward you as a reflection of the state of their relationship with themselves rather than a statement about your value as a person, then you will, over a period of time, cease to react at all."
-- Yogi Bhajan -
Deep inside, our integrity sings to us whether we are listening or not.
It is a note that only we can hear. Eventually, when life makes us ready
to listen, it will help us to find our way home.
Rachel Naomi Remen -
Mistakes are the portals of discovery.
- James Joyce -
If humans are to survive, we will have learned to take a delight in the essential differences between people and between cultures. We will learn that differences in ideas and attitudes are a delight, part of life's exciting variety, not something to fear. -Gene Roddenberry
-
People who take the risk make a tremendous discovery: The more things you care about, and the more intensely you care, the more alive you are. This capacity for caring can illuminate any relationship: marriage, family, friendships--even the ties of affection that often join humans and animals. Each of us is born with some of it, but whether we let it expand or diminish is largely up to us. To care, you have to surrender the armor of indifference. You have to be willing to act, to make the first move.
Arthur Gordon -
He who can give thanks for little
will always find he has enough.

The kind of work we do does not make us holy but we may make it holy. However "sacred" a calling may be, as it is a calling, it has no power to sanctify; but rather as we are and have the divine being within, we bless each task we do, be it eating, or sleeping, or watching, or any other. Whatever they do, who have not much of God's nature, they work in vain. -Meister Eckhart

I've been visiting this board for the past 18 months and have appreciated the advice and wisdom you've all been willing to share. Many of you helped me unknowingly, especially during the early days of my diagnosis. Thank you!! I'm looking forward to getting to know some of the 'Illinois ladies.'
I was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer in 2016. As I was doing my research, I was surprised to learn that up to 30 percent of early stage breast cancers (stages 0 – 3) will eventually progress to metastatic disease, but less than 5% of all funds raised in the name of breast cancer actually go towards researching this terminal stage of disease, stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. After finishing treatment I felt the need to do 'something.' I decided to get involved with Metavivor, a charity that donates 100% of all funds raised to research for stage 4 breast cancer.
I have met many amazing people through my experience, including Lianne Kraemer, a young woman currently battling stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. Lianne is organizing a Metsquerade, a formal fundraiser benefitting Metavivor. The inaugural Chicago Metsquerade, a sit down dinner for 300, with silent and live auctions, dinner and dancing, will be held in Chicago May 11, 2018. Metsquerade benefitting Metavivor has been held in Arkansas with great success the past two years. In 2018, Metsquerades will be held in four cities across the country, including Chicago.
I am not able to post a link, but if you have questions or would like to learn more about the event, please private message me. We would love to have you join us!

Overcoming Obstacles Requires Thought as well as Stamina.
Choose your goal and keep your eye on it. Never give up.
Perhaps you will need to change your plan
and approach you goal from a different direction, but don't quit.
Keep thinking. Keep re-planning. Keep going.
- Jonathan Lockwood Huie -
One has to abandon altogether the search for security, and reach out to the risk of living with both arms. One has to embrace the world like a lover. One has to accept pain as a condition of existence. One has to court doubt and darkness as the cost of knowing. One needs a will stubborn in conflict, but apt always to total acceptance of every consequence of living and dying. -Morris L. West

A mind at peace, a mind centered and not focused on harming others,
is stronger than any physical force in the universe.
- Wayne Dyer -
Time is an equal opportunity employer. Each human being has exactly the same number of hours and minutes every day. Rich people can't buy more hours. Scientists can't invent new minutes. And you can't save time to spend it on another day. Even so, time is amazingly fair and forgiving. No matter how much time you've wasted in the past, you still have an entire tomorrow.Success depends upon using it wisely—by planning and setting priorities. -Denis Waitely

Living life in terms of your vision and working toward your goals must be done in the context of today's activities. Do not focus too heavily on the results of your efforts. Do not live for the future attainment of your goal. Live your life through the lens of your vision and what can be done in the present moment. Living your vision is not about reaching your goals. It is about living and working toward them. It is not about producing results but about living your life in a more meaningful and personally rewarding way. -Ari Kiev
You had better live your best and act your best and think your best today;
for today is the sure preparation for tomorrow and all the other tomorrows that follow. -Harriet Martineau -
"The greatest test of courage on earth is to bear defeat without losing heart."
– Robert G. Ingersoll -
Joyfulness keeps the heart and face young.
A good laugh makes us better friends with ourselves and everybody around us.
- Orison Swett Marden -
The answer to helplessness is not so very complicated. A person can do something for peace without having to jump into politics. Each person has inside a basic decency and goodness. If we listen to it and act on it, we are giving a great deal of what the world needs most. It is not complicated but it takes courage. It takes courage for a person to listen to his or her own goodness and act on it. Do we dare to be ourselves? This is the question that counts. -Pau Casals

In every adversity there lies
the seed of an equivalent advantage.
In every defeat is a lesson showing
you how to win the victory next time.
Robert Collier -
"Life becomes harder for us when we live for others, but it also becomes richer and happier."
– Albert Schweitzer -
According to the law of Dharma, you have a unique talent and a unique way of expressing it. There is something that you can do better than anyone else in the whole world--and for every unique talent and unique expression of that talent, there are also unique needs. When these needs are matched with the creative expression of your talent, that is the spark that creates affluence. Expressing your talents to fulfill needs creates unlimited wealth and abundance. -Deepak Chopra

"Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature -- the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter."
-- Rachel Carson -
I am in the present. I cannot know what tomorrow will bring forth. I can only know what the truth is for me today. That is what I'm called upon to serve. Igor Stravinsky

Nature has given to each conscious being every power she possesses, and one of these abilities is this:just as Nature converts and alters every obstacle and opposition, and fits them into their predestined place, making them a part of herself, so too the rational person is able to finesse every obstacle into an opportunity, and to use it for whatever purpose it may suit. -Marcus Aurelius
