Effexor? Who takes this
My MO had me taking this to offset the SE of tamoxifen. Specifically the hot flashes. Anyone else take this?

I have been on it in the past. Just be warned that it is a nasty withdrawal.
-
my MO gave me a scrip for this because I was pushed into menopause by chemo and started experiencing hot flashes. Well I started reading about it and didn't think it was for me so I never told ok it....I do however, leave the window open now ....

I take it. I started out on 37.5 mg 3 weeks ago. Yesterday we upped it to 75 mg. I've not had any problems with it. I do still find myself waking up frequently during the night, but not every hour like it was before and I'm able to fall asleep easier. I do still have the occasional hot flash, but not as bad as before. Meds affect people differently. I hope it works for you.

Many women do take an SSRI for hot flash management. It is also an antidepressant. It is not prescribed typically at a therapeutic dose for depression. The usual dose starts at 37.5mg and increases until hot flashes resolve or are considered manageable. There are other meds out there for hot flashes --> gabapentin is another used for hot flash control however the med purpose is nerve pain. You can't just stop an SSRI - because there can be some intense withdrawls....stuff to consider. However many women have been using this med for years and it is effective for most...

I was on it for four years. I really liked it. I was on 37.5 mg initially, upped it to 75. I weaned off by taking five extra beads out each week until I was taking a very low dose, then I switched to Prozac.
-
I also started at 37.5 and now up to 75. Did any of you ladies have any SE from it during the time you used it? I have noticed that my vision is a little blurry sometimes, and i can't stop yawning. Anyone else

ive been taking 75 mg of Effexor for the past 2 years to help manage hot flashes first from tamixofen, then from hot flashes on femara, and it really does help. ive missed taking if occasionally and will have more intense and more frequent hot flashes. I initially started at 37.5 mg, upped to 75 but then went back down to 37.5 because I was always so tired and all I wanted to do was sleep. turns out it was the tamixofen making me so tired. once I changed to femara Im not that tired, and actually went back up to 75 mg and not having any issues at all with tiredness.

I have been on this since 2009. before BC for hot flashes and depression. I can tell if I miss doses as my mood plummets. I dont know if I will ever be able to get off it. I am still depressed when on it.
-
I've just started taking 37.5 mg two weeks ago, but so far I've noticed just a tiny bit of improvement (not sure any). How long does it usually take to work if it's going to?
-
I too started at 37.5mg. Brought my hot flashes down from 6/day to 1-2. It can have a reduced efficacy after a while. I recently went to 75mg due to increased hot flashes and signs of depression (unrelated stuff). My doctor did tell me that coming off of it is challenging and when the time comes we will work together.
LiMa66 - regarding your waking up at night. Have you tried taking your tamoxifen/AI in the morning? Long story but I discovered that aromasin was the driver to my insomnia and switching to morning corrected the problem.

I’ve been taking 75 mg for almost 2 years. Helped tremendously with hot flashes and really reduced my anxiety. Felt like a zombie the first 2 weeks or so. If the time comes to get off of it, I have read that taking beads out slowly over a few months works wel
-
What does "taking beads out" mean? I'm on 37.5 mg. Effexor, and probably will continue until my 10 years on anti-hormals is over in 2 1/2 years.
-
If you open the capsule you find tiny white beads inside. When I was coming off it I’d take five extra out per week and toss those, then put the capsule back together.
Ckat - it take about three weeks to kick in.
If I missed a dose I would get slightly dizzy. I always kept spares in my purse- that was the one med I could not forget.
I had really vivid dreams on it, but that might have been the Tamoxifen. I kind of miss those.

Thanks farmerlucy! Is this what the docs recommend?

I have had some wild dreams since starting this drug. Never did in just the tamoxifen, so I'm guessing it is this drug.
Anyone have very dry mouth and a strange taste?
-
I have thought about going on this for anxiety, but am kind of wary about adding another medication. So trying to manage my anxiety unmedicated, which is super fun. I was on Zoloft a few years ago (for about a year) and gained weight from it (which I promptly and easily lost after coming off it). I've been lucky that Tamoxifen hasn't caused any weight gain yet, so I'm hesitant to throw another drug in if it's not 100% necessary. Of course there are moments I start to feel that it might be necessary. :P
-
gb, Effexor is actually known to cause weight loss. I've lost about 7 lbs after starting it.
-
pupmom - I learned the bead trick here!
-
I was on this for a few years and even though i was slowly weaned off, i had a month of flu symptoms. Never did get the weight loss.
And late on your dose? You feel ill. Worst AD and never again.
-
I've been on it for a couple months...on 75 mg. If I miss a day or two (sometimes I forget to take it!) - I get a little light-headed. Which - of course is scary after a BC dx.
But, when I go back on it - the light-headness - disappears.
I think it helps a little with the hot-flashes - but - helps more with my mood and social anxiety.
The first few times I took it - had bad insomnia. It's much better now.

Took Effexor pre-cancer, for depression. Terrible side effects began as soon as my dose went above 75 mg. They continued as I sloooooowly weened off it (opening the capsules and removing 5 grains a day). About a year after I quit altogether, I was still having the brain zaps that people describe. It was about two years after quitting that all the unwanted side effects finally stopped for me.
In case people are wondering, the side effects included: dry mouth, anxiety, constant hunger/nausea with weight gain, night sweats, inability to orgasm, dizziness, "spider-vision" (saw weird squiggles at the edge of my field of vision), and the zaps that feel like you are getting electric shocks in your head.
I later described this experience to my primary care physician who said, "I'm going to put you down as 'allergic to Effexor.' " So I'm guessing I'm at the extreme end of intolerance.
-
I've been on it about 6 months. Am wondering if they will increase my dose at the next appointment as my hot flashes are increasing again,. No real side effects even if I miss one dose, but I forgot to take it last year after the hurricane/extended power loss and I had crazy bad dreams. They stopped as soon as I remembered
Shelabela I noticed you're from Crespo-I used to live in Decorah! Both my boys were born there

I have been taking Effexor for nearly 9 years to offset SE from Arimidex. No real issues and helped a lot. I do have very wild and crazy dreams. My husband thinks I am a bit nuts because of it. I started with 37.5mg then up to 75mg. Was up to 150 at one point due to other stress in my life. Have been back to 75mg for a few years. Seems to be the right dose for me. I can't miss a dose or I feel bad overall. I am sure I will have to slowly withdraw as others have suggested. I once tried to reduce to 37.5mg, but went right back up after a couple days as my body didn't feel right.
Recently developed some mystery back and pelvic pains. My Oncologist is thinking it might be related to the Arimidex and asked me to stop cold turkey. I have been off for 9 days and have felt rotten. I have been having diarrhea, abdominal pain, achy, sleep issues, depression, you name it. I am hopeful that these will go away in time and then will consider tapering off Effexor.
